Posted on: Amelia County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Va/Amelia/462 Surname: CARTER ------------------------- I have come across some family papers that list my g-g-grandfather, William R. Carter of Amelia County, Virginia (1809 - 1886), as "Jr." or "Junior." I know for a fact that William's father was John Carter (1775 - 1852). John Carter moved to Amelia County between 1810 and 1820 according to the Censuses of the time; however, he was doing business in Amelia as early as 1803. He is listed on one document as "John Carter of the County of Cumberland." However, he is neither listed in Amelia or Cumberland on the 1810 Census. There does appear a John Carter on the 1810 Census in Prince Edward County who fits John's description very well. Since William R. Carter is listed as "William R. Carter JR.," and his father was NOT named William, this leads me to believe that perhaps John's father, William R.'s grandfather, was named William. There IS a William Carter Sr. listed on the 1810 Census in Prince Edward County who is married in a house without children and both he and his wife are over the age of 45. This William Carter Sr. has a son, William Carter Jr. who also lives in Prince Edward County with his wife, and one son and three daughters (all under the age of 10). In 1796, both William Sr. and Jr. can be found as jurors in Prince Edward County courtrooms. There is also a Wm. Carter listed as the head of "8 white souls" in 1785. DOES ANYBODY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS WILLIAM CARTER OF PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY???? Looking for birth date, death date, marriage date, spouse, parents, children - ANYTHING. Any information appreciated.
