COULD SOMEONE ON THE LIST TELL ME WHAT TOWN IN AMHERST CO., VIRGINIA, IS PEDLAR'S DISTRICT IN?
Can someone please tell me where this Pedlar District is , what town it would be in . Thanks Sarah skincaid@cwv.net
Dear Jill, This is in reply to your query regarding Sarah Wright and for convenience is being sent to the Wright, Nelson, and Amherst lists as well. My records do not list your Sarah, but do list 1923 (year of death) Christopher Columbus Wright of Texas (place of death) and his wife Sarah Jane(Gann) Wright and two of their children, Nathan Dawson Wright and Aaron Wright. 1923 Christopher was a son of 1861 Robert Dawson Wright of Trinity County, Texas, and Eleanor (Dickerson) Wright. 1861 Robert was a son of 1838 James Wright of Adams County, Mississippi, and Frances (Dawson) Wright. 1838 James was a son of 1816 Robert Wright of Nelson County, Virginia, and Margaret (_____) Wright. 1816 Robert was a son of William Wright (Amherst County, Virginia) and Esther (_____) Wright. I would be happy to exchange information with other interested researchers Robert N. Hi List, New to this list and I am looking for anyone researching the above family. I believe my 2nd great Grandfather James BOWMAN b.Aug 1825 in TN to be a nephew or grandson of John BOWMAN formerly of Amherst Co.,VA. John and Barsheba migrated to Roane County TN sometime around 1790. John died according to his will in 1841 and is buried in Roane Co.,TN. Barsheba passed away intestate Oct. 6, 1860. A file on the family of James Bowman is located here http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/d/u/f/Gary--G-Duff/ Would love to hear from anyone researching this family. Thanks, Brenda Duff
Hello. I'm new to this list and looking for fellow researchers that may tie into my Bowling, Mitchell, and Haydon ties in Amherst county, VA. I'm especially interested in learning more about the ancestors of Harriet Ann Mitchell. I have an unverified birthdate of April 13, 1806 for her and speculate that her father was John Mitchell. I do not know who her mother was or if she had any siblings. I have a copy of an Amherst county marriage bond dated March 18, 1829 for Jarvis Hayden and Harry Ann Mitchell. It is signed Jarvis Haydon and John Mitchell (her father?) I also have a copy of an Amherst county guardianship paper that is dated December 17, 1855 making Abner Haydon and Richard Haden (signed Haydon) guardians of the orphaned children of Jarvis Haydon: Elizabeth H, William J, Alexander, and Margaret Haydon. Jarvis and Harriet Haydon's son, Alexander Haydon (born June 9, 1840) married Margaret Eudora Bowling (born April 16, 1848 daughter of J. J. Bowling and Lucy Jane Mitchell). Lucy Mitchell was the daughter of Leroy Mitchell (born abt 1797)and Sallie Harvie (born April 16, 1805). I would love to correspond with others who are researching these families! Debbie Ullom
Which County and State that Websites are located?
