    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Re: Nalley
    2. Dear Irma, Thank you for the lead. Do you have any information that connects Richard, Bennett, William and Joseph as family while in Va(Ky)? The book "The Seven Sons of Abraham and Creasey Nalley" list Richard (b. cir. 1716) as having a brother named Joseph, sons of Dennis(b. cir. 1693), son of John Nall(y). These brohters had an uncle named Joseph and another named William. These uncles were born cir. 1695 in Maryland. The family of Richard is known to have moved into NW Va and then further south, but not all of those that moved out of Maryland were researched as to where they went. Any help appreciated and if you would like a gedcom of Richard's ancestors as transcribed from the book, just let me know. The book has been published at http://www.innerx.net/~pln. Thanks, Paul L. Nally Pine Log, Ga.

    3. Hi Mike, A quick check on the VA library site (Rev War Land Office Military Certificates) shows an ANTHONY PETERS and a THOMAS PETERS (cards 26 and 27 under Penn) who both served on the VA line (unfortunately it does not list the counties they were from). Under Rev War Bounty Warrants they have documents for ANTHONY PETERS, JAMES PETERS, and THOMAS PETERS (cards 72, 73, 74 under Pea). You might want to comb through all the old records at the library's site.. you might find a clue there. Check it out at: http://www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm Best Wishes! 2. The first mention of my gggg grandfather, Zachariah Peters, on a legal document is his nuptial with Keziah Lively, my gggg grandmother, on 18 November 1794. From his wedding date, I have estimated Zachariah's birth at circa 1770-1778. If this is true, then that would place his father at the appropriate age for service in the Revolutionary War. Just a hunch. Does anyone have any information on those of the Peter/Peters surname from VA who served in the 13 Colonies fight for independence. I am especially interested in those from the Amherst/Albemarle area. Thank you in advance for any information or guidance. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Stephen and Mary "MOLLY" Turner
    2. My name is Shanon and my grandmother is a roundtree and murphy daughter. I also have a lot of information on the roundtree and turner line. They are; Susan Turner b. 1784 and married Alexander McKinsey, Nancy Turner married July 25 1804 in Lincoln Co., Ky to Joseph CALVIN, Martha Turner married 1812 to Elisha CALVIN, Mary Turner never married, J..... (maybe James) Turner I know he went to Illinois and later founded the exact place I live with a sqaw wife in Jackson County, Oregon, John D. Co., Va, his wife's name was Dorcas Dudley daughter of Ambrose Dudley jr. I don't have her mothers name though. I also have a lot of stories on these lines and where they tigh into other lines. If anyone wants to share information, please let me know. I'll be happy to share it. I got it all from my late great aunt who just passed away a few days ago. I know she would want me to find the rest of the family and to share it with everyone I can. Please feel free to email me at shansangelwings@lycos.com.

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Re: James DINWIDDIE, b. 7-4-1788, and his father's family, in Amherst Co., Va.
    2. wandajoe
    3. This man, James DINWIDDIE, b. 7-4-1788 (a great birthday date!) is a GxGF of mine. One reliable author (Jane Tyler Craig REICHLEIN, in her book, 'The Samuel GIVENS Family and Kin', pub. 1981) says his father was William DINWIDDIE and his mother was Agnes Unknown. William and Agnes were married in 1787, in Amherst Co., Va. Can anyone tell me the date of this wedding? Can anyone tell me who are the parents of this William DINWIDDIE (in the following generations, there are several William's!!), and the names of his grand-parents?? Jane R. says Agnes may have been a SIMPSON, as one surname, at some point in her life. She is buried in Shelby Co., KY, as the 'Widow Agnes SIMPSON', having died there in 1822. Hopefully, the names of her parents can be found! Who was Mr. SIMPSON? Perhaps a second husband?? The order of her names is: maiden surname not known; DINWIDDIE name possibly first marriage; SIMPSON name possibly second marriage, but not stated with any real certainty, other than the burial reference. Jane R., therefore, indicates much confusion as to this lady's various surnames, and how they actually occurred in her life!! I need help, here!! Two or three family group sheets would help --- one for her father's household (which would provide us with her maiden surname!), one for the DINWIDDIE household, and any others which apply to her!! Even a list of her known children, with dates of birth would be helpful!! James, the son, mentioned in the 'Subject' line, above, was married in Lincoln Co., Ky., on 4-11-1811, and his bride was Jane H. GIVENS. These two later moved to Franklin and/or Winchester Co(?)., TN (or Ky.?)., and, even later, to Greene Co., Tn., where James died 9-8-1841. Jane GIVENS DINWIDDIE died in 1869, and the conclusive place of her death is yet to be found. The GIVENS family of which Jane was a member spent a brief time in Mecklenberg Co., NC, before moving on to Kentucky. 1. Can anyone provide a clue to the facts concerning this William DINWIDDIE's parents? 2. Is the maiden surname of Agnes, his wife, known by anyone?? 3. Does any information exist concerning the implications of the name 'Simpson' in her life?? 4. Are the siblings of James to be found in Amherst Co. records, anywhere? Thank all of you, for looking at this query, and for any answers that you might provide!! Regards. Joe DUKE

