Hi list, I made my last trip for a while to the Amherst courthouse and museum for a few hours today. I got some marriages from the courthouse and some births (1867 to 1879) from the museum. Marriage books 1, 2, & 3 (the books that give you further detail on the marriage) are still not there and the marriage bonds before 1854 are not back from being copied, but a worker there said they expected them anytime and to check back in about a month or so. Didn't find much to help my research, but maybe some of this will help one of you. I will be sending the information in separate e-mails as I get it typed. Surnames include SPENCER, AYRES, HOLMAN, HOOPER, BONDURANT, BAKER, JONES, GILLIAM I recently came into possession via the Internet of a very old, very damaged family Bible. Although the first entries are for the family of Moses Spencer b 1763 and Judith Ayres b 1768 his wife and their children; it is apparently not Moses Spencer's bible since all these entries were made in the same hand and apparently at the same time; but probably that of his son Moses Ayres Spencer and was passed down thru his son Samuel Ayres Spencer who died in 1904. Although the front page is missing along with much of Genesis, it appears from other material printed in the bible to be an 1815 bible. From some included family notes, it appears to have come out of Buckingham County although the last previous Virginia owner lives in Patrick County, Va. The Family Register pages in particular are very fragile and one is only a fragment. I have an appointment with a professional conservator for advice. I plan to publish here all information that I find and to donate the bible to The Library of Virginia and to in particular have them publish images of the register pages as well as transcriptions of those entries probably later this year. Please stay tuned for further information. Rob Ayres

There is an Amherst county court document dated Dec 19, 1803: David and Jas. Garland, AC, to Zach., Geo., and Harry Ann Mitchell or survivors - stock and furniture - now at Jno. Mitchel's -- to the 3 children in trust and their mother Betsy Mitchell, for support. Wit. Demund Holeman. I am descended through Harry Ann Mitchell. Anyone out there researching David and Jas. Garland or Demund Holeman? Has anyone found a marriage between one of these families and the Mitchell family? Thanks for whatever assistance you can offer! Debbie
Is anyone aware of a relationship between the Sandidge family and Mitchell family of Amherst county? I am trying to track down one of my ancestors, John Mitchell who married Elizabeth Hardwick. Their daughter, Harriet "Harry" Ann Mitchell married Jarvis Haydon and I'm descended through them. I believe that my John Mitchell may have gone to Kentucky and left his family in Amherst county. There is an Amherst county court document dated Sept 16, 1805: Jno. Mitchell, Madison Co., KY to Waller Sandidge, A C, for 150 English pounds, and 2 slaves. Wit. Jno Sandidge, Stephen Carter and proved by them in AC, February 17, 1806. Anyone out there related to Jno or Waller Sandidge or perhaps to Stephen Carter? Have you found any marriages with the Mitchell family? Any help appreciated. Thanks! Here's another gen from Phyllis Harvey. I think I have an idea where this parcel is, at least a general idea. There is a Wilmer-Stinnett Cemetery at the base of Stinnett Mountain and this land was owned at one time by my grand-uncle, George Wilmer. I think it could be the same property or an adjoining one. Someone with a better handle on Amherst geography can say better than I. -----Original Message----- From: PHAR30@aol.com <PHAR30@aol.com> To: STINNETT-L@rootsweb.com <STINNETT-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, March 24, 2000 6:34 PM Subject: [STINNETT] Deed: Stinnett, Cornelius I'm on a roll!
