    2. You might try looking in Albemarle Co for your Stephens family; Amherst Co was not established until 1761 (out of Albemarle) so your Phillip couldn't have been born in Amherst in ca 1755, except of course in the physical location. In turn, Albemarle Co came from Goochland Co and Lousia Co in 1744. Records remained in the 'old' county and the 'new' records began in the year a county was established. Hope this helps. Good luck, Aileen in Wa

    3. I only have 2 days, Fri & Sat in Amherst County for research, my question is; Which of the following should I start in on Saturday. The Jones Memorial Library or the Amherst County Museum. Which is going to have the larger collection of Genealogical info? Friday I am driving in and need to go to the courthouse...that will take me a good part of the day. THANKS TO EVERYONE that responded to my St. Marks Church Question, my Hotel Question, and my Pedlar River Questions. You were each and everyone amazing. I have the names of old cemeteries w/locations. I will stay in Lynchburg....I used to stay there on business years ago. And I am going to visit St. Marks Church for a photo. In the meantime I have links you all generously sent and will try to do as much before I come as possible. So each of you have been terrific. I am really looking forward to me trip as a result of all of the info and assistance you have supplied. For the lady requesting records for St. Marks Subscription, I will send you an original copy of what ever I find while in Amherst regarding the church. Also I do have reference material of the subscription and am sending that to you as well. THANK YOU ALL! Wonderful people/researchers out there in Amherst Co, VA. Carrie Bias Hoffert

    3. Can anyone tell me where the following are located, these locations deal with land grants for my Byas/Bias 4th & 5th Grandfathers, back in the early formation of Amherst County VA. South Fork of Huffs Creek. Dancing and Otters Creek Pedlar River and Comfield Branch I am not looking for exact locations, just a general idea, so that I might go to the area/areas while I am there, just to stand in respect for my ancestors. I assume they will be fairly close in proximity to one another....James Byass, father and Larkin Byas/Bias, son owned the lands. This will be all of my questions for awhile, again THANKS! Oops, just one more, are there any really old cemeteries (1700s burials) in the Amherst area? Thanks, Carrie Bias Hoffert

    3. Is St Marks Church still in existence? I am going to Amherst for research and would love to go see St. Marks Church. My 6th Great Grandfather, James Rowsey subscribed to the building fund for renovations on 3 Nov 1788. So you may understand my desire to see the church if it is still standing, I know it was renovated in the early 1800s. Can anyone tell me how far it is to Cabellsburg and the St Marks Church, from Amherst, VA. Thanks to all, Carrie Bias Hoffert researching the following from Amherst County, VA; Burden, Byas/Bias, Harrison, Lunsford, Noel/Nowell, Pain, Peyton, Rowsey, Vest/Vess & Wray/Ray, all from the early 1700s to mid 1800s.

    3. Hi I am hoping that one of the list members could suggest a hotel or motel I could stay in that would accommodate research in the area. I would prefer to stay close to both or either the County courthouse and/or the Amherst County Museum and Historical Society. This is my first trip to your lovely area....really looking forward to a couple of days of research time there. I am going to be there for only one night on my way back to NC and do not know the area at all. Suggestions with phone numbers would be most welcome. Clean, comfortable and inexpensive is all I am looking for. THANK YOU, Carrie Bias Hoffert
