Linda at BArnold147@aol.com asks: Is the Overton Harris who married Elizabeth Brockman December 18, 1806 in Albermarle Co., VA related to the Christopher Harris family in anyway? Do you know who his parent's were? Response: I cannot answer your question except to give you some negative information: 1. There are many Overton Harrises in many generations, probably all related to some degree. 2. Christopher Harris the elder of Madison Co., KY (d. ca 1794-96) had a son named Overton Harris by his second wife Agnes McCord. However, that Overton Harris migrated with his father to Madison Co., KY ca 1787 or so (at least Christopher is on the personal property tax list for Madison Co. and also for Albemarle Co. on the tax lists for that year.) Overton married ca 1810 to Nancy Oldham, and he died testate in Madison Co. 1827. In the year 1786, one Overton Harris is a witness to a deed in Louisa Co., VA. Possibly he is related to the other Harris males whose names appear as both grantor and as witnesses. A correspondent tells me [not documented] that William Harris in the deed was married to a Henrietta Baker. Louisa Co. DB F-150-151 5 Oct 1786 William Harris & Hennaretta his wife of Louisa Co. to Manoah Lasley of same; 9 pds; 48 1/2 a. on north east side of Long Cr. bounded by lands of Menoah Lasley, William Harress & John Boswell. William Harris Elizabeth Harris Wit: Samuel Harris, James (X) Harris, Overton Harris 9 Oct 1786 ack. by William Harris & Elizabeth his wife. (Rosalie Edith Davis, LOUISA COUNTY, VIRGINIA DEED BOOKS E & F, 1774-1790 [Manchester, MO: Privately printed, 1983], p. 60) There is an earlier Louisa Co. DB E-267-268, 6 July 1778, in which an Overton Harris Junr. is a witness. It mentions *Robt. Harriss corner* and Cub Creek, suggesting that this Overton Harris is associated with Major Robert Harris about ten years previous to the cited deed, per Robert Harris's 1765 will filed in Louisa Co. However, Robert Harris did not name a son Overton Harris in his will. Perhaps this Overton Harris in 1786 is a nephew, but his parentage is unknown to me. Have you any idea who is the parent/father of the bride Brockman? Land records may reveal some information. Ruth and Sam Sparacio have abstracted & published some deeds and other records of Albemarle Co. You may want to view their catalog at www.antientpress.com There is a deed--really a bond recorded in a deed book--in which a Samuel Brockmn Junr and two others bind themselves to Patrick Henry, Esq., Gov. of VA on condition that David Thomson, Minister of the Gospel in the Baptist Church ... celebrate the rights of matremoney [sic].... It is in Louisa Co. DB F-38-39 dated 13 Sept 1785. Sometimes when a young man married (for the first time) his father would give him some land, but this is not a general rule. Sometimes the father of the bride, if her father were wealthy, would give her a slave or two. So land records of Albemarle Co. or surrounding counties may give you a clue as to the parentage of one or both of these marriage partners. Ruth and Sam Sparacio (books listed on www.antientpress.com) have abstracted some Albemarle Co. records which may be useful in your research. I hope you untangle your roots. Harrises are a tough bunch to untangle. Brockman will be an easier name to research. Several of them appear in Louisa County, Virginia Tithables and Censs, 1743-1785 by Rosalie Edith Davis, but this is earlier than the marriage date you cite. By coincidence I was looking at Wm Harris & Thos. Pollard in Bedford records late 1700's when your mail arrived. I had also begun to look in a book about loose Court Papers in Albemarle Co. by Weisiger. In 1770 folder there was mention of Christopher Harris who had Promissory note from Philip Thurman 10 March 1770 witnessed by Robert Harris and Benj. Thurman. In 1777 folder there was a complicated situation in Albemarle Chancery Court, apparently among various heirs of Henry Davis, decd in 1773 of Hanover Co. He had son Lewis Davis who (I think) had daughter Mary Harris; Hanover will of Henry Davis was witnessed by Overton Harris 24 July 1773; Overton Harris also returned an Inventory in Aug. of 1777. The index to this volume shows 27 entries for HARRIS i. e. Ben, Benjamin, Christopher, Jo., John, John Jr., Lee, Mary, Overton, Richard, Robert, William. for HARRISS; only Joseph Maybe this provides some new clues .... like Hanover for instance. But Hanover records are sparse.
