    2. Mary
    3. This is the first time I have found the names GLEASON and BRYANT connected. My gggrandfather was named William GLEASON BRYANT. >From LDS film 0030255, Albemarle County, VA Court Order Books, 1744-1748, 1783-1785: p. 389: "Samuel Gleason and Wm. Movatt(?) surviving partners of _____ against John Bryant: in debt This suit is discontinued through the Sheriff's insufficient service and return. July 15, 1748" Does anyone know anything about this suit? What kind of business were they in together? If there is anyone in Albemarle Co who could look at this actual book, maybe they can figure out what business it was; and maybe what preceded this action. Thanks! 1. [VAALBEMA] BRADLEY DOWELL SHIFLETT & WOOD
    2. JA
    3. BRADLEY DOWELL SHIFLETT & WOOD in Orange County, these folks farmed along Preddy's Creek which divides Albemarle & Orange Counties For those who wanted the marriage, I have info herein included: Elizabeth BRADLEY m. John DOWELL liscense 23dec1799 Bondsman Richard DOWELL Wit. Alexander GARRETT d/o William BRADLEY, who consents Wit. Richard DOWELL & Richard BRADLEY Min. Hamilton GOSS 26dec1799 My hypothesis: As William BRADLEY who consented is most likely my GGGG Grandfather. The services for three or four of the BRADLEY & WOOD marriages were "solemnized" by the Rev. GOSS. From the BRADLEY book by Wendell Bradley, the 3 sons of Wm. are listed but the 4 spots for the girls have no names nor info. Wm. consented to his daughter Sarah BRADLEY to wed Hezekiah WOOD and I know Sarah was my GGG Grandmother. A few days back, while going through some papers(in my possession for 2 years tch-tch) from a fellow WOOD searcher, and after having more knowledge of this family, I noticed the above info which came from Stewart Estes WOOD. Stewart found the info in "Albemarle Va. Marriages 1780-1853" by John Vogt. SO, as there is no info on the Sarah's 3 sisters, I thought i'd see if Elizabeth might just be one of them. If so there are only two to go. It is easy to see the DOWELLs, BRADLEYs & WOODs are quite mingled in marriages. I don't have SHIFLETT but for those who do have SHIFLETT; this AM while trying to organize some of WOOD BRADLEY papers, I came upon one page from the 1810 tax list for Orange from which I am listing the SHIFLETTs: Below are all SHIFLETTs: Shiflett, John. 1 0 6 , Bland. 1 0 2 , Richard 1 0 0 , Larking 1 0 1 , Bland 1 0 1 , Overton 1 0 1 , Stephen 1 0 1 , John jr, 1 0 1 It appears that there were two Blands? 3. In Virginia Publick Claims for Albemarle County, Court of 14 June, 1782, a John Dowell got a certificate for 325# beef - [value of] 2 pounds 14 shillings 2 pence taken by N. Lewis for Contl. use. The interpretation (mine) is that Dowell had the beef taken under the Provisions Law by "impressment" sometime earlier. For Genealogy it would seem to be reasonable proof this John Dowell lived there before date of the certificate. Sorry to say this is all I know about a "John Dowell" of Albemarle and have never had a reason to search the line. Hope it's useful. 3. I don't know. JEHU is a given name that appears now and then in writing which I've seen in several states and in different families. In my own Hunt line my gr-gr uncle Jesse Hunt was listed as "Jehu" in Alabama Census of 1830. I thought Gehugh sounded like Jehu & written by someone who couldn't get it right in any event! 3. > DOWELL, John & DOWELL, Richard > who were present at a marriage 23dec1799. Jim, I have some Dowell info. There are records for a Wm. Dowell just bef. 1700 in Surry Co. There is a 1756 record that Wm. or John Dowell was a trooper in the militia in Prince Wm. County. I am interested in whose m. they were present for in Albemarle, if you'd care to share. My line is as follows: John Dowell b.bef. 1713 m. Mary Unk. bef. 1734 to Richard Dowell m. Mary to John Dowell m. Mary Davis to William Dowell b. 1790 Albemarle m. 18 January 1810 Albemarle Co. Sally Pickett (d/o Mace Picket & unk.) to Sally Dowell b. 1820 Albemarle Co. d. aft. 1870 m. October 1838 Albemarle Tipton Walton (s/o John Walton & Rhoda Davis) I am pretty confident of the line from John Dowell m. Mary Davis downwards, but do not know Mary's parents. There are several chancery records at LVA concerning this line of Dowels (that lived on Prittys/Priddys Creek in Albemarle) but they are only available by visiting LVA. They have not yet been microfilmed and I was told there are no plans to microfilm the Albemarle records in the near future. The most promising ones appear to be: MAJOR DOWELL & WIFE vs. HEIR(S) OF JOHN DOWELL 1806-022 MAJOR DOWELL vs.HEIR(S) OF JOHN DOWELL 1809-046 This would (I think) be the John Dowell who m. Mary Davis. Someone you can contact for Dowel info is James E. Dowell email: jedjad@aol.com He has been researching them for more than 20 years. If you share your info with him, he will share with you. Hope this has helped point you in the right direction. Julie Shiflet Family Genealogy http://www.geocities.com/~jcrosswell/

Census: George Gentry, age 90; and John Walton age 12, also listed in household, also Edward Walton, age 23. There is an earlier Jehu Walton, who was a contemporary of Thompson b. 1747 and Ison b. 1750 -- in fact I think he was older than either of them. I do not have any additonal info on the older Jehu. 1. [VAALBