    1. [VAAMHERS-L] About the Sandiges....
    2. Ann Wilmer
    3. I had a question from a list mate earlier today and thought I could not answer but I can at least give a partial answer based on the will of Zach T. Stinnett probated in Amherst County Court (Amherst Co. VA Will Book 24, page 83) because it was certified by a Sandige, to wit: "Given under my hand and seal this 24th day of July 1907. (Signed) Z. T. Stinnett (Seal) Test: James S. Bowman, John A. Ware [witnesses] Virginia: At a Circuit Court begun and held for the County of Amherst at the Court House thereof, on Monday the 19th day of August, 1907. Present: Hon. Bennett T. Gordon, sitting as a Court of Law The last will and testament of Z. T. Stinnett, deceased, bearing date on the 24th day of July 1907, was this day produced in Court and proved by the oaths of James S. Bowman and John A. Ware, two subscribing witnesses thereto, and is admitted to probate and ordered to be recorded. A. Copy. Teste: W. E. Sandidge, Clerk" I hope this helps somewhat. Phyllis Harvey of Rustberg is due the credit for the research. Listed below are the Genconnect message boards that I have requested and received for our use. Please make use of them by adding your input. Hopefully, we will all benefit from this additional resource. I would suggest that you copy & past the urls so there will be no mistake when you try to get to one. Phyllis This link should be useful for turning up some other information that dates the times in which particular members of the Sandige family were serving as clerks of court. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/s/t/STINNETT/wills

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Wilmer/Wilmore data -- LONG post
    2. Ann Wilmer
    3. For some time I've been corresponding with Wilmers that I can locate and one of my "cousins" is a pretty knowledgeable genealogist. Here's some information on the lines we are researching. If you have something to share with Shirley Parmenter <sharm@ida.net> or me <wilmer@shore.intercom.net we'd love to hear from you. And I've added some information from Michael McMillen, another cousin at jewelerdoc@mindspring.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >From records of the marriage of Reubin Wilmore to Sarah Stinnett in Amherst county, we discover that James Wilmore was the groom's father. James, a widower was married in 1790 to his second wife Nancy McMahon (from their son Reubin's marriage record). We don't know the name of his first wife and we aren't clear about children from that marriage or his second except for my own line. We have some of it pieced together, at least in theory. I'm unclear of this guy's relationship to Reubin and James but, in the 1850 census we find a William Wilmore & Sarah and children, (1) William married Nancy Harrison (& son Willis C.) and (2) Leroy married Martha Jane McCarey. William had son (1) John who married Sally Bates and (2) Ambrose who married Lucinda Reed & their children. Ambrose Wilmer witnessed the marriage of Benjamin Lawless & Polly Wilmore (whom I believe was James Willmore's daughter). Shirley found a deed that mentions Lindsey Coleman, son-in-law. James Wilmore is also the witness for the marriage of James Coleman to Patsey Willmore in 1823. I can't prove it but suspect that Patsey was another of James' children. As uncommon as the name Wilmore (Wilmer etc.) is even with its variations, Shirely and I believe the two different families in the same county are related. YET: Shirley writes: "I found a few sparse entries in published material at libraries lately and it shows there is the definite connection of some Wilmores (who show up in Amherst later) that come from King & Queen earlier. The only connections we can make is the similarity of names -- such as Lindsey, which is uncommon for the times and must come from a maiden name somewhere. Our family was not sure where Lindsey went but there definitely is one out in Tennessee." My family has Lindseys, too, including one who would have been my grandfather's uncle, Lindsey Wilmore, who died in the Battle of Seven Pines (near Richmond). Shirley's older Henry Willmore (b. 1774) appears to have had a sister named Lindsey. There defintely was a "Wiley Wilmore" early in Macon & he must have died or left the area. Another name Shirely and I have in common is "Bradley" as in Bradley Thomas Wilmore, son of Reubin and a "Brantly" who was (maybe) a son of Henry. The name James appears often. Also Shireley's Ensley had a Leroy and there is a Leroy in the line of Glenn Wilmer (Monroe). Shirley doesn't know where "Ensley's" name came from. But my branch has some real gems, too! Does anyone have a copy of the Wilmores from the 1787 published census? The Thomas, Christopher and Henry Wilmore are from King & Queen. Some of us seem to have stopped there enroute to Amherst. 1787 Tax Lists of Virginia - King and Queen County (personal property lists) Thomas Wilmore self 1 0 0 2 7 Christr Wilmore self 0 0 1 2 3 Henry Wilmore self 0 0 0 2 4 I am stuck on James &........ or Nancy, Shirley is stuck on Henry. Henry Wilmore's wife might be Flora. Shirley says she has never found a marriage (which ought to show up in Virginia or NorthCarolina - most likely N.C.). Shirley hasn't found a census entry but thinks Flora's birthplace might be New Jersey (strange - early out in Tennessee) It is really strange that Flora was living with one child in 1850 and Henry with another. Could she be a second wife? We haven't a clue.No one in the family knows anything. It was the first clue Shirley found 44 years ago. Enter another "cousin" Michael McMillen who traces his line from Cecellia Wilmore and John Wilmore. She died in 1739 Daniel Wilmore (1701 -1774) and Mary Reynolds John Wilmore ( 1748 - 1779) and Mary Clayton (1752 - 1791) William Wilmore (1774 - 1856) and Nancy Harrison (1779 - 1803) (Note that William was only 5 years old when his father died and was 17 when his mother died. More on this later.) John Harrison Wilmore (1799 - 1872) and Sarah Bates (1802 - 1835) Josiah Harrison Wilmore (11830 - 190?) and Sarah Douglas 1830 - 1863) Mary Jane Wilmore (1858 - 1916) and Joseph Warren McMillen (1855 - 1922) Dale Wilmore McMillen (1880 - 1971) and Agnes Dell Stewart (1883 - 1971) Harold Wilmore McMillen (1906 - 1984) and Eileen Dunbar Burk McMillen Trask( 1915 - Michael Wilmore McMillen (1940 - My cousin, A.T. Powell in Richmond thinks that James and John are brothers and that he helped to bring up his nephew after John's death. Anaother "cousin," Janet Wilmer Pinkerton decends from Ambrose Wilmer who married Sweenda (last name unknown). Is this the Ambrose who witnessed the marriage of Polly Wilmore to Benjamin Lawless? If James helped to bring up his nephew and if Ambrose is, as we think, a son of James, then he was not only a cousin but more like an uncle to Polly. At any rate Ambrose had a son, Thomas John Wilmer who married Frances (last name?) His son Albert Wilmer married Judith Noel. * Their son John Thomas Wilmer married Fannie Rogers. * Their son, Carlton Wilmer married Hillie Bradner and he was Janet Wilmer Pinkerton's father. Any clues of thoughts are welcome as all of us, except Janet, are miles and miles away from Amherst County. Ann Wilmer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: King and Queen - the courthouse burned in 1864 so any early records on a county basis were put together manually from other sources.

