    1. [VAAMHERS] Jim Belcher will share his father's WWII Navy experience as well as his mothers Japanese experience at the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library on Sat Nov 12
    2. Jennifer Thomson
    3. On Saturday November 12th, at 1:30 PM, the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library is proud to host Jim Belcher as he shares the story of his family's experience during World War II, as a child of a Navy Chief Petty Officer and Japanese mother. He authored his father’s chapter in the book, “Only 317 Survived!” and authored several magazine and newspaper articles about his father’s specific ordeal on the USS Indianapolis and his life in general. He will also share his mother’s story of survival during and after WWII along with his father’s, giving a unique two-sided view of WWII. His Japanese grandfather was a victim of the second atomic bomb drop at Nagasaki, and his uncle served in the Imperial Japanese Army from 1938-1945. His mother’s recollections of the war bring many insights and explanations of Japanese perspective to our history lessons. Jim continues to keep his promise to his father and mother…to take care of his father’s shipmates until the last man, and preserve their unique story among the many stories of the USS Indianapolis CA-35. The program will be on the third floor of the Bedford Museum and is free to the public. Please contact the Museum at 540-586-4520 with any questions. -- Thank you, Jennifer Thomson Genealogical Librarian Children's Educational Director Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library 201 E. 1. [VAAMHERS] Local author Rodney Franklin will be speaking at the Bedford Museum on Saturday July 9 about his life and his 20+ years in the military (from Korean War to the Vietnam War)
    2. Jennifer Thomson via
    3. "Trying to describe Montvale Native and Moneta resident Rodney Franklin is like trying to stuff the Pacific Ocean into a teacup. If you call him a plumber's helper, you're on the mark. He once was. If you call him a sailor, again, you're right. You'd also be correct if you refer to him an an airman (his 21 years of active military service spans both the Korean and Vietnam wars), high school teacher, Moose Lodge administrator, babysitter, or writer. No, he is not superman, and he is not 130 years old. He is however, a youthful octogenarian who still beats golf balls and on the guitar. Rodney will reflect on his life and look ahead on Saturday July 9th at 1:30 PM at the Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library. At times, he is blunt, at times tactful, but always speaks of his love for America and the opportunities we have that many other countries don't have. He is first, last and always a patriot. His philosophy is you're not beaten until you give up. He says "Each day's sunrise is a blessing, each sunset another." The presentation will be on the third floor of the Museum and there is an elevator and plenty of parking available. Please contact the Bedford Museum at 540-586-4520 with any questions." -- Thank you, Jennifer Thomson Genealogical Librarian Children's Educational Director Bedford Museum & Genealogical Library 201 E.
