HOWDY Louri. Do you remember what road you traveled to where these Head stones were & were there any other Stones even Field stones? I have many Connections in Amherst County. THANKS. A T & Leona < [email protected]>
I will be interested to know if anyone can identify this John M. Sandidge (1852 - 1934) and his wife Ella whose tombstones were recently posted. I would also be interested in having more info about where they were buried. Sandy Rowe

Found two headstones in the earth; one for J M Sandidge, b 1852, d 1934; the other for Ella Sandidge, wife of John M, b 1854, d 1898. Hopefully someone will be able to use this information. FYI, they are buried on some beautiful country, on an overlook, looking towards the Blue Ridge Mountains. Unfortunately I did not get photos.
Printer-Friendly Version 'Jotting' leads to book of 'Memories' Aaron Lee New Era Progress Wednesday, February 1, 2006 Four years ago Velma Mays White’s story of the Cashes and the Mayses were loose notes, musings and nothing concrete … at least on paper. Today, White’s tale of two families bound to the story of Nelson and Amherst counties has become the 81-year-old’s first published work. “Fondest Memories,” White’s account of a childhood in rural Depression-era America, encompasses poetry, seven generations of photos, ancestral lineage and family recipes. “My health was going bad and I started jotting down things that we had done,” White said of the book in its infancy. It was White’s daughter, Judith Hoyle, who discovered the “jotting” her mother was doing. She was the one who saw the potential for a book. “She said, ‘Momma, this is really good, keep on writing,’” White recalled. From there, White began on the project in earnest by soliciting memories and ideas from what she estimates are two families with roughly 500 descendants alive in Central Virginia. “I told them at the reunion that if they didn’t tell me things to write then I was going to write all the bad things they did,” White joked. The mountainous farmland of Amherst County is where White’s life began. Her mother, a Cash, and her father, a Mays, grew up as neighbors in Mt. Pleasant and married. One of nine children, White said she grew up in a “drafty” log cabin surrounded by the 365 acres her family used to produce almost all the necessities of life. As she got older, however, she said she realized one important thing. “Everybody up there (Mt. Pleasant) was related to us,” she said. “So when I went to high school I thought I’d end up marrying a cousin.” The thought was the motivation that moved her to Newport News shortly after graduation from Temperance High School. It was after getting a job in a shipyard in Newport News that one of White’s friends set her up on a blind date. She was reluctant and asked what the guy looked like. She got teased. “He’s real cute and bald headed,” the friend said. White took that as a joke. When the date showed up, he introduced himself as Claude White. And, as “any true gentlemen,” White writes, off came the hat. “Oh, you are bald headed,” White remembers saying. “I am very sorry about that Miss Mays, but that is something I cannot do anything about,” the 24 year-old man shot back. Six months later Velma Mays became Velma Mays White. They were married for 59 years until Claude died in the summer of 2004. That story is in “Memories,” along with the one of her father’s first car and how the splinter in her posterior (that’s been there most of her life) lodged in after a fall onto a wooden floor. White’s stories are “amusing” as her daughter Pam Hamilton (who White now lives with in Petersburg) puts it. “She’s always told stories, but this is the first thing she’s written,” Hamilton said. But it’s far from the whole story, and White knows that. With only 400 copies in print, “Memories” isn’t likely to be read much outside her large family, either. But White’s hope is that family will read it and enjoy the stories she’s written, enough to write down their own. Beginning with Chapter 12, “Memories’” goes blank for 10 pages of ruled paper. It’s the place in the book where White turns the story over. Questions, comments, story ideas? In 1850 census shown in Eastern District as follows: Willis Gillaspie, age 60 Harriet, age 58 Sally, age 27 James, age 26 Mildred, age 22 (married William Sidney Camden) Wiatt, age 21 (died during civil war) Clary, age 18 Sally and Clara never married and are shown in later census records in the household of their sister, Mildred Camden. Also believe that Willis and Harriet are the parents of William Gillaspie who married Elizabeth Franklin in Amherst 26 March 1846, who moved to Bedford County. They were the parents of Harriet A. Gillaspie who married William T. Perkins and inherited the Camden homeplace on Jack's Hill in Nelson County. Can anyone tell me who the parents of Willis Gillaspie were and what was his relationship to Dicey Gillaspie who married Jesse Wright?? Thanks in advance for any help, Sylvia

I have looked for this deed but haven't been able to find it. I have a copy of Mildred Camden's will that states that the property was to go to her niece Harriet A. Gillaspie Perkins and her husband William T. Perkins. They lived on Jack's Hill and if I remember correctly their son Rayburn Perkins lived there until his death. I haven't found anything that indicates that a Joseph Perkins owned this land. Thanks for your help, Sylvia

Doug, I check the histories that I have on file and Rev. Conrad's name was not listed by any of "my" churches. He could have pastored one of them however their historians did not put his name in their records when they were written in 1974. I'm sorry I can not help you with this. Bonnie. <><

Pretty much have the body of the Bond done but have no clue as to the signature of the Clerk. Anyone know who the County Clerk was at that time in Amherst's history? Broader Question-does anyone know if there is a list anyplace for the clerks of the various Va counties? I am facing this same issue in Botetourt, Craig, Prince Edward and Appomattox. Thanks Doug
Thank you all for the quick response. We will be back in the area in April hoping to do some more family research. Doug Burnett

Conrad. He was born in Canada. He is listed on censuses from 1880 to 1930 in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. If you do a web search of his name(with and without the middle initial) will give you at least two weddings he performed. Hope your Baptist correspondent can help you with this name and other Baptist ministers. I suggest that you try the Library of Virginia website as well. http://www.lva.lib.va.us/