    3. Posted on: Amherst County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Amherst?read=453 Surname: Phelps ------------------------- I have been searching for the parents of my ggrandfather, James Burks(Berks) Phelps who lived in Amherst Co. for many years. He was a Confederate veteran and died in 1904 at Six Mile Bridge. He may have been the son of James and Frances Phelps of Amherst Co. If this is true, his other siblings would have been Charles, John, Joseph, Sarah Frances, Mahala, and Susan. James B. worked on the canal and in the 1850 census father James was listed as a lockkeeper. JamesB. married Amanda Elizabeth Doss of Appomattox Co. in Dec. 1865. Their daughter Emma Frances was my grandmother. Does anyone have any further information which might prove that this is the correct family grouping? Thank you so much for any help. 1. [VAAMHERS-L] Turners: Caleb, Stephen, James, Jeremiah & Joseph 18th Century
    2. Lois Masters
    3. I am new to this list and am trying to identify the parents of Stephen Turner born about 1760 in Virginia who married Mary Roundtree 16 July 1782 in Bedford Co., Va. From all appearances, Stephen does not fit with the Bedford Co., Va Turners. It appears that the Stephen Turner who died in Amherst Co., Va has his children well-documented. However, there is a Stephen Turner who was deceased in 1795 in Amherst Co., Virginia. Does anyone know the identity of these children? In the Northern District of Bedford Co., Va, there is only one Turner besides my Stephen Turner. That is James Turner. My Stephen Turner immigrates to Lincoln Co., Kentucky in 1795 which coincides with the death of the Stephen Turner of Amherst Co., Va. No Turners appear in Lincoln Co., Kentucky until this time. James Turner then appears - identified as a non-resident - and has 500 acres in Green County (pulled from Lincoln County)on the Green River. Caleb Turner appears in Lincoln County. He is frequently close to my Stephen Turner on the tax lists. He witnesses the marriage of one of the daughters of Stephen Turner. Caleb also is married to a Colvin - a family into which Stephen Turner's descendants marry. These families go on into Washington Co., Indiana. In addition Joseph Turner is a deputy sheriff in Lincoln Co., Ken in Oct 1798 and 1798. In 1801, Joseph pays taxes in Lincoln Co., Kentucky. Jeremiah Turner died in Lincoln Co., Ken in 1801 leaving a widow, Ann who remained in Lincoln Co - owning 125 acres on Hanging Fork. I am interested in the ancestry and origins of any of the men listed above. I have been searching for several years. Amherst County, Va seems the most reasonable point of origin for my Stephen. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide. Lois ===== My personal website: http://members.networld.com/masters/index.html __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Posted on: Amherst County Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Amherst?read=452 Surname: Turner, Roundtree, Colvin ------------------------- Stephen Turner married Mary Roundtree 16 July 1782 in Bedford Co., Va. He remains in Bedford Co., Va in the Northern Tax District until 1794. The only other Turner in the Northern Tax District is James Turner. Stephen Turner then goes to Lincoln Co., Kentucky. A James Turner of Amherst Co., Va has 500 acres on the Green River in Green County showing on the Lincoln Co., Kentucky 1795 tax lists. In some records, it is stated that James Turner is a non-resident. The Roundtrees, in-laws to Stephen Turner, show up briefly on the Lincoln Co., Kentucky tax lists before their property appears in Green County - Green County having been taken from Lincoln Co., Kentucky. In 1799 Caleb Turner began paying taxes in Lincoln Co., Kentucky. He was associated with Stephen Turner in two ways - After Stephen's death, Caleb was a witness at the marriage of a daughter of Stephen. Secondly, Caleb married a Colvin in 1801 in Lincoln Co., Ken. Stephen's children married and/or were closely associated with Colvins in Washington Co., Indiana In 1801, Joseph and Jeremiah Turner appear on the Lincoln Co., Ken tax lists. Joseph was a deputy sheriff in Lincoln Co., Ken in 1797 and 1798. Jeremiah died in 1801. His widow, Ann Turner owned 125 acres on Hanging Fork in Lincoln Co., Ken. Evidence does show that James Turner was from Amherst Co., Va. Stephen Turner is a common name in Amherst Co., Va. I note that the Stephen Turner who died in 1801 has his children quite well documented. But there is a Stephen Turner who died around 1795 in Amherst Co., Va. I have not seen a list of his children. This would coincide with the period when my Stephen left Bedford Co., Va for Lincoln Co., Kentucky. Can you help me identify how my Stephen Turner/Molly Roundtree is connected to the Amherst Co., Va Turners. Link: Virginia West to Oregon URL: <http://members.networld.com/masters/index.html>

