Hello all: I am looking for information on Joseph CANTERBERRY/CANTERBURY who married Ruth SIMMS. He was in the Rev. War and I lose track of him after the Battle of Brandywine. Since he was in the VA 6th Continental Line it is possible he was taken prisoner or killed. Have not been able to find info indicating either. I also find the following info: "Ruth Canterbury of Amherst, is last listed in Amherst in October 1778 receiving aid as wife of a poor soldier in the Continental Army". Can anyone provide any information on this couple? Will willingly share any info I have if interested. Each of these names have variant spellings. Anyone else working on these names? Thanks.

I'm sending this out one last time to see if there are any bites before I send the final results on who we've been able to identify in the Amherst Co. HARVEY marriages. After that we'll move on to another county. Debbie Harvey had sent a message that involved several of these marriages and some additional information has been found. Two others have responded who are looking in their files for more. I won't list all the Harvey Amherst marriages this time - only the ones listed in Debbie's message. "Can anyone provide any additional information on Richard Harvey and Mary Wood, daughter of Josiah Wood of England? Any information on Nicholas Harvey (Harvie) or James Harvie (married to a Miss Steptoe) of Botetourt County? The following information was extracted from a typed sheet (origin unknown). \ Richard Harvie married Mary Wood, daughter of Josiah Wood of England. (*** Wm b 1790 - He and Paulina found in 1850 Nelson Co census; William Harvey & P Bryant m 23 Apr1819, Nelson Co) Across the top of the sheet it mentions a Nicholas Harvie location no known. Attn: WOOD, SEAY, SAUNDERS, GOING, NEWMAN/NEUMAN, BRYANT, HARVIE/HARVEY or possible KIDD, PETERS and STEPTOE researchers Hi folks, In our recent set of Virginia HARVEY marriages (Amherst County), we are still missing documentation on the following marriages and your help is needed: 2. John NEUMAN & Betsy HARVIE, 26 May 1794. 5. Peter SAUNDERS & Dolly HARVEY, 11 Dec 1802. 6. Joseph HARVEY & Polly GOING, 18 Dec 1802. 7. James HARVEY & Rachel THOMPSON, 21 Nov 1803. Also, some additional information had come in on the following: 3. Thomas HARVIE & Betsey SEAY, 19 Oct 1795. "Abraham Seay surety". 4. Joseph SEAY & Nancy HARVIE, 27 Dec 1796. "James Harvie surety." Notice that these marriages are all around the same time period and probably have to do with Harvey's in the same generation. Debbie Harvey had come across a piece of paper without reference as to the source indicating that a RICHARD HARVIE and wife MARY, dau of JOSIAH WOOD of Albemarle Co., was the father of a JAMES HARVIE (#7) who married RACHEL THOMPSON (the one listed as surety for #4? - perhaps as her brother?) as well as THOMAS HARVIE who married BETSEY SEAY (#3); BETSEY HARVEY who married JOHN NEWMAN (#2); DOLLY HARVEY who married PETER SAUNDERS (#5); a JOSIAH HARVEY who married MARY GOING (poss. typo or misread of #6) and also a WILLIAM HARVEY who married a PAULINA BRYANT. Two other names, RICHARD and SALLIE HARVIE are also listed as children with no spouses mentioned. If you have any information on these people or anything that might prove or disprove the above, please respond either to me or to the list. Thank you. Sandra dewey_nolan@msn.com
Does anyone have information on John M. Franklin who married (1) Pamela Dawson and (2) Margaret (?). John was the son of Henry Franklin Sr. and Margaret (Hensley)? I have connected to several search engines and typed in baptisms and found a lot of sites. www.altavista.com and www.google.com are just 2 of the many search engines available. Hope this helps. Leslie (Burford) Cabral
Hi All - In the 1700's, the state of VA declared itself to be the official Episcopalian church and baptized many children regardless of their religious affiliation. It would seem to me that there should be records of these baptisms somewhere. Does anyone know where? Is there an exact URL? Please advise. Dear Jayne, This reply to your email is being sent to the Wright and Amherst lists as well for convenience. The Augustus Wright of your list is 1776 (year of death) Augustus Wright of Amherst County, Virginia (place of death). He married Alice or Alcey Ball and had the following children: 1. 1847 Robert Wright of Madison County, Alabama, 2. William Wright, 3. John Wright who married Susannah Bibb, 4. Susannah (Wright) Mays, 5. Mary (Wright) Pamplin, 6. 