I've been trying to locate Vera Rowe Sumansky's research work. I had been told her husband might have it, and just found out he died last year (?), according to Fay Stone. Fay Stone & I have been exchanging information this past week, & she has corrected some of the information I posted earlier. As soon as I get my own records updated, I'll let you know the corrections as well, although I think Fay may update it for me. I am getting really excited about finding all these new connections, especially all the answers to questions I have been asking for years! I've thought of joining the HFA before, but haven't been in the position of affording the dues yet. I also speculated about Ruth Whitecotton being of native american birth, due to her name. I've always wondered if the Hudson name could have been passed down through Henry Hudson's son, John. According to a biography I had read, Henry & John were set adrift on the west side of Hudson Bay. Many of the indian tribes used to adopt white children into their tribes, as well as some adults. Since their bodies were never recovered, & there were no graves, there's a good possibility that at least 1 of them may have survived & passed down the Hudson name through marriage to a native american, although most of the tribes use the maternal lineage system instead of paternal. I have been wondering for years now how the Choctaw chief, George Hudson, obtained his name. He was living in MO during the Civil War years, about the same time my gr. grandfather George R./W. Hudson was there. I know many indians took on the names of the white people who befriended them also. And then ther! e are all the Hudsons who came from England, also related to Henry Hudson. I know there are some Hudsons (some with the same names as George R. Hudson's relations) on the Cherokee rolls. So there are many ways that the Hudson name could be spread throughout the United States. Anyways, I will try to get my own info updated ASAP & let you know the changes! Thanks for all your help!

    1. Behethland Taliaferro of Nelson Co VA
    2. Lilly Martin
    3. Hello, This is my first posting here on this mailing list of my ancestry of Behethland Taliaferro, of Nelson Co VA. I have been given 2 conflicting ancestral lines for her, so I will list each of the 2 reports, and ask for some advice or guidance as to which version is correct. #1. Behethland Taliaferro b. 5-20-1738 Caroline Co., VA., she married James Stevens, she died 4-4-1828 Nelson Co VA. She is the daughter of Capt. Richard Taliaferro b. about 1703, s/o John, s/o Robert the Immigrant. #2. Behethland Taiaferro b. 5-20-1738 Caroline Co VA, d/o Capt. Richard Taliaferro, s/o Zachariah, s/o Francis, s/o Robert the Immigrant. Which of these 2 versions is correct? Capt. Richard Taliaferro was married to Rose Berryman. I have gathered alot of Taliaferro genealogy from various sources, but I have never attempted to verify the correct pedigree for my ancestor Behethland Taliaferro. Nelson Co VA is next door to Amherst Co VA, and Capt. Richard Taliaferro is said to have owned 10,000 acres of land at Amherst Co VA. My descendancy is as follows: I am Lilly, d/o Joe, s/o Etta, d/o Susie Jane Campbell, d/o Nancy Jane Campbell of Temperance, Amherst Co VA,. d/o Behethland Thompson of Temperance , Amherst Co VA, d/o James Thompson III, of Temperance , Amherst Co VA, s/o Elizabeth Stevens, d/o Behethland Taliaferro of Nelson Co VA, d/o Capt. Richard Taliferro and Rose Berryman, of Amherst Co VA. All help and guidance is appreciated. Best regards, Lilly Martin

Very passed away sometime before 1998. Vera was a daughter of Rushton M. ROWE and Orbie Brigette (HUDSON) ROWE. At that time Vera had the marriage record for Jacob and Ruth showing "Sept.17,1817", and she knew that her gr-gr-grandmother, Ruth WHITECOTTON, was born Sept.12, 1793, in Bull's Gap, Hawkins Co, TN, about 100 miles northeast of Knoxville, TN just off I-81. That area of Tennessee was heavily inhabited by Cherokee Indians, and from the sound of Ruth's family name, it would not surprise me if she was at least part Cherokee.Indian, but that is my speculation only. We have no other HUDSONs associated with Hawkins Co, or else I might have another clue to follow. Mrs.SUMANKSY (Vera) only knew that Jacob had come from Maryland and was born ca.1795. I would like very much to be able to go back earlier in Jacob's lineage, but there were several hundred HUDSONs all over the state of Maryland at that period. I suspect that Jacob was one of the folks who simply wanted to "move west", raise a family and settle. Hopefully we might be able to run across another descendant who may have more complete information about Jacob. Again, thank you for your valuable help on this HUDSON line. Regards, John W. I wasn't sure where Clifford & Turkey Mt. were when I contacted you. Now I know. As you can tell from the info I gave you, there's a conflict of information as to where Jacob and Ruth Whitecotton are actually from. I even have one report stating Jacob was from Kentucky, not Ohio or Maryland. I remember coming across a Jacob Hudson who died in IN, about the right age for my ancestor. It might possibly explain why the younger children list the place of birth of their father differently from their older siblings. Maybe Ruth Whitecotton had remarried to another Hudson. Or maybe the younger children were not actually Jacob & Ruth's children. Maybe they were nephews & nieces. It seems there's a pattern in our line of Hudsons to take in other relations. I know that Corda took in her daughter's ( Lauvana), kids when she died, at least for a little while. I think Sarah "Emma" might have taken in Sampson's & Augusta's younger chi! ldren when Augusta died. I know my father stayed with an aunt & uncle when he first left home. It seems to have been a common practice back in those days, along with the same families intermarrying (i.e., brother & sister marrying another set of brother & sister). How sure are you that Jacob was from Maryland? And that he married Ruth Whitecotton? Earlier reports by Tara Painter and Richard Heckelsberg mentioned that he might have been married to Ruth Whitecox (?) instead of Ruth Whitecotton. Do you know of any indian heritage among Jacob's descendants/ancestors? Or Ruth Whitecotton's?

