    1. [VAAMHERS-L] regarding biographical sketches:
    2. J.B.
    3. The brief biographical sketches of some Amherst men came from a little booklet called "Amherst County Families and History" compiled from Henry Hardesty's Historical and Geographical Encyclopaedia first published 1883. It was edited, indexed, and available from: Jim Presgraves, ABAA Bookworm & Silverfish P.O. Box 639 Wytheville, VA 24382 I think he offers catalogues too. The lady at the Amherst Co. museum also told me that she had recently been in contact with this publisher and they were thinking of offering reprints of the book through the museum. She thought the price would be $20. It's a very thin, small book, but filled with information including Civil War soldiers, Geography, Revolutionary War soldiers, and Family Histories. If your ancestor is in there, it's definitely worth the money I think. The museum's web address is: http://members.aol.com/achmuseum/achmhis.htm

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Amherst County Lookups done!
    2. J.B.
    3. Hi list, I got to go to the courthouse and museum. I tried to cover everyone on my list in the short time I had (it's about tripled since the last time I posted it.) Both times I passed the Episcopal church, the rector did not appear to be there, so I was unable to look for any births other than what the museum had: (1867-1879) For several of the queries, I was unable to find information in the courthouse- perhaps you may want to check neighboring counties. I didn't get to stay as long in the museum as I would've liked and they may have further info. to help some of you. In case someone doesn't know their web address it is: http://members.aol.com/achmuseum/achmhis.htm They are most helpful and friendly and will do genealogical research for a fee per hour I believe. This will be my last genealogy trip for some time. With a new baby on the way and a toddler who has decided to give up naps completely- my free time is dwindling! I will be sending various posts as I get them typed. I hope I have helped some folks out and inspired others to try and go to their local courthouse to help others who may be just as far from their county of interest as you are from yours. Best of luck in all your searches! Janet

    3. Carol, Do you KNOW of a connection between a Jarvis family of Amherst Co., VA and this Roberts family? I'm not sure about how it originally appeared. The information I viewed was transcribed. Could possibly be, I guess. I know there WERE Jarvises in the area, and never thought of that. <silly grin> Maybe I'll follow that lead for a while. Thank you for responding. Pam pamjt@saa.net

    2. Pam
    3. Has anyone on this list come across a member of the JIKES family residing in Amherst Co., VA around 1870? My female "headed" ROBERTS family had a JAMES JIKES residing in their household on the 1870 Amherst Co., VA census report. He is 40 years old and listed as a farm hand. I have not uncovered any other JIKES families living in the family OR in the area - though I admit I have only seen a section of this census report and perhaps one of you have more info than I have viewed. 2. Yvonne Stone Slonaker
    3. Posted on: Amherst County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Amherst/510 Surname: Rhodes, Proffitt ------------------------- I am searching for a death date and place of burial for Sarah Otelia "Teelie" Proffitt Rhodes. Her husband, James Preston Rhodes, died Oct. 3, 1915 and is buried in Meade Cemetery in Amherst Co., but she, who survived him, was according to family sources buried in a small, private cemetery somewhere in Amherst Co. He was a member of the Amherst Episcopal Church. I could not find her in the 1920 census so am assuming that she died between 1915 and 1920. Could anyone give me names and addresses of funeral homes in the area which would have been in operation during those dates? Does anyone know if the Episcopal Church might have church records dating to this time? Thanks for any help you can give me. Yvonne

Believe his name was actually Samuel Ellis(Elias) MARTIN, as shown by the 1860 census. A 1845 deed shows he bought property from a Judith or Judah Martin-no relationship shown. I think his family may have been in Amherst since before 1776, as I have found many Martin's. Several Martin's married Lawhorne's. Any info on all names would be appreciated!