1838 Augustine or Austin Wright of Amherst County, Virginia, 7. Sally (Wright) Edmunds, and 8. Jane or Jenny (Wright) Edmunds. I have collected a substantial amount of information on this family, including a very interesting will contest. Augustine's will gave his land to his youngest son Augustine Jr., a minor, and the land could not be divided until the minor came of age. Alsey married Samuel Edmunds after Augustine's death. Samuel wanted to buy Augustine's land so he could raise the joint families on that land, rather than on his own land. Samuel had Augustine's will altered by the schoolmaster John Doleman, who had written the will for Augustine. The payment for altering the will was two cotton shirts. The purpose was to cause the will to fail to be admitted to probate so that Augustine would die intestate. Under the primogeniture rule, the land would then pass to Augustine's oldest son Robert and Samuel Edmunds could then buy the land from Robert. And that is exactly what happened. Achilles Wright and Parmenos Wright (see below) testified that the will presented in court by Alsey (Ball) (Wright) Edmunds had been altered and was not the will they had witnessed. The will was rejected and Alsey was appointed administrator of Augustine's intestate estate. The land went to the eldest son Robert Wright and he sold it to Samuel Edmunds. Forty two years later Augustine Jr. sued his older brother Robert, thinking Robert had altered the will to get the land. Alsey (Ball) (Wright0 Edmunds testified that she could not read or write and presented Augustine's will for probate without knowing it had been altered. John Edmunds, a son of Samuel Edmunds, testified that his father had told him the story of the altered will and said only Alsey, Samuel, and the schoolteacher knew what had happened. Jane (Edmunds) Mays testified that the schoolteacher told her that he had altered the will and that when she told her father Samuel Edmunds what Doleman had said, her father said he would kill her if she told anyone while he was alive. I have not found the disposition of this case, but since the only party still living who might be liable was Austin's mother Alsey, I suspect Austin dismissed the case. Lindsay Wright in your list was a son of Jesse Wright and Susannah (Harper) (Welch) Wright and married Elizabeth Wilcher on Aug 27, 1799, at Amherst County, Virginia. I lose track of this family in Amherst in 1804 and would much appreciate any information on where they went and their descendants. Achilles Wright in your list was 1825 Achilles Wright of Oldham County, Kentucky. He was born probably before 1748, married Nancy _____, and moved to Henry County, Kentucky in 1811. I think he was a brother of 1776 Augustus Wright of Amherst County, Virginia, and a brother of Parmenos Wright, based on their witnessing Augustine's will, but cannot yet prove that. 1825 Achilles and Nancy had the following children: 1. George Wright who married Elizabeth Landrum, 2. 1824 Samuel Wright of Kentucky, 3. Patsy (Wright) Lane, 4. Mildred (Wright) Gatewood, 5. Nancy Anne (Wright) Johnson, 6. Lucy (Wright) Mays, 7. Polly (Wright) Campbell, 8. Elizabeth (Wright) Martin, 9. 1831 Nelson Wright of Henry County, Kentucky, and 10. James Wright, who possibly married Lucy Crisp. The Bennett Wright in your list was probably 1876 Bennett Crawford Wright of Randolph County, Missouri. He was a son of 1807 Isaac Wright of Amherst County, Virginia, and Susannah (Ellis) Wright and grandson of 1767 Francis Wright of Amherst County, Virginia, and Mary (Hawkins) Wright. He was born in November 1785 at Virginia, married three times, and went to Kentucky in 1811 and Missouri by 1840. I would be happy to exchange information on these families. Best wishes, Robert N. This email is being sent to the Wright, Bedford, Franklin, Roanoke, and Amherst lists, so you may get duplicate copies. This is just to let everyone know that Heritage Books (heritagebooks.com), 150-E Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, Maryland 20716, has just published my most recent work Wright Family Death, Cemetery, And Probate Records, Bedford County, Virginia. The death records go through 1918, the cemetery records are taken from the Bedford City/County Museum listings, and the probate records go throught 1900. To the extent known, the Wright of the record is identified and his or her Wright ancestors are listed. This is the fourth volume in the series. Birth, Marriage, and Land Records are also available.
