I received the following email which noted a proposed large increase in fees from the National Archives and Records Administration (effective THIS September). The biggest change will be in the military pension records. We will no longer be able to request just 20 pages or so for $10. We will HAVE to pay for the WHOLE file and it will cost $40 !! I agree that we should band together and voice our protest over this! Here is a summary of the increases (go to the sites to see for yourself: Proposed fees at: http://www.nara.gov/nara/fees-pro.html and current fees at: http://webgopher.nara.gov/11/about/cfr/public/1258.txt): DATES: Comments must be received by June 26, 2000. To the List, Thes are my THOMPSON ancestors and the family stories. maybe someone can help me find what unit that Dr. William Bartlett THOMPSON was in during the CIVIL WAR. gg gm widow Mrs. Delila POWELL, 'Dee's 1st husband: Rev James M STRINGFIELD md: 15 Jul 1833 AR d. 30 Sep 1862 AR He died 30 Sep 1862 AR Her parents: Samuel S. POWELL b. 9 Jan 1812 and Mary Agnes STONE b. 10 Sep 1820 KY Parents are in DeWitt Co., TX and can't find Delila name in her father's will. Family Story: my gg gf Dr. William Bartlett THOMPSON was a personal friend of Robert E. Lee ( don't know if that's when they were young men before the Civil War or during the war). Family said he didn't talk much about his home in VA or his dad or mom. ***He went to Portsmouth, VA some time in his life, and with another doctor cured the citizens of this town from some illness that a ship brought in to port. We don't know when this happened. The family has a cane and on top is gold and on the cane is written: TO Dr. WBT , thank you from the citizens of Portsmouth, VA. One of the wealthy merchants gave each doctor one of these canes. There was a fight over this cane before my g gf died and he gave it to one of his sons. In 1821 CABELL WOOD married ELIZABETH PHILLIPS, the daughter of JOHN & PENELOPE PHILIPS. Cabell and Elizabeth had: MARY WOOD in about 1823 OLIVER C. WOOD about 1825 (who married MARGARET CASKEY) ELIZABETH WOOD about 1828 (who married JAMES MITCHELL) and JAMES A. WOOD about 1835 (who married EMILY TYGRET). I am seeking information regarding their first child - daughter, MARY WOOD. CABELL WOOD died in 1862. His daughter, MARY WOOD's name does not appear on his will. According to an 1868 legal suite filed by CABELL's widow, "Betsy", and his two youngest children, MARY WOOD is identified as "the deceased daughter of Cabell Wood deceased". Other researchers report that a marriage license can be found for MARY WOOD to marry a JAMES WEAKLY/WEEKLY before she died - in about 1854. I am interested because, Mary Wood had one child before she died: AURORA ANN WOOD. AURORA'S name DOES appear on CABELL'S 1862 will. She is also identified in the 1868 suite as "the only child of Mary Wood deceased daughter of Cabell Wood deceased". MARY WOOD'S daughter AURORA ANN WOOD is my Great Grandfather's mother. Karen, This reply to your query is being sent to the Wright and Amherst lists for their information as well. Although the parents of 1776 (year of death) Augustine Wright of Amherst County, Virginia, (place of death) have not as yet been identified, I can offer you some information on his possible brothers 1825 Achilles Wright of Oldham County, Kentucky, and Parmenos Wright and on his wife Alsey (Ball) (Wright) Edmunds. Amherst County D.B. C/104 dated in 1768 listed the wife of Augustine Wright as Alice. The will of Valentine Ball dated Jan 12, 1769, and probated on March 5, 1770, at Amherst County W.B. 1/155 listed his wife as Susanna and his daughter as Alice Wright. In Lynchburg Superior Court Chancery File 1486 relating to the estate of Augustine Wright his wife is listed as both Alce and Alice Wright. The marriage bond of Alse Wright and Samuel Edmonds was dated on Sep 22, 1777, at Amherst County. The will of Samuel Edunds dated Jan 8, 1812, listed his wife as Alcey Edmunds. On Dec 26, 1817, Alcy Edmunds gave her deposition that she was the widow of Augustine Wright and after his death married Samuel Edmunds. I think this identifies 1776 Augustine Wright's wife as Alice or Alsey (Ball) (Wright) Edmunds and her parents as Valentine and Susanna Ball. Some Southern Balls stated that Alice was born about 1737 at St. Margaret Parish, Caroline County, Virginia, from which her parents moved in 1743 to Henrico County and then in 1760 to Albemarle County in a part which became Amherst County. Parmenos or Menos Wright was probably a brother of Augustine Wright. Their lands were described as adjacent to each other. 1825 Achilles Wright of Oldham County, Kentucky, was also probably a brother of Augustine Wright. Achilles Wright was a deponent in Chancery File 1486 regarding the will of Augustine Wright and stated that Parmenos Wright was present at the signing of the will. Moses Hughes testified that Achilles Wright and Parmenos Wright were present at the signing of Augustine's will and that Parmenos applied to administer the estate of Augustine Wright. The common classical names and the various connections between Augustine, Achilles, and Parmenos Wright suggest a family relationship and probably brothers. However, further research will be required to confirm that identification. I would be happy to exchange information about this family with other interested researchers. Robert N. Mitchell Floyd is my brick wall. He is listed in the Rev. War...receivied a pension here in Amherst. I find nothing on him until he m. Polly Goolsby in 1818, the daughter of Samuel and Ephpha (Marr) Goolsby. Mitchel and Polly had issue: John Jame, Edward C., F. Mildred and Alexander. John and Margaret Marr were parents of Ephpha or Effia Marr. I think Margaret was a Rucker but have no proof at this time. Effia was one of at least 5 children. Mitchel' son, John James m.