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Re: Hartless
    2. Gary, I have noticed your Benjamin & Sofrona Hartless listed on the 1850 census report and I HAVE wondered about him. His age DOES line up more with the Benjamin Hartless whom the "Fare thee Well..." records as marrying a Mary L. Burch. Do you have a date of death for him? I ask, because by 1860 Mary L Hartless lives alone with her children, there is no male head listed in her household (though I guess he COULD be away from home for some reason). Then by 1870 Mary L appears in the household of a 60 year old "Lindsey Hartless" (this would be ABOUT the age Benjamin would be at this time - do you have another given name for Benjamin - was there a Lindsey in his line somewhere? Grasping at straws here :-) If something HAD happened to Sofrona, we would then have to ask what happend to all those children Benjamin & she have listed on the 1850? I think there were about 5, weren't there.? Mary L only has her Leanna, Emily, Henry and Andrew listed with HER. Also, did you notice the OTHER Benjamin listed on that 1850 census report? He lives in the house number right next to Mary L Hartless and her elderly Benjamin. He is 30 years old and lives with a Nancy Hartless age 50. This gets very confusing! Especially when none of the records of the Hartless researchers tfor the Amherst Co., area that I have seen list a Benjamin - more than ONCE. Any more ideas? Thanks so much for responding. PamT

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Re: Hartless
    2. I have made a small step in this query. Mary Jane Hartless born 1848 in Amherst Va was the daughter of Benjamin Hartless (Hartty) and Sofrona Rowsey b 1816. I have seen a copy of the marriage record for Sofrona and Benjamin. They were married Jan 17, 1842. If something happened to Sofrona, there would still be time for him to marry Mary Burch in 1855. If know anything further on Sofrona or Benjamin, let me know. I am still searching for his parents.

While looking for her I came across some Chenaults buried in Amherst Co. Calvin, his wife Mary and daughter Adaline and others. Most of them died in the early 1800's. If you are interested, let me know and I will send you what I know about it. I haven't been able to locate the cemetery, it is remote and grown up but I think it could be found. Susan

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Hartless/Burch marriage
    2. John or Pam
    3. Our Mary Louisa Hartless, the mother of Leanna F. Burch (Beverly), Emily J. Hartless (Smoot), Henry C.Hartless, and Andrew J. Hartless of Amherst Co., VA (as verified by her 1899 will) APPEARS to be the Mary L. Burch who married Benjamin Hartless in 1853 as recorded by many researchers. By the fact that both "Benj & Louisa Hartless" and "Lindsey & Mary (or Louisa) Hartless" are named as the "Parents or Guardian" of the above mentioned children. And the fact that her first daughter, born before her reported marriage to Benjamin Hartless used the name Burch as an adult when no marriage record can be found in Amherst or any of the surrounding counties to support a Burch marriage for her. But WHAT Benjamin Hartless did they Mary Louisa marry? Was her Benjamin born in 1813 or in 1790 as indicated by the 1850 census report. If he WAS born in 1790, where did HE come from, since he does not appear in any of the research done by other Hartless researchers? Perhaps he had another name he went by? AND where did Mary Louisa get the Burch name? Since no other Amherst Co., BURCH researchers have record of HER. Since according to the census reports, she would have been about 30 years old when she married this Benjamin Hartless, did she MARRY into the Burch name? Again, no other Amherst Co., Burch researchers have a marriage similiar to this in their research. Anyone got any comments or clues? PamT

    3. Can anyone tell me if at any time Buena Vista, VA was in Amherst Co.? I understand it is now in Rockbridge County. On my mother's 1934 MD birth certificate my grandmother gave her "residence at birth" as "Buena Vista" in "Amhurst Co., VA". Was Amherst once spelled A M H U R S T? Or was it spelled incorrectly by whomever recorded the info. I wrote to VA's department with birth records inquiring upon my Grandmother's birth certificate dated 1911 and though they charged me $8 to look, they came up with nothing. 1. [VAAMHERS-L] Re: Hartless
    2. WHO ARE ALL THESE AMHERST COUNTY BENJAMIN HARTLESSES? And which one is which? Doesn't the book "Fare thee well ole Joe Clark(e)" name the Benjamin Hartless born in 1813 as the same that married Mary L. Burch in 1853 and then died in 1855? There IS a 28 year old Mary L. Hartless on the 1850 census report who lives with an ELDERLY Benjamin Hartless and has a 4(-6) year old "Leanna F." Would this be the FATHER of the Benjamin born in 1813? And Mary is residing with him while HER Benjamin is off somewhere else? Would then, her 4-6 year old daughter (who is listed AS a Hartless) be the daughter of HER Benjamin - the Benjamin she is not to marry for 3 more years? Mary Louisa Hartless collected pension on the military time of a Benjamin Hartless (her husband) from Amherst Co., VA and even willed this pension money to her youngest son, Henry C. Hartless in her 1899 will. But Henry C. Hartless was not born until AFTER the Benjamin born in 1813 was reported to have DIED and later, Mary Louisa began residing with Lindsey Hartless of Amherst Co., VA So confusing! PamT

    1. [VAAMHERS-L] Re: NEW EMAIL ADDRESS
    2. Debbie, Wouldn't Mary Louisa Hartless's Amherst Co., VA 1899 will prove that she is the mother of Henry C. Hartless? She left everything she owned to him, including any pension moneys (that she was collecting on her husband BENJAMIN HARTLESS'S military time) - and only $1 to Leanna (then Burch, Emily (then Smoot), and Andrew J. Also, weren't the parents of Henry C Hartless listed in the Amherst Co., VA marriage records as Lindsey & Mary (or Louise?) Hartless?
