    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Early Settlers
    2. Thank you so much for posting this list of early settlers!!   Does anyone know the location of "the upper part of St. Anne's Parish?"  Several of my ancestors were listed on the tax records as living there from 1745 to 1747.  By 1749 they had purchased land on the Pedlar River in the vicinity of Tobacco Row Mountain which was located in "old Albemarle County,"  but current day Amherst County.  Are these 2 areas one and the same, or was St. Anne's more to the Northwest? Thanks for your help! Anne Bays

    2. John or Pam
    3. I never DID receive the virus attachment after my posting to this list, as I expected. I have noticed that "Janet" posts her messages to both the Bedford and the Amherst mailing list. After she posted that message about the virus, someone else from the Bedford list wrote that THEY had received the attachement too. I haven't seen anyone else on the Amherst do that. So, I suspect that the person with the infected computer is not on the Amherst list, but on the Bedford list instead. (Either that, or the infected person has already corrected the problem or unsubscribed and are no longer receiving our post.) Are you still out there "Janet"? I ALWAYS enjoy whatever you post. The things you have shared with us have always been so informative. For me, at least, I would not be able to view these things otherwise as I am unable to travel to the area where you get them. Did you notice whether the virus came "Re: VAAMHERS" or "Re: VABEDFORD" ? PamT

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] FREE VIRUS SCAN
    2. william & carrie hoffert
    3. Here is an url to McAfee, that will completely scan your PC for FREE, after you reach the page find the TEST DRIVE under SCAN, that gives you the Free complete scan. If you have a virus and it will tell you on your screen what & Where, then you need to purchase their fix program. Or you can go to the other Url I have below and they may have the information for removing it your self. Generally a worn does so much damage that it requires professional help to get it fixed. A friend recently was infected with this worm being discussed. She had the computer fixed and contacted me once and since then I cannot send mail to her, it just gets returned. So obviously the situation is not totally fixed. By the way once you have opened these pages it would be a good idea to put them into your favorites program for when you need them again. here is the scan URL http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/vso/default.asp? Here is a general Virus site Symantec, for info and fixes http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html When You receive an attachment that looks suspicious, then you can type in the name of the attachment you received and they can tell you if it is a virus, what it does etc. I also agree with a prior list member, send the person that you got the email from one email telling them they are infected, some of these have a delayed payload and so they don't know they are infected for long periods of time. Also as stated by that person it does not matter who the sender is you should be wary opening any email attachments, generally you will receive a virus from someone you know, my brother's PC tried to send me one using an email my brother had mailed to me months earlier, with a photo attached. Hope this helps. Carrie Bias Hoffert

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Virus/worms/trojans
    2. John or Pam
    3. I just wanted to say that it is very true that the person who is infected with this virus probably does NOT even know that they have it. (But they should SOON when their computer starts acting up.) What happens is when you "open" the attachment, it infects YOUR computer and begins sending itself out to every unread message in your inbox. (So you can be away from home for a while, and if you computer is on-line and receiving mail the virus will be infecting every piece of mail that comes in). What the virus does to convince you to open it, is to include a portion of the post that you sent to the infected person (or to your mailing list and THAT went to the person). When you recognize your own post, you think the attachment is legit and that the sender has actually sent something to you. If the only message you recieve in a returned message is "take a look to the attachment" - you should be curious. Most people would say more to you than that. The difficult thing about this virus (actually I THINK it's a trojan or worm) is that it can spread like wildfire on Mailing List. Because every time someone posts a message to the mailing list it goes to EVERY one on the list. If a person on the list is infected - when your message goes into their inbox, you get the virus sent to you (I should be receiving it shortly after sending this). Each person who has sent a message today should shortly get portion of their message back with the attachment on it (or some time soon - whenever it is collected by the infected person's inbox). The GOOD thing about it is, the infected person's name appears in the "sender" box. If you receive the attachment message it might be a good idea to let that person (or the list, whatever) know WHO you got it from. Then the person can correct the problem. There is free virus scan on-line (by Trend I think) that you can run on your computer simply by going to the website and opting to have your computer scanned. It will let you know if you have it and either provide a "fix" for it, or give you instructions for removing it yourself. Better get to it right away though, cause I've never spoken again to anyone who has gotten the virus and I don't know for sure just how much damage it does. I only know that that person is usually "off-line" for some time afterwards. Good luck everyone! Don't open any attachment that you don't know the sender of and don't know are being sent to you (even if you know the sender is you own mother - SHE may not even know she is sending you something LOL - so be sure it is something you have spoken about and KNOW is being sent.) In defence of the person from whom you received the attachment, it wasn't done on purpose. The virus is automatically send to you as a "reply" to your email, and that virus uses several methods to get you to open it, one of which is to say, "Look to the attachment". The clue that it isn't real it the fact that we, in America, don't say "Look to" we would say "Look at" this virus comes from a non-English speaking country or person. I understand your anger, but changing your email address will not help. If you send email to anyone who has the virus, it will come back to you. I get lots, everyday, and just delete, delete, and go on with life. I am very disappointed that I can't have the atttachment, as I live so far from the library that has it. Julia French Wood

