Posted on: Amherst County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Amherst/518 Surname: Proffitt, Hughes ------------------------- I know that Obediah is somehow related to my family of Proffitts, but at this point I'm not sure how. As far as I can tell he is not in a direct line of descent, probably a cousin of my gggrandfather, James C. Proffitt. I looked on the list of Proffitt names that I got from the Winch database on the Proffitt-L address at Rootsweb, and this is what I found, but you would need some verification of this as I can't vouch that it is accurate. Elizabeth Ann Proffitt, daughter of Obadiah W. Proffitt, b. 6 Mar. 1785, d. 26 April 1877; and Anita Theany Ryan, b. abt 1797. Elizabeth Ann was born 12 Apr. 1826 and died 27 Nov. 1895; married Joohn J. Hughes; one child listed William David Hughes born abt. 1851. My guess is that you could find a marriage record for them somewhere in Amherst Co. if that is where they were married. They have some very old records. Birth records for additional children should also be available. Do you know if they stayed in the Amherst Co. area? I have found the people at the courthouse there to be very helpful. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. Yvonne
