    3. Posted on: Amherst County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Va/Amherst/673 Surname: McCLAIN ------------------------- Haven't done much on the McClains recently. I don't recall anything on David McClain. Like Don Marsh, I'm just trying to figure out who was who in Amherst County, with little success. My line went to Marion County, Iowa and from there to Oregon and Washington, so I have a lot of backtracking to do!

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] David McClain of Amherst County
    2. Luther McLain
    3. Posted on: Amherst County Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Va/Amherst/671 Surname: McClain ------------------------- Hi Nancy. I am sure you have seen the discussion by Don Marsh of McClainExchange on your subject and I'm afraid I can't add anything. However, in discussing this riddle, Don Marsh stated: "A land deed on February 15, 1796 in Amherst County, Virginia (Book G, page 677) JAS. FRASER and wife MARGARET to JAS. Clark, refers to land adjacent to DAVID McCLAIN. No other record of a DAVID McCLAIN in Amherst County has surfaced. Who was he?" In your research of the McClains have you come across anything on DAVID McCLAIN in AMHERST or adjacent counties? I am a descandent of DAVID McClain b. c. 1711, died 1813 Shelby County, Kentucky. He possibly was in North Carolina in 1778 and Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1789, arrived in Mercer County, Kentucky about 1790. His son John was in Bedford County, Virginia in 1783. Would appreciate anything you might have on above DAVID or any indication the MCCLAINS in Amherst/Nelson Counties are tied to those of Bedford County, Virginia. Thanks! Luther

    1. Re: [VAAMHERS-L] LANHAM Family
    2. Ann Wilmer
    3. You might be interested to know that there is a town called Lanham just east of Washington, DC on State Route 450 near New Carrollton in present day Prince George's County. I checked "The Placenames of Maryland: Their Origin & Meaning." Hamill Kenney, Museum and Library of the Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore. 1984. And found this: LANHAM, A village near Seabrook, Prince George's County. It is on Martenet's map, 1866. On p. 21 Farquahar mentions Aaron Lanham, one of the seventeen members of the first Montgomery Grand Jury, August 12, 1777. I cannot find the reference for Farquahar although I'm pretty certain he is one of the several gazetteers whose work Kenney consulted when making his compilation. Copies of Kenney's book would probably be available from many libraries in the area although in the reference section (not to be checked out). And you might be able to get some additional information (although probably for a fee) from the Maryland Historical Society's library in downtown Baltimore.
