I would love to have any information you might have. Also, do you have birth dates for John S and Sally Grubbs Farrar? The notes I found say John S was born in 1740 and died 1833, which would make him 93 -- a very old age! I have no birth or death dates for Sally. I think you mentioned also that Mathew Grubbs Farrar had a brother named John S. The notes I found indicated siblings Richard L, Elizabeth F., Martha G, Marcellus, Sarah, Sophia G, Susan R, and Lavinia or Louvinia, but no John. Are my notes incorrect? Adding to the confusion, I had notes that Col. John S. Farrar, Mathew Grubb Farrar's father, was born to Richard Farrar and Susan Shelton in 1740, but that Richard Farrar was born in Aug 1748 (not likely!) and Susan was born in 1720 (28 years older than her husband, Richard?). You see how confused I am! Finally, most of the records I have for my great- grandfather have his name spelled with only one T in Mathew...should it be Mathew or Matthew? Oh, and! do you see any reference to family surnames McCauley and Jennings? I find that Mathew's two oldest daughters had these unusual middle names (Mathew's wife's surname was Whitten, so that's not the source). Thanks. 1. [VAAMHERS] MAYBE NOT GENEALOGY< BUT COULD BE THE CAUSE MANY BRICK WALLS <CUZ A T
    2. I do not want to pick a fight. I live far away from Virginia and only visit there when I can afford to travel and when every one in the household is in good health, but that is not the case these days. However, at a genealogical conference in Richmond some years ago, one of the now-retired archivists at the Library of Virginia explained the disappearance of some of the records, say, of Hanover Co., a critical county in my research. When the Confederates were surrounded at Richmond toward the end of the Civil War, they set the wharves on the James River afire. As fires are wont do to, this one [or these ones] got out of control and burned the archives at Richmond, and among the holdings were Hanover Co. records!!! I cannot speak about other Virginia counties. Sometimes, the official papers seem to reappear!!! I have a recently published book of Fauquier Co. tithables wherein someone in the courthouse discovered a long-covered-up booklet of such lists. As one noted lecturer-genealogist-editor explains in her lectures, The papers we genealogists want are usually in the basement or the attic of some unknown repository!!! Wear old clothes to the courthouse, she cautions. Another lecturer tells of prying people [genealogists] finding official records tossed out by clerks who need more storage room. Having visited courthouses across the nation, I can understand the need for more storage. Having lived near wild fires for about 30 years [I have since moved] and understanding how fast they move and destroy, this explanation bout the Richmond fires sounds plausible to me. Many a time I have packed a car with some goods and papers and been told by the Sheriff to evacuate!!! If one listens or reads unbiased historians, they, like social scientists, recognize that all humans have good and bad faults. Some of us are tilted one way or the other in many cases. 2. It is amazing how history is soon forgotten.King Willian County and adjacent "counties " at this time period , still had Native Americans , who thaught the land was thiers. Not all were killed. The Rappahanock tribe managed to live and hide for four hundred years. The Pamunkey are still there today. The survivors never left. It was on Abraham Lincoln's orders that most court houses along with the records were destroyed.Yet today we Americans are to believe that Abraham Lincoln was a "good man"</HTML>
