    1. [VAAMHERS] RE-THIS IS NOT AL THAT IS AVAILABLE BUT IT GIVES REASON TO BE CONCERNED

Seem that it should concern many people. JUST think, 80,000 X 26 = 2,80,000 The 26 is the Descendants from the Man that I previously Mentioned. I do believe that this should be of Genealogical Concern. CUZ A T Powell, <[email protected]> > COUSIN A T <[email protected]>

    1. [VAAMHERS] RE-CUZ PAT & JACK & OTHER COUSINS WOULD RATHER FORGET
    2. Thanks for the information. I do think it is a shame that the whole story of the colony is not known to most people. When I saw the film I was almost ashamed to admit I was from Lynchburg. I know people who still work there, and frankly, I don't think the treatment and concern for the clients there has changed much over the years. <NAME IS AVAILABLE> You see Cousins, You forgot to <ASK & ANSWER QUESTIONS SOMEONE KNOWS> I surely hope that your Family missed this Terrible BIT of Reality, nut every family was not so fortunate. OH but it did affect many families. THE ostrich mind set just does not apply. THE simple Minded BLOG bit is the same sweep under the RUG Idea that Our Churches & Officialdom have had for, too many years. <NO> Well why has there been no condemnation of this inhuman, Official Policy, Yes I know Someone took it to Court, but the things that are best taken to the grave, well, this is not one of those thing's. NOW just how can one say that this sordid bit of our past has not had any effect on any ones genealogy. A T Powell <[email protected]>

    1. [VAAMHERS] RE-THERE HAS BEEN QUESTION OF HOW THIS COULD HAVE HAD ANY <BELOW>
    2. The Virginia eugenic sterilization law was challenged in the Supreme Court on the grounds that it violated the principle of equal protection since it applied only to institutionalized persons. Oliver Wendell Holmes spoke directly to this concern in Buck v. Bell. Holmes pointed out that the Virginia compulsory sterilization law sought to sterilize all persons with hereditary defects, not just those institutionalized. It did not violate the equal protection clause because "the law does all that is needed when it does all that it can." The law, he said, clearly sought to bring all "similarly situated so far and so fast as its means allow" under its jurisdiction.(15) The Commonwealth of Virginia aimed to sterilize only those who could "be safely discharged or paroled and become self-supporting with benefit to themselves and to society." Carrie Buck was institutionalized only after she became pregnant. She was released immediately after she was sterilized. Her sister, Doris Buck, was brought to the state colony specifically to be sterilized and was released immediately after her sterilization. It was clear that the provision in the law to sterilize institutionalized persons was not meant to restrict the population, of those to be sterilized.(16) American Support for Eugenics Does this have any Effect on our Genealogy, WELL COUSINS I know for a fact there are 26 Descendants from a man that missed Sterilization, By a Bit Of Concern By the Family Dr. There are 26 Descendants from that Man; There were 3 Mother's 9 Children, 10 Grand Children, 1 Father, 2 Sons, & 2 Grand Son's THIS Happened in 1940 & UP until now. This Has A Great deal to do with the Genealogy of This Family & will for years to come. NOW please; JUST who of My many Cousins, is it that knows that there has never been, no such thing to happen in any of the rest of our PAST Families? This is up to now 26 Relitives______ That would have never existed________IF THAT unnecessary Sterilization had Taken place, SO you see Cousins, When the Blank can be filled in, the unknown Past <DOES LOOK SO MUCH DIFFERENT> Hey I am not shouting, Life just looks so much different without wonder??? Please Comment. A T <[email protected]>

    2. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions for my recent trip to Amherst. The Historical Museum was terrific and the people so nice. The library in Lynchburg was very helpful, also. I am afraid I did not find my ancestor, John Henry Ricketts, but I will keep plugging away! Thanks so much for all the tips - it is a lovely area of VA., especially this time of year. 1. [VAAMHERS] RE- IF WE FIND ONE OF THESE SKELITONS
    2. I read the site about Virginia Training School. But in none of the things said about it, was it mentioned that the early days of Virginia Trainig School's sterilization program was the pattern by which Adolph Hitler copied for his making of the "Master Race".  There was a film made about this and shown on TV a number of years ago. I was born and grew up in Lynchburg, and was very surprised to hear that Hitler was invited to visit, did so, and adopted the plan for his own use. Does anyone know all the facts and truth about this situation who could enlighten us about what occurred? Tina THIS Black shadow is real. IT will touch some family genealogy. AS it has been swept under the RUG for oh so many YEARS. I just hope IF it ever shows up in any way Connected, Being as it ended in 1972 Hopefully it can be dealt with, not as a Dancing Skeleton, But be Fazed in to our Research, with some kind of <acceptable> understanding, COUSINS it was real & most revolting when Thoroughly understood for just what it was. The Mental Problem was the Manner that was used in a Mindless Approach to the Solution of a problem that did not exist. Hitler decided that the Gas Chamber was Faster. COUSIN'S, you may not equate this with Genealogy BUT it is a fact of life That came closer to more Americans than Most of us realize. Because Va, was not the ONLY State to practice this disregard for the human being. If one has a problem believing this, Please E-MAIL Me I will give you a Posting of the Name of the States that Practiced RACE cleansing. CUZ A T <[email protected]>

    3. There is a video called "The Lynchburg Story" that may be the program you're talking about. The blurb from the cover is: This film charts the history of the American eugenics program under which 80,000 inmates in state institutions have been compulsorily sterilized. In Virginia between 1905 and 1972, several thousand children deemed by the state as unfit to reproduce were taken from their families and forced to live in the Lynchburg Colony. Victims recall their experiences of beatings, solitary confinement and other abuses. The film was made in 1993 and can be checked out from the Virginia Tech library in Blacksburg, VA or probably requested through Interlibrary Loan from a number of other schools. 2. I saw your notes and that you had Tomlin's in your family. I am very interested in them. So I am looking for any Tomlin's that perhaps married into the Waller or Rowzie family.