Almost all of the HUDSONs in Amherst Co, VA, descend from Joshua HUDSON and Elizabeth Rush of Westmoreland Co, VA. Joshua HUDSON died 1704 in Westmoreland Co, VA leaving land and a will that clearly deliniates his eight children, some whom removed south in Virginia to Culpeper Co and Orange Co, and later (further south) into Amherst county where Joshua HUDSON's grandson, (also Joshua) purchased land in 1769. They both have backed up their info with various documents, but like most official documentation. much of the information given is conflicting. So here goes: Jacob Hudson: dob- about 1790 (both TP & RH), plob: in MD or OH(TP) spouse: Ruth Whitecotton (both) dob: 12 Sep 1793, plob: TN (both) or VA (TP) censuses for 1 child states TN while 3 other children state VA. They had a son, James Riley Hudson b. 15 May 1849 in Greenfield, Hancock Co., IN. Sarah died on 11 AUG 1850 in Greenfield, Hancock Co., IN. FEB 1872 in Brazil, Clay Co., IN all the above info comes from Tara Painter's resources I have done some research of my own & can provide some more info on some of the above, such as Rosina. George died either 22 DEC 1888 (TP) or 23 DEC 1888 (RH) in Montgomery City, Montgomery CO, MO & is buried in a cemetary there. Elendar died 14 OCT 1907 in Brazil, Clay Co. IN & is buried in the Baptist Moses cemetery in Seelyville, Vigo Co., IN. Sampson Benonine Hudson married Augusta M. Hoselton abt 1885 (according to 1900 Nevins census, which has some errors in it, such as having Orbie listed as a son). There's a conflict of information regarding Augusta & her ancestry. Tara's sources say that her name was Mary Augustine "Augusta" Hoselton, b. JAN 1869 in Benton City, Scott Co., MO. She has Augusta's parents as Arthur Hoselton and Florence Cather. Richard has her as being Augusta Mary Hoselton, b. 10 Jan 1869 in Benton City, Scott Co., MO with her parents being Amos Hoselton and Isabella Shrout. Another relative says her name was Augusta Goforth. Her gravestone says her name is Augusta M. Hudson 1870-1907. Sampson, Augusta, Elendar and an "Elva" Hudson are buried together in Baptist Moses Cemetery, in Seelyville, Vigo Co. , IN (between Terre Haute & Brazil). Sampson & Augusta had: 1) Hershel Hudson, b. abt. 1885. died abt 1887 (RH) Tara doesn't mention him in her reports. 2) James "Jim" Hudson b. John's widow, Martha Jane Jones (1801-1869) married second Patterson Jennings on April 17, 1826. They were a Campbell County (VA) family. The title of my book is Waltons of Old Virginia and Sketches of Families in Central Virginia. Would like to find family books on the above families, I just purchased "Fondest Memories" a well written book by Velma Mays White for $35. I will use for reference as time goes by. Haven't found a kin in it yet but who knows what tomorrow will bring? Many thanks in advance. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Hudson/Hoselton/Mitchell/Stonebraker(Stonebreaker) Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BAC.2ACE/1029.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks! I'd love to share info with you! It sounds like the same George & Ellendar Hudson. I am related to the Carol Taylor that has been posting on the message boards, as distant cousins. It seems strange to be getting help from you, because one of my brothers is John W. Hudson, SR.. There's now 3 John Wayne Hudsons in our family tree.
