    2. Hi. I believe that the term "Gentleman" referred to a person of means, i.e., a property owner. I also believe this was an English term. For example, on the list of original settlers in Jamestown in 1607, the settlers were either referred to as "Gentleman" or "laborer". Hope this helps. Connie
