    3. Janet, You wrote asking about the list of first settlers mentioned by Alexander Brown. I found these lists in William and Mary's Swem Library, Special Collections, in the papers of Alexander Brown. I had copies made of them. Special Collections is now located at Toana on Route 60 because of renovations to Swem. I have been there several times, including once last week. I don't mind sharing these lists or printing the names here. I want to be careful about copyright laws, however. You may e-mail me privately if interested. I am trying to unsub from these lists to change e-mail soon. I am in the Lynchurg area. 3. In reading Alexander Brown’s book The Cabels and Their Kin, page 72, he said that he had a list of “names of about 3000 of the first settlers of this region” and “I believe, nearly all of the first landowners….” Does anyone know where one might find this list? I asked at Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg and the librarian couldn't find it in their database. Does such a list exist? Thanks, Janet

    2. Hello, Sarah. Just wanted to say hello. I am typing this with my left hand. I had surgery on my right hand last Friday for nerve damage. When you have to, you learn do what you can with one hand. Get rid of the bandages and brace next week. How is your research coming along? Have had to put mine on hold, can't drive for awhile. Also, I need to go through my file cabinet and sort my information. Need to get rid of all the extra copies of informtion that I have. Maybe find some "new" information, I did not know that I had. Let me hear from you. Your Texas cousin, Chris

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] High Peak Orchard: Lee, Hicks, Burford, Morrison, Rucker, Campbell
    2. My ultimate goal is to locate the Lee Family Cemetery on the East side of Tobacco Rowe Mountain, near Hick's store. In that search, here are the family and place names I have run accross. Please let me know if any of them rings a bell that might help identify the land "on the ground" today. Any ideas about someone familiar with the neighborhood of High Peak Orchard also will be appreciated. I've driven in the area, seen what I think is the High Peak Orchard, including High Peak Orchard Rd., but not seen anything that resembles a cemetery. Really need someone "in the neighborhood" who might have literally stumbled across a tombstone while hiking or hunting. 1. Thomas Lee's farm was sold in a partition suit after his widow Sally Clements died in 1880. March 4, 1890, the home place of 110 acres, near Hicks' store, was conveyed to Charles W. Hicks. The deed reserves a half acre family burying ground. 2. Charles Hicks and his wife Margaret sold the 110 acres on February 2, 1912 to Russell J. Burford. 3. Russell J. Burford and his wife Zada convey 110 acres to James Morrison on January 11 and March 25, 1915. Land is described as on Bethany Road, near Harris Creek, five miles from Monroe. Adjacent landowners are James E. Edwards and J. H. Hamilton. 4. A right of way granted to Appalachian Power on June 14, 1940 for a nearby property (maybe even this property) says the property is bounded by State Road #636 on the east, T. M. Campbell on the north, Henry Jones and Hattie Rucker on the south. 5. On March 17, 1941, James Morrison's executor and others convey 317 acres, including at least part of the 110 acres, to High Peak Orchards, Inc. The plat references a school lot on the east side of the road. The last two deeds do not recite the cemetery reservation so I am not clear if the cemetery is on the east or west side of the road. Anyone know if High Peak Orchards, Inc. is still active? Anyone know this area well enough to have spotted a cemetery? Know a neighbor who would not mind a letter? Thanks. Sandy Rowe (aka, William Lee Sandidge Rowe) Richmond, Va.

    3. Can anyone tell me who wrote the "notes" that appear on the Amherst Co., marriage record reels? And the story behind them? On several of the entries you will find "see above". Above appears "See (individual's name given) correspondence in Rac Int. File - Amherst Co." What is this "Rac Int File" and what sort of "correspondence" are they referring to? On another I found "NOTE: See old records for another child of (individual's name given) 1894 Registration Colored". Thanks to anyone who understands these notes and can help. Please feel free to be open with me - but if this appears to be a delicate subject, you can email me personally. PamT pamjt@cityofbryan.net

    3. Dear Robert & everyone else following - I think you may be onto something. It appears the marriage info from Charles Wright & Polly Eubank show something else that's got me pretty excited.... Mar. 2, 1808 Charles Wright & Polly Eubank, dt Ambros Charles Burton, Surety William S. Wright (April 22, 1812 - September 22, 1887), a known resident of Gilmer County in his latter years, named his first son Charles Wright....then named another son Ambrose Eubank Wright. The Gilmer County death register shows his birthplace as Amherst County...I can settle for Beford. Needless to say, BOTH Charles & Ambrose were "unusual" names around this area, and the combination "Ambrose Eubank" is definately cause for further investigation! Any chance anyone can do a lookup in case Charles had an estate listed a child or two ??? Thanks a million in advance! »§«·.,¸¸,.·´¯`·.,¸¸,.·´¯`·.»§« Kristy Wright Edenfield mailto:kedenfield@sc.rr.com 397 Medway Drive Orangeburg, SC 29118 (803) 531-0119 -----Original Message----- From: Robert N Grant [mailto:RNGRANT@prodigy.net] Sent: June 05 2001 06:40 PM To: Kristy Edenfield Cc: VAAMHERS-L@rootsweb.com; rng Subject: Re: [VAAMHERS-L] I need some WRIGHT aid :-) Kristy, As a further follow up to your email, there was one Wright family that has similar names to yours and that family was William Wright, Sr. (Bedford County). William Wright Sr. was born before 1762 and probably before 1752, resided in Bedford County, Virginia, and had four identified children: 1. William Wright, Jr., born before Mar 26, 1767, and married Ann Neel or O'Neal on Mar 27, 1788, at Bedford County, Virginia, 2. Richard Wright, born before Aug 31, 1782, 3. Charles Wright, born after 1774 and before Jun 9, 1783, and married Polly Eubank on Mar 2, 1808, at Bedford County, Virginia, and 4. Jane (Wright) Waters, born probably before 1791 and married to John Waters on Dec 22, 1806, at Amherst County, Virginia. This family lived in northern Bedford County near the Amherst County border and a Charles Wright, possibly the same Charles as listed above, shows up in the Amherst County Personal Property Tax Lists in 1833 and thereafter. Jane (Wright) Waters and her husband John Waters moved to Hall County, Georgia, in about 1808. I noticed you are from South Carolina. The combination of names William, Charles, Eubank, and Richard in this family and their proximity to Amherst County suggested them as a possible connection and your William S. Wright might be a son of Charles Wright and Polly (Eubank) Wright. Let me know if any of this is of any help to you. Best wishes, Robert N. Grant

    3. Dear Kristy, There is no probate for this Charles Wright in Amherst or Bedford County. Charles Wright disappears from the Bedford County Personal Property Tax Lists in 1825. I suspect that he moved to a new location about that time. Since Gilmer County, West Virginia, was not formed until 1845, you may want to check its parent counties Kanawha and Lewis for records on this family. If you will send me your post office address, I will be happy to share what I have on the family of William Wright, Sr., and his son Charles Wright. I would much appreciate your doing the same for your William S. Wright. Best wishes, Robert N. 3. Kristy, My records list the following two marriages: 1. William Wright and Anne Tomlinson on Feb 17, 1834, at Amherst County, Virginia, with Ambrose Tomlinson as surety. 2. William Wright and Elizabeth Ann Mitchell on Dec 6, 1837, at Amherst County, Virginia, with Little Berry Tucker as surety. With children Ambrose Wright and Mickleberry "Berry" Wright, either or both of these marriages could be for your William S. Wright. I do not find William S. Wright listed in the 1850 or 1860 Census for Amherst County and he may have moved to that part of Virginia that became West Virginia before that time. If you could identify when this family moved to West Virginia, I might be able to help further.
