Posted on: Amherst County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Amherst?read=372 Surname: Bolling, Bowling ------------------------- Frank, Amherst, including what is now Nelson County, was formed from Albemarle County in 1761, for british hero of Ticonderoga, General Sir Jeffrey Amherst. Nelson County was formed from Amherst in 1807 for Thomas Nelson, Governor of Virginia from June to November 1781. So, it was after 1800. There wasn't a Nelson county before 1807. Hope this helps. Does anyone know of a WYLEY JOHNS in Amherst County in 1898. I am not sure of the spelling of his first name. Some family members believe that he was the biological father of JAMES OLIVER TERRY, born in 1898 to SARAH (SALLIE) ALICE GREENE TERRY, who was not married at the time. It is thought Wyley was in Detroit, MI in possibly the 1950's or 1960's. Wyley kept in touch with James through the years. In the early 1900's, Sarah was with ADDISON G. TERRY, who was first married to SEGUS GREEN LEE TERRY, thought to be Sarah's sister. Addison and Segus married in Dec. 1892. I am also searching for a marriage record for ADDISON and SARAH ALICE GREENE TERRY. It is thought that they may have been first cousins. They had several children together. I do not know what happened to Segus. I would be very grateful for any help on this family, births, deaths, marriages. Thank you in advance. Peggy Strieby Lakeland FL

If anyone has the book "Marriage Bonds and other Marriage Records of Amherst County, Virginia 1763-1800" reprinted in 1999, would you look in the index for any BURDEN and GOAD marriages? I would like to know before purchasing the book. Thank you, jlane@sonet.net
I am seeking information on Archibald BURDEN born abt. 1745 in Virginia and died 1805/1806 in Elbert County, Georgia. He probably married in Virginia to Hannah GOAD born abt 1745 and died before 1840 in Georgia. I would like to find both their parents and siblings families. You may email me at jlane@sonet.net
Hi List, Searching for the family and ancestors of PHILIP DAVIS who appeared in the Rockbridge Co. VA tax list in 1778. He most likely reappears in Washington CO. VA by 1782 and remains there until ca. 1806 when he disappears from the Washington Co. VA tax lists. His probable son was also named PHILIP DAVIS who married ANN HILLEN in 1803 in Washington CO. VA. Son Philip and Ann had 12 children including WILLIAM, JAMES, ANDREW, SARAH, REUBEN H., and JOHN BAILEY DAVIS. Any help appreciated, Nancy Helvey
My mouse hit the send button to quickly. Sorry about that. I am looking for Tax Lists with Canterberry/Canterburys in the 1770s. Anyone out there with resources who can check for these names? Thank you so much.
Beginning a couple of days ago, all queries that are posted on the GenConnect Query Boards located on the corresponding VAGenWeb site for that county will be automicatically transfered to the appropriate county mailing list. This should be very helpful to all of you. However, please remember either to reply directly to the person who wrote the query on the GenConnect board, or use the link provided to go straight to the post on the GenConnect board & reply there. Simply replying to the mailing list probably will NOT reach the person who wrote the original query. I hope you all enjoy this new feature, compliments of Rootsweb! Jeannie Listowner PS. Not all mailing lists have signed up for this feature, but if you subscribe to a list that I maintain, you will have this service available. ************* Jeannie Watts Now Available: "The Descendants of John Thomas Clay, Jamestown Immigrant and son of Sir John Clay of Wales" Also available: "The Descendants of James Bailey & Lucy Simms" For more info: http://www.trellis.net/users/madamx

