    3. Sure, there's nothing wrong with discussing the Civil War in general. This just isn't the list for it. People join this is list specifically to discuss Amherst County history and genealogy. Obviously, the Civil War had some impact on the region and is going to factor into discussions with that aspect in mind, but let's try not to let broader subjects overtake the list. For certain, discussions on modern day controversial subjects such as flying the Confederate flag would be against the policies of the Rootsweb service. We want to keep this a friendly place of research and discussion for those interested in the topic of this list. Thanks Joe D. And we cannot ignore the Civil War or its ramifications. BTW: A.T.'s CSA veteran ancestors are mine, too. Most were poor as churchmice and, so far, we have not found one who owned slaves.

    3. Ann, you are right on the mark. ALL of my ancestors were in Virginia and PA by the mid 1600's (actually 1635 was the first date) and very early 1700's. I am very proud of what they did to insure you and me of the life we now live. And the heritage we can call our own by freeing us from British rule. We fought each other in the Revolutionary War too. We fought the British and our neighbors who took their allegiance to the King of England very seriously. They were called "Loyalists" but they were Americans. Enough said about the Civil War where Fathers fought their sons and cousins fought cousins and I could go on forever. It was a really Crummy and Stupid war for "States Rights" not entirely for or against slavery. Slavery was the excuse they used. Thanks CUZ and Ann and all the rest who have contributed to this conversation. 3. Allow displays of battle flags By Ann Coulter There are a few points to be made in defense of the Confederate flag. Despite grandiose revisionist history written by the victors, the Civil War was not exclusively about slavery: It was about saving the Union. President Lincoln wrote to the editor of the New York Tribune in August 1862: "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that." Indeed, Lincoln didn't even issue the Emancipation Proclamation until well into the Civil War, largely as a war tactic. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee opposed slavery and had freed his slaves long before Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Lee's men followed him, often hungry and barefoot, because the South was their home - not because they held a brief for slavery. The battle flag never flew over a Confederate building: It was truly a battle flag. Symbols of slavery! ? The American flag or native African kente cloth could more plausibly be said to symbolize slavery than the Confederate battle flag. Slavery was legal under the Stars and Stripes for more than 70 years, far longer than under any of the Confederate flags. Moreover, it is a historical fact that American slaves were purchased from their slave masters in Africa, where slavery exists to this day. Indeed, slavery is the only African institution America has ever adopted. But while some Americans express pride in their ancestors, even though some of them were slave traders, by calling themselves "African-Americans," pride in Confederate relatives is deemed a virtual hate crime. Yet this country's heroic annals are shot through with Southerners - Southerners that former Navy secretary James Webb describes as whispering "and for the South" when pledging their duty to America. It is the South's pride in its valiant military history that the battle flag represents. In his World War II ! account, Citizen Soldiers, Stephen E. Ambrose recalls the amazing feats of Lt. Waverly Wray from Batesville, Miss. With his "Deep South religious convictions," Wray's worst curse was to exclaim "John Brown!" referring to the abolitionist who helped spark the Civil War. One time, Wray single-handedly killed eight German officers by sneaking up on them "like the deer stalker he was." As Ambrose says: "You don't get more than one Wray to a division, or even to an army." There was one like him in World War I, Ambrose reports - "also a Southern boy." Southern bravery This is a shared cultural ethic among all Southerners. Five black marines were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for mind-boggling acts of heroism that protected their comrades in Vietnam. Three of the five were from the South. The disproportionate number of blacks in the military is a reflection of the disproportionate number of Southerners in the military. Retired Army general Colin Powell concluded there is ! no impediment to a black person being elected president, noting that he received his strongest support to run for president from white Southerners. Slavery is an ugly chapter in this nation's history, but it was not unique to this country, and it was not unique to the South. It is its own kind of bigotry to condemn respectful displays of the Confederate battle flag

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Morrison, Higginbotham Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BAC.2ACE/1346 Message Board Post: I found William Morrison and Thomas Morrison Jr.'s names in Albemarle in 1739 and 1756. Is this the William who died in 1761? Amherst County has about five wills on Morrison family. I have not found them quoted. Are additional family names mentioned in the wills? My brick wall is William Morrison who arrived in Hickman Co., TN with Burris (Bunis) Warren about 1820. Warren notes say he was born in Amherst Co. William Morrison was born in Virginia in 1766. I read the Higginbotham/Morrison relationship in "William and Mary". William Higginbotham, son of Benjamin Higginbotham, came to Perry Co., TN from Elbert Co., GA. Perry Co is next to Hickman Co. Does anyone know Patrick Morrison? He signed a deed in Albemarle in 1751 and is mentioned in "Alexander Brown's Early Settlers List". Is he the Patrick who came To America with his brother James and his cousin, George? George died at King's Mt. if the notes I read were correct. It further said that Patrick had sons James, David, John and William. A little was known about each son except William. The notes said William went to Middle Tennessee and descendants were not known. The other Patrick married Ann Foster, fought in the Revolution and was from Rowan Co., NC. Any information or clues will be appreciated. Thank you. Linda

    2. HEY CUZ, WHAT ever may be thought or said about the Confederate Veterans comes under free speech Rights. BUT Mr. OR MS. Nonthinker, When Officialdom makes the statement that, IF this offends any one WE will remove it, NOW just think, IF it offends ANY one, Officialdom has just relegated those that are connected to the Words that are being Removed to a NON person, THAT is just what I am ticked off at, Being considered a NO ONE WHEN I believe that EVERY ONE should be permitted to HONOR their Heritage. BEING from European Ancestry, I had several of my Migrant & Less fortunate Ancestors who were at one time in their Life Indentured, ?. Slaves & not persons of Color. SO why should I not vent my disgust with Official ACTS that insult me & the many descendants of Confederate Veterans.
