    1. Re: [VAAMHERS] Research in Amherst County
    2. Lynden Harris
    3. Marlene; Don't forget that just prior to turning off "main Street" in Amherst to go to the court house, and on the north end of Amherst is the Amherst County Historical Society. This facility contains significant historical documents, family histories, maps, etc, that you will find at no other location. (The Society is closed on Monday's!!!) At the Amherst County library, check the Rev. Bailey Davis books ( 3 of them) that detail and synopsized the legal documents contained in the court houses of Albemarle, Nelson and Amherst Counties. The quickest and easiest way to start research of the records of these counties to at least refer you directly to the original document housed in these court houses. If you are interested in the Amherst county Indian tribe, the Monican Indian, and its history; turn west as you approach the library and go about 5 miles to the Monican Indian Museum and burial grounds. Be sure to ask for a copy of the marriage roster from 1700 to the present for the intermarriage of the American Native Indian to the White Man/Woman. This can and may validate your heritage with the American Indian clan of Amherst County. You may want to start by concentrating on either Matthew or John Ricketts as both fought in the Revolutionary war from Amherst County. Also, a Thomas Ricketts shows up in Amherst County as well. Thomas Ricketts b Va & d 1865 in Grundy Co - his wife Lucy Taylor b 1796 in Cumberland Co., Va. & died 1865 - buried in the Wooley Cem. They lived in Amherst Co., Va. - 1820-40. But most of all enjoy your visit in this, one of the most historical counties of our beautiful state of Virginia. 2. David Attride
    3. Does anyone on this list have access to early Amherst marriage records? I am researching Nicholas CRESS who married Elizabeth Summers (or Somers) in the period 1784 to 1788. He lived in adjacent Rockbridge County and obtained property in Amherst Co. in 1795. I have looked for his marriage in Rockbridge & Augusta counties and did not find it. I do not have access to Amherst Co. marriage records. I would be obliged if someone on this list could check for his marriage. Thanks! 3. There were apparently more than one Edward Ware on Virginia during the colonial years. Edward Ware received 10 land grants from 1703 through 1808 - mostly in Essex County but an Edward Ware obtained 5 patent land grants in Amherst County between 1763 and 1780 for a total of 1,175 acres - mainly on Horsley's Creek and Tobacco Row Mountain. I did not look up Clarkson or Young but you can find out about them from the Virginia State Library land records in Richmond.
