Trying to find ancestor-James Willard Lawhorn. Born: 28 Feb 1834, VA. Family traditions say he was Indian (they say Cherokee but the surname does not appear on any Cherokee rolls). His daughter told me he was "bound-out" at age 8 to a Brewer family. In the 1850 census for Nelson Co., p. 222 is listed a James Lawhorn, age 17, born in Nelson Co., VA. He is listed with the Edwin M. Kirby family. This is the only James Lawhorn in the state who matches age and can't be accounted for. I believe he is my great-grandfather. There were also two teenaged girls listed as mulattos and each living with a separate family in this same census in Nelson Co. Is it possible the parents died? Anyone out there who might be able to search guardianship records, etc. I'm including more info. on James Lawhorn in case someone out there really takes an interest in helping me. Would be willing to trade for KY research. Am planning a trip to the historical society soon. Thanks, --Sheryl He was married 4 times. His second marriage was in 1871 in Pendleton Co., KY. He appears in the 1880 census in Lincoln Co., KY (next door to Casey Co. where Benjamin Bennett Lawhorn of Albermarle Co., VA settled in 1812 but he has never been connected to them). He died in Campbell Co., KY in 1921 but seems to have been in and out of the state of KY. He does not appear in the census of any other state in 1860. He is said to have driven a 20-mule-team across death valley, to have been shot by Indians and crawled for several days for help and may have married an Indian squaw out west. I'm assuming all this was before his 1871 marriage.