In 1765 my William PHELPS owned 170 acres of land lying on both sides of Raven Creek of Buffalo River in Amherst County beginning at the mouth of a Branch on the south folk of Raven Creek running new lines (new Property) southwest. He purchased this from Dr. Wm. CABELL. as most folks did in that time period. In 1770 they sold it to James MARTIN, of Parish of St. Ann's, Albermarle Co., VA. I have also found a patent for John PHILLIPS in 1774 in Amherst Co. for 203 acres on the branches of Raven Creek of Buffaloe River. A very simular discription. Can you identify this John PHILLIPS? If so, please tell me about him. I am wondering if he was related to my William PHELPS. Thanks you. Mary

Some of the surnames listed are members of the Monacan Nation of Virginia. Lawless, Burch, or they married into the tribe, Coleman, Grant, Moon. There was a Richard LAWLESS active in Amherst from 1785-1810. He was married twice. I do not know the name of his first wife, and I only have two children from his first marriage. His second marriage was to Elizabeth GOODRICH on 25 June 1785 in Amherst. I have four children listed from this marriage. It is believe by another researcher that there were more child from this marriage. Therefore, Rosannah LAWLESS may have been a daughter, it is also possible that Benjamin LAWLESS could be a son. 2. Pam
    3. Looking for information on the family of WILL BIRCH (BURCH) - that appears on the 1900 Amherst Co., VA census report. Our William Burch was born about 1864 to LEANNA BURCH of Amherst Co. and married JENNIE ROBERTS (daughter of MARGARET ROBERTS, and sister to PETER) sometime around 1881. The first dau listed would be my GreatGrandma, ROSE LEE BURCH. Siblings listed follow suite: NANNIE and PATE BURCH. GEORGIANNA BURCH, not listed, was born later that year. Nannie & Pate both married BEVERLYS - Georgianna we believe married a FRANK RODGERS son of CHRIS and SHELLY RODGERS, and brother to ALLY RODGERS. Rose Lee Burch also reportedly had two brothers SAMUEL & TOBE BURCH (perhaps the "baby - 2" listed here) who may have later used their mother's ROBERTS name. The only other census report that I have a copy of which includes Will BURCH's family is the 1920 in which Will & Jennie appear alone. Anyone on the list who might have a copy of the 1910 with a section that would include this family OR anyone on the list who be connected to them in anyway - please contact me. Happy to share. 3. Here are some Magan/Magann marriages I jotted down a previous trip to the courthouse. (If anyone wonders why I write a bunch of marriages down every courthouse trip: I'm a collector of information. I just compile and compile, then periodically sort through it all and organize it and see if anything connects. Then it's all at my fingertips when I need it.) Janet Feb 1, 1857 John D. 3. Janet , you did a good thing by posting in detail how to research marriages. I wish someone had been that explicit with me when I was just getting started. Going to the courthouse anywhere can be a daunting experience for a beginner. Thanks! Cousin Mary in OK Mary Bryant Park crosstich@webtv.net

Not dumb at all, I'm only just now learning my way around the courthouse. I should have explained to the list too because a few more people sent me questions. There are marriage index books in the courthouse for male surnames and female surnames. I looked in the index for males and copied from one and a half pages in the S section all of the Stinnett and Staton names I could find in the few minutes I had to do so. The index tells the name of the parties (the male book listing the husband's name first in alphabetical order, the female book listing the brides in alphabetical order) The index also gives the date and what book and page number they are in. You find the names you are looking for, note the book and page number and then retrieve the appropriate book ( they are labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) from the shelf. You turn to the page number listed in the index and there is the information you need- names of parties getting married, their age, race, husband's occupation, names of their parents and who married them. Basically everything that is on the certificate. You can also use the index to just look up the date and names and instead of looking in the marriage books, go directly to the drawers with the original marriage certificates in them (when you walk in the records room they are on the wall on your right) and take them to the desk to be copied. There is also a very old marriage index and marriage book with marriages circa 1700's in them located in the opposite corner from the certificates and other marriage books. They are tucked away, so you have to look for them. Good luck on your trip and if I can help in any further way let me know. Janet __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Here are some more Staton/Staten & Stinnett (male surnames) marriages from Amherst County, VA. These are from marriage book 3 which is still not in the courthouse, so I was unable to look up parent names to go with them. But, the certificates are there and I think you can mail the courthouse for copies- I pay $2.00 a copy when I'm there. Janet Nov 6, 1872 Wm S. Stinnett to Nancy N.
