    2. Louise, you were almost 95% correct in your definition. According to the book "What did they mean by that", the definition is as follows: Under the ancient authority and guidance of the Parish, the walking (processioning) of the boundries of privite lands within the Parish by appointed, knowledgeable, and responsible parishioners, in order that boundries be determined and boundry disputes be resolved. 3. As someone said, there's more than one family of Browns. Mine began with Buckingham Browne who emigrated with his family from London to Essex Co., Virginia in 1703-04. By the time (1750s) his sons migrated to Cumberland Co. VA, it was "Brown." My line went to Alleghany Co. VA after the Civil War. 1. [VAALBEMA] George BROWN, Albemarle > Nelson Co, VA
    2. Cathy Wood
    3. I have a George J BROWN (b. abt 1801 in Albemarle) married Elizabeth HUGHES (b. abt 1807 in Albemarle). Beginning with 1860 census they lived in Nelson County. Does this family relate to any of the Brown families currently being discussed? I would love to know at least the siblings so that I don't have to go back over the census a second time to pick them up later. (I gave up trying to record EVERY Brown!!) Thanks for any hints.

    3. >> I am guessing that land was grouped into precincts and that periodically - every year or couple of years - the owners of the land in each precinct literally walked the boundaries of their properties to confirm them. Is this guess correct? Can anyone shed anymore light on this custom for me?>> Louise, You are correct. This usually occured every 2 years. It is a good way to track neighbors. Either the owner or someone representing him was supposed to appear to show the lines to the processioners. It was a way to avoid boundary disputes. The records I am most familiar with are the Louisa Co. Fredericksville Parish records -- I believe they covered the northern half of present day Albemarle for about 4 - 6 years. This time period was for when this land was taken from Hanover and given to Louisa, and before Albemarle was formed. Albemarle was formed from the land originally taken from Hanover and given to Louisa (that made the northern half of Albemarle), and from land from Goochland Co. which made the southern half. In something like a 20 year period, if you lived in the northern half of present day Albemarle, you would have paid land tax in New Kent, Hanover, Louisa, and lastly Albemarle without ever having moved. After that, northern Albemarle never changed, but southern Albemarle was the mother of other counties. Men who were appointed as processioners by the parish were usually land owners in good standing and usually the processioner for a certain "precinct" was also a landowner in that precinct -- so he knew his neighbors and the land. 3. You got it -- the purpose was to set the tax rate. There might be an article about it on the Virginia State Library web site. http://www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/index.htm Lynne Hundley -----Original Message----- From: HHaden@aol.com <HHaden@aol.com> In trying to trace my Albemarle ancestors I have come across the term "processioning" used in court or legal documents. 3. You keep talking as if there was only one BROWN family; I'm sure there were many. On my website I have a Benjamin BROWN, born about 1718 in Wales who died 9 Nov 1762 at Brown's Cove. He had two wives and thirteen children. This line ties into my DABNEY, HARRIS and RODES lines. Several generations later they also tie into my McNEILL line in what's now West Virginia (not to be confused with other BROWNs from Massachusetts). 3. Deborah, just thought to mention that Albemarle County was created from Goochland and Louisa in 1744. Amherst and Buckingham cut off from Albemarle in 1761. This might help to correlate dates with beginning of county records when searching for residents. 3. I just came across a note from the "History of Albemarle, VA" page 56 listing an Austin Sandridge who died Oct 6, 1831. Austin married Sarah Thurman in Albemarle Co VA in 1799, according to the book. Does anyone know who this Austin Sandridge was? How was he related to Nancy Sandridge, daughter of Wm and Elizabeth (Graves) Sandridge? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Deborah Thurman Parks

    2. Deborah Parks
    3. Hi Thank you to everyone who has responded to my inquiries about the Browns and Sandridges. Most helpful and meaningful. So, I thought I would post what I am most interested in: Nancy Sandridge (b. Feb 4, 1759) of Albemarle Co VA married John Thurman on Dec 10, 1799 while John was home between his service in the Rev WAr. They were married in Albemarle Co VA and Nancy states in a widow's pension application that she was attended by Isabel Beavers on her wedding day. I have not been able to identify who this Isabel Beavers was - any ideas? John Thurman and Nancy stayed in Albemarle Co Va for 18+ years and then moved to Sevier/Blount Co TN. The last date known that Nancy was living was in 1851 - she lived along time. According to the pension application, John and Nancy had alot of children - but only three are listed and gave affidavits to help Nancy out: Sarah Thurman, b. in 1781 at the time of the Siege of Yorktown - Sarah was their oldest child. Lucy Thurman Tunas b. May 31, 1783 was living Sevier Co Tn in 1847 Martha Thurman James b. July 6, 1796 and was living in Sever Co TN in 1845. If anyone recognizes any of these people or has any information on the family of Nancy Sandridge, I would appreciate knowing. I am also very interested in learning where the Sandridge homestead was. I would be happy to mail copies of Nancy's pension application to anyone researching this line. Thanks again Deborah

Christening Records of their children Robert L Peter Field Mary Abigail Thomas Jr's will possibly 8 July 1836. I am not positive about that date. Since his name is Thomas Jefferson, he is very hard to separate out from the hundreds of other listings. I want to make photo copies, so need the films to borrow inter library loan. 2. April
    3. I am interested in all the Browns of Albemarle and their connections to the Sandridges...My husbands line has only been found here in Augusta County VA...but going back to the McCauley part of his line...it intersects with the Albemarle Sandridges when ........ Sarah McCauley marries William Vess whose son Saul marries Lucy McDaniel then their daughter Ida Bell Vess married Zettie Kiel Sandriges...son of James Allen Sandridge ...... Sarah's sister Polly McCauley is my husband's great grandmother...she married Will Jack Brown in 1890 or so.... Will Jack is the son of Cornelius Brown ( we also have his father listed as Lineus *which could be short for Cornelius* and Doc Evans Brown)....all three names appear in legal documents... for the name of the man who is married to Catherine Fisher ..... In a document following the death of Catherine's father (Henry Fisher).... she and Lineus Brown are given land.... then when their son Will Jack marries Polly in Augusta County...he is listed as Doc Evans Brown on the marriage lic...then in the census when Will Jack is very young...he is listed as Cornelius...so does anyone have anything to add to my muddled mess here? April

    2. While we are on the BROWNs of Albemarle Co, perhaps someone can help me - I am seeking information on William T Brown who married Lucy A Ashlin in Albemarle Co VA in 1852. Lucy's sister Sarah Ashlin married Elijah HUGH on the same day in Albemarle. I am trying to confirm that these women, listed in the Albemarle marriage records as daughters of "Frances Ashlin, widow" are the daughters of Hartwell Ashlin, who probably died before 1850. If they are the daughters of Hartwell and Frances, their siblings included: Susan Frances, John, Eliza, Chesley and Virginia Ashlin. Susan married John P GOODMAN; Virginia married a man surnamed SKIPPER. Thanks in advance for any help you may provide. Louise Galaska