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Final posting on Early Settlers......

    3. I am very sorry to report that I'm unable to send the attachments of the document in neat columns promised to those who asked. I sent two out fine and then got an e-mail from someone on the Bedford list regarding the early settlers which had an attachment containing a virus in it. As the e-mail told me to take a look at the attachment in regards to my posting, it was apparently done on purpose and not one that sneaked in on someone's mailing list. Fortunately, my anti-virus program kicked in when I tried to open it, thinking it was more genealogical information, and denied the "worm" access, but just to be safe I'm really hesitant to send any attachments right now for fear of a hidden virus that would affect your computer. That in addition to the unkind e-mail received from a Campbell lister and the fact that I've been through all this before with another e-mail address and rootsweb postings- my husband absolutely insisted on a new e-mail change which should be effective anytime this day and an end to any type of online genealogy and posting. I'm sorry to say that even in the mild hobby of genealogy there are a few unkind people. So, I guess it's just the old fashioned way of looking in courthouses and libraries for me (which is very enjoyable too)! I hope everyone has good luck in their searches and I caution the Bedford listers not to open any attachments labeled README.TXT with a little .pif at the end. Again, the two I sent out to Rob and John were totally safe as I received the virus after I mailed those. Thanks, Janet

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Re: MADDOX
    2. Very interested in your information on Mary Polly Massie married to a Maddox. I am hoping this is my Charles H. Maddox, born 1805, and that Mary Polly may have been wife #1. Have a lot of information on Charles H, but with wife, Sarah. However, Charles' oldest son, Samuel's death cert shows mother as Mary??? Also have extensive information on Samuel and his family (quite an individual). My great grandmother, Frances, is daughter of Charles H and Sarah. Would love to see your information and share mine. I have elimintated so many Charles H. Maddox's, but the one married to Mary Polly keeps coming back and making more and more sense to me. You can e-mail me at Glynnko@aol.com. Hope to hear from you. Sharon

    3. I see with the first two mails I sent, by the time this list has been copied and pasted several times, the spacing is way off. There are supposed to be two columns of names. I will resend parts one and two trying to adjust the spacing so you can tell the columns apart- but it still won't be perfect short of retyping the whole thing, which I don't have time to do. If anyone would like for me to send them an attachment of the original document neatly typed in columns by Ms. Watson, I'll be happy to do so, but I think most lists frown on attachments so I won't attempt to send to all. 1. [VAAMHERS-L] Early Settlers List
    2. Janet B
    3. Recently, I posted a query about Alexander Brown's list of 3000 early settlers to the Bedford, Nelson, Campbell and Amherst county lists. What a tremendous response I got- mostly off list- wanting to know the location of these papers if I found out. Everyone seems interested in that list! As the Amherst list already knows- a researcher has copied some of the information from those papers which are located at the Swem Library- College of William and Mary. I got so many responses, I'm unable to respond to all of them personally- so a big thank you to those who let me know the location of the papers and those who provided other helpful suggestions on finding them.