Can someone on the list give me the address for Amherst Co Courthouse and maybe tell me the dates of the birth records and death records that they hold? God bless you, Flo
Hello Fellow-Researchers, I have a Amherst Co., VA HARTLESS female: "Leanna" born between 1844 and 46 who mysteriously becomes a BURCH. I have thus far been unable to find a marriage license for Leanna and her male Burch husband (?). The census info I have viewed does not designate "single" or "widowed". She just appears on the 1850 and 1860 as a young HARTLESS girl, and then on the 1870 as a BURCH with three young boys ages 1 yr old to 6 yrs. old. The two youngest boys have been identified as belonging to the man Leanna later marries - when their names appear on his 1883 will - but the name of the oldest boy does not. He was apparently a "Burch" and DID use the BURCH name as an adult. Have any of you Amherst County BURCH researchers got any info on a marriage between one of your male BURCH members to a HARTLESS girl? If so, I would greatly appreciate cooresponding with you. We'd like to find a father for Leanna's son, William, born about 1864! Pam pamjt@saa.net

Hey all, I rcvd this & thought I'd pass it along :) Jeannie Twas The Day Before Yesterday TWAS the day before yesterday and all through the branches, NOT a name to be found, none of my ancestors. THE Journals and Bibles were dusty and worn, WHY should we care, these kinfolk are gone. THE pictures of children and family, long ago dead, ARE scattered, crinkled, and crammed under beds. DAD in his chair, and I with a book, HAD just settled back to give the TV a look. WHEN out on the street there arose such a clatter, I sprang to my feet to see what was the matter. ON the way to the window I tripped with a crash, I tore open the curtains and looked through the glass. THE sun in the sky was nowhere in sight, THE clouds were so gray, it could have been night. WHEN what to my wondering eyes should appear, THE Mailman with packages, letters and cards of good cheer. THE driver was grumbling while sorting his letters, I knew in a moment, things had to get better. THE size of one letter stood out from them all, A distant cousin was asking about family, one and all. THE names of Grandpa and Grandma, Great Grandparents all, NEXT came my Father, my Brother, and Uncle Paul. FROM cousins and uncles to aunts and nephews, NIECES and in-laws, just to name a few. SO through the many journals and photos, and stuff I possessed, MY search for my ancestors slowly progressed. WHILE up the family tree I gradually climbed, MY ancestors names, I was seeking to find. UPON that tree I have carved many a name, THE branches of which, will never be the same. THE tree is now filled with many I've found, BUT in the search for others, now I am bound. THE ancestors whose names, I have written with love, THE Lord has gathered to take to His Father above. WITH so many names yet to be carved on that tree, I have little time to waste on games and TV. GATHERING names, photos, histories and places, REQUIRES a lot of love, patience, and God's good graces. SOME were Farmers, Soldiers and such, Mothers and Fathers who struggled much. SOME were Settlers, who traveled far, some Adventures, who followed the stars. SOME were rich but most were poor, they came by ship, seeking more. SOME died young, others old, many their stories yet untold. I cried when I thought of those brothers and sisters, FOR I am who I am, thanks to my ancestors. MY family is but one branch on the Tree of Life, A tree that grew strong through toil and strife. ALONE, I'm just a bare twig or a stub, TOGETHER we build a Family Tree of Love (Written by Linnie Vanderford Poyneer one night after a long day of research) ************* Jeannie Watts Now Available: "The Descendants of John Thomas Clay, Jamestown Immigrant and son of Sir John Clay of Wales" Also available: "The Descendants of James Bailey & Lucy Simms" For more info: http://www.trellis.net/users/madamx

According to the HEAD OF FAMILIES-VIRGINIA, 1783 - AMHERST COUNTY, there is a John BROWN with 10 whites and 2 blacks and a Adam BROWN with 4 whites and 1 black. Moses BROWN son of John BROWN m. Aug 3, 1780, Milley Milstead, daughter of Joseph Milstead & Rebecca. According to the 1999 Amherst Heritage Book, on June 21, 1781 two hundred and seventy nine non-commissioned officers and privates from Amherst County marched to join Major Gen. Lafayette. Among them were Andrew Brown, John Brown, Sr., John Brown, Jr., Morris Brown, and William Brown. Amherst was part of the Buckingham District which included Buckingham, Amherst, Albemarle and East Augusta Counties. It also included what is now Nelson County. Since Nelson was part of Amherst Co. at that time. Are these BROWN's all from one family of BROWN's? Is anyone searching John BROWN, Sr. from Amherst Co. who served in the Rev. War? In October of 1777, my ancestor, Nicholas PHELPS, was drafted and mustered under Captain Billy JOHNS. He rendezvoused at Buckingham Courthouse (Virginia) and marched under Major BELL to Williamsburg, Va. when Colonel Joseph CAVIL(sic) {CABELL} was Col. of the Militia and General MAY commanded. He was in no battle, the British never came in while he was at Williamsburg. Where we remained until disbanded the latter part of March 1778. He was Disbanded by General MAY. Does anyone have information about any of these men or their assignments? JOHNS, BELL, CABELL, MAY. I would like to know what county they came from. THanks. Mary
