I did receive a copy of the Early Settlers tithable lists from the 1740s, and if anyone wants a copy please post the request to this forum. I will email you a copy. I have them saved in word format, so it will come as an attachment, I do not have any viruses, so it is safe to open. If I try to paste into the body of the email it will change the format of the list. If you all remember that was the problem they were having trying to post the info to this list. Carrie Bias Hoffert
Dear Janet, I am sending this to the entire list because when I send it to your personal mailing address, it returns as "address unknown." I am sorry about this Rooters! Thank you so much for typing out all of these tithables!! I found several of my ancestors on three of the lists and with your help I now know almost where they very living! Before you posted this information I only knew that they were "of Albemarle County." Now with your help, and that of the Bishop Rose's Diary, I believe they were located in what is now Nelson County. If it is not too much trouble would it be possible for you to send me the attachment that Ms. Watson gave to you? Do you have any other info from these papers? I am eager to go down there to search them myself, but don't know when I can take the time. Thank you so much! I told one of the archivists at the Lib. of VA about these tithing lists and he was amazed!! He had no idea that such a list even existed! Anne Bays (Richmond, Virginia)
I found the marriage of Stephen B. CHENAULT and Lucy T. JOHNSTON on 14 Jan 1837, Amherst Co... VA. I need help in finding more information on Lucy JOHNSTON. Parents Birthdate Date of Death. Lucy and Stephen produced three daughters, Mary, Caroline and Martha Louella. Martha Louella was born in Greenbriar Co. WV in 1843 (or maybe 1844). Lucy apparently died around that time, since Stephen married Esther HEDRICK in 1844. Thanks, Kristi
Would the person looking for Dinwiddie info please contact me direct. I sent and e-mail to wandajoe@m-y.net and it was returned. Becky Fox
Researchers & Historians, I am looking for the basis for these two old songs. They are "Fare Thee Well Ole Joe Clark" and "Old Dan Tucker". I think they must be based on some real people who were prominent in the counties of Rockbridge and/or Amherst. I am not sure of time span, but would say anywhere from the 1850's to 1900, perhaps earlier. Does anyone know enough about local history to tell me about them? Thanks, Phyllis
Regarding the following Hartless marriages, this is additional information for the 2 Rowsey women they married (482) 17 Jan 1842, B. Hartless and S. Rowsey. See Benj. Hartly for more data. ( I could not find a Benj. Hartly listed under the H's. I didn't check to see if there was a listing under S. Rowsey. Could this be an earlier marriage for Benjamin Hartless? According to another posting these would be Benjamin Hartless (Hartty) and Sofrona Rowsey) This is in fact the marriage of Sephony/Sofrona Rowsey to Benjamin Hartless. Sofrona/Sephony Rowsey was the daughter of Archelaus Rowsey and Elizabeth Noell/Newell ( I believe the name is Noell & her father's given name was John from her marriage records) Sofrona was born abt 1816 in Amherst Co. (369) 16 Aug 1841, Jas. Hartless and Martha Rowsey. W: Archie Rowsey. SW: Jas. F. Taliaferro. (481) MR same. Page 9 H This is another daughter of Archelaus & Elizabeth Rowsey (see above parents of Sofrona) I do not have an approximant birth year for her. Neither of these sisters are in my direct lineage. Their brother James is the sibling I descend from, so that is all of the info I can share on the 2 girls. Hope it helps someone. Carrie Bias Hoffert
I have nothing else on either but may have something soon. I'll let you know.
Barb san: Sarah Matthews, wife of James Dolan was a d/o Thomas Matthews who died in 1799. She and James were mar. likely in Buckingham Co. VA about 1783 or so. One of their children, Ann(a) Dolan married Josiah Poston... they had a son, James D. Poston and although I never say the middle name written out, "dollars t' doughnuts" that was James D. Poston [m. Ann Eliza Duncan, d/o Gabriel Duncan and Ascenath Davenport, also from Buckingham Co. VA]. Jack Hockett, Collegeville, PA
All part of my research last week while at the Jones Memorial Library in Lynchburg VA. Hoe it will help some of the Hartless researchers out there. Information obtained from Baily Fulton Davis, Amherst Co., Virginia, Courthouse Miniatures Marriage Data 1801-1854, (Amherst Courthouse, Virginia. 1965). The (numbers) indicates what page of the Marriage Register that Mr. Davis found his information. MR stands for Marriage Returns, a form that the pastor/priest was suppose to file with the courthouse. Sometimes it was filed and other times none were filed. On some of the listing Mr. Davis would list individual first and then the page number on others he would list page number first and than names, I will list page numbers first when available. My comments will Italicized. (496) 18 Sep 1852, Mary L. Burch and Benj. Hartless. (B.H. Senior). Page 24 B. (B.H. Senior refers to Benjamin Hartless Sr. on another page he has the following). There is an incredible well formulated list at the following web address (Rootsweb.com) with EVERY Virginia County, starting with the original shires. I would suggest that you print it, only 4 pages, to be used as a reference in your searches for the correct county names for your ancestral searches. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vagenweb/county2.htm Carrie

I'm looking for information on any early Baptist churches prior to the Revolutionary War in the areas of Pedlars Mill, Tobacco Row or the Forks of the Buffalo River. I am specifically looking for evidence of a church known as Buffaloe Church which met in the home of John Duncan as early as 1743. Any information about this church or others during the mid-1700s or information on John Duncan would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Dave Duncan dduncan@mvnc.edu
