Hi Listers, Thanks for all the help...hopefully, I can find some good stuff about my ancestors while in Amherst Co. Regards, Kelley
Hi Listers, According to census records, my WHITE ancestors lived in Pedlar's Mill in Amherst Co. I will be in VA next week and would like to visit this area...is it still called Pedlar's Mill? We will be in Springfield, VA visiting relatives then plan to tour VA and will probably head toward Lynchburg. Does anyone have directions to the Pedlar's Mill area from Lynchburg? Thanks, Kelley
Hi! My great-grandfather had a middle name of Wurts (Alexander Wurts Haydon). The same name was used for a middle name for one of his nephews (William Wurts Haydon). Is anyone aware of a Wurts family in the county in 1840 or earlier? Thanks! Debbie Ullom
Can anyone help with more info on the couple here? The info came from FTM CD #403 but I didn't get any further data on location, etc. I don't have the CD myself. Thanks. I would love to find parents or siblings for this John and perhaps connect him to another family I have in my database. Thanks again. 1 John Canterbury b: Bef. 1710 . +Sarah Gurney m: 1718
Thank you very much! This group of Carpenters is one that I'm interested in. Benjamin and Finley were sons of Richard Eden Carpenter, who was a son of Austin and Catherine (Scott) Carpenter, and Austin was son of Benjamin and Mary Carpenter who came from King & Queen Co. VA to Amherst Co. VA around the time of the Revolution, according to family legend. I'm not sure about the more recent folks, most of my information is on the early generations so far. If anyone knows how they tie into the Carpenter family that was up around Piney Mountain and Thrashers Creek, I would like to hear from you. Hello all, I am a new subscriber to the Amherst list, am researching the Carpenter families of early Amherst Co. VA, and will be glad to share data about them. I hope one of you can help with something I really really need for my research, but can't do from way down here in south Texas. Do any of you have access to the original deed books in the Amherst Courthouse? I need to see the original script writing in a 25 Feb 1782 deed in Deed Book E, p. 318. In this deed, Benjamin Carpenter and his wife sell land to James Luttrell. What I need to see is the spelling of Benjamin's wife's name in that deed. If someone could look up that page, copy it, and mail it to me, I would be glad to reimburse your costs, as well as very grateful. I am willing to pay a reasonable amount for someone to do this if it is out of the way. Thanks for any help you can give! With regards, Terry Carpenter San Antonio, Texas

Elizabeth had a son William Davis Hill born 1780-1781. He was married to Nancy Williams November 26, 1801 in Amherst Co., Va. Hello ! I'm searching for the graves of Jesse Haydon (died in Amherst Co, VA - July 1846) and his wife Lucy (McCaully) Haydon (born March 28, 1771 and died in April 1862 at the age of 91). Dates and location are from an old Family Bible. I'm not sure what part of Amherst County they were living in. I believe they MAY have lived somewhere near the Bedford county border and not too far from Lynchburg. I have been unable to find them on the census records. (Their son, Jarvis shows up on the 1850 Amherst county census in house #845 as Jarvis Haden... neither Jesse nor Lucy are with him). Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks! Debbie Ullom
Hello, Since I am currently researching Coffee, I have taken the liberty of adding from the information that I have. I only comment on persons born before 1850 because those records are the only ones that I have reviewed. 1) Are the children of John Coffee and Betsy? of the Eastern District of Amherst Co. 2) Are the children of Wm. Coffee and Sally ? of the Easter District of Amherst Co. These two appear to be brothers located on the 1850 Census Roll 933, Page 086. Other Coffee's are there as well poss. siblings. Also Jordan Coffee, age 72 and Betsy Coffee, age 72, may have been their parents. These were names on an 1850 Census schedule. There is a good chance that there are other children who had already left the nest. But in my notes I have the following family which may interest you: John Coffee 41 VA Farmer +Betsy 43 VA Charles 18 VA Laborer Mary 16 VA John J. 14 VA Sarah J. 12 VA Wm. H. 10 VA Daniel 3 VA Eastern District, Amherst Co., VA. Roll 933 Page 086. On the same page is a Jordan COFFEE and wife, Betsy, ages 70 and 72, respectively, who may be John COFFEE's parents. If you haven't looked at these records, check them out. There are other COFFEE's on the same page. Norm

Hi Everyone, I recently discovered that Jesse COFFEE and Ruth GADDY were my wife's g grandparents. Is anyone researching these surnames? Jesse COFFEE was born ca. 1791. Ruth GADDY was born ca. 1802 and they were married 22 Dec 1825. That is all that I know right now. I am guessing that Bartholomew GADDY and Elizabeth THORP were Ruth's parents because Martha GADDY gave her consent to Ruth's marriage but was too young to be her mother. Since Martha was Bartholomew's 2nd wife, I assume that his 1st wife, Elizabeth THORP, was her mother. Who are Jesse COFFEE's parents? Thanks for any help. Norm Hare