I'm taking a mini-break from my Magann/Magan/McGann ancestors and working on my husband's line from Amherst Co. I'm already overwhelmed! I've gone from a relatively hard to find name like Magann to some very common names- I'm having a hard time sorting "mine" from the others. Maybe one of you has some information on one of these names: William M. Davis and Willie V. Staton married June 18, 1902, Amherst Co. William M.'s parents: I.A. Davis (Davies?) and E.P. Willie V.'s parents: Jas.(?) W. Staton and Susie A. Walter Benjamin Stinnett and Susie "Pearl" Burch married Dec. 28, 1910, Amherst Co. Walter's parents: W.E. Stinnett and Mollie Pearl's parents: Frank Burch and Emma William Huntley Richardson Sr and Susie V. Marsh married June 25, 1899, Amherst Co. William's parents: E.H. Richardson and Mary J. Susie's parents: W.F. Marsh and Susan Info. from my husband's grandpa: Pearl's sister's married a Rev. Figgars, the Davis/Stinnett family came from "Hog Camp" (he may have said Alto??), and Walter was one of the last surviving veterns of the Spanish American War. Please help me if you know anything about these families. Thank you! J. Berry

Hi! I am new to this list and thought I'd post my area of interest. I should say my very solid brick wall! I am searching for info on John Henry Ricketts. He was born in Amherst County, VA in 1839 and disappears from the face of the earth until 1860 when I find him in Smyth Co. Va. He lists Washington County, East TN as his home at that time (marriage application). He was the son of John W. Ricketts and Sarah Steward. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Marlene Avery
Hello everyone, I hope someone out there can help me. Among the many little bits of notes scattered on my computer table I found where I had jotted down William A. Magann, Cd 323, Census Index 1900 including VA. At the time, I didn't know he would turn out to be my great-great grandfather. Does anyone have this CD where they could look up the page number, township, and enumeration district for me? I want to send off to the National Archives for a copy of the census page. Thank you, J. Berry
Greetings and Happy Easter! I have only been working on these lines for a short while. I'm doing the searching/hunting for myself and my new found cousin, Marcy. Marcy and I have twin grandfather's in common. It's kind-of cool! The Slater line is from England and Connecticut....the other lines originated in Amherst County, Virginia and later settled in Jonesboro and Washington County, Tennessee. Briefly,... Samuel and Rhoda Beverly's daughter Sevanny (Luranny) Beverly married Reuben Tyree Luranny and Reuben Tyree had two daughters Lurany Dillard Tyree and Lucy Elizabeth Tyree who both married the same man, John William Slater. Their first born George William Slater married Ida M. Ullmann Their fifth child Mary Luranny Slater married Charles Ernest Ullmann (Marcy's grandparents) I'm the Ullmann connection too. Her grandfather Charles and mine,John were twin brothers! I would love to know more about the Samuel Beverly line (ancestors and descendants alike) and of course anything that someone might know about Sevanny(Luranny) Beverly Tyree. I'd also like to know more about Rhoda Terry and her line. I have her parents as William Terry and Dicey (Dicer) Curry. I've got William's parents as William Terry and Susan Turner... I also have Dicey's father as Harry Curry. Thanks for any help. Becky Newark, DE

Am seeking information on a William PETERS. According to information I have been given, William PETERS was a minister of the Anglican faith & the first of his line to come to the Colonies. I have found a William PETERS listed in the 1785 Heads of Families for Amherst County, VA. He is listed as one of 10 whites occupying the household. Undocumented information has William PETERS of Amherst County, VA. as father of the following children: *Jacob Zachariah Peters, born circa 1770, married Kesiah Lively 18 November 1794 in Amherst County, VA. (Most records list him as Zachariah) *Elisha Peters, married Jane Tiller 1 June 1792 in Amherst County, VA. *James Peters, married Elizabeth Stevens *Nancy Peters, married ??? in 1797 in Amherst County, VA. *John Peters, married Catherine Lane 4 January 1800 in Amherst County, VA. If this William PETERS is the same one listed in the 1785 Heads of Families in Amherst County, VA, then he may have been the father of at least 3 more children. Can anyone shed some light on the William PETERS family? Thank you in advance for any information you may have & for any guidance you may render. I look forward to reading your E-mails. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
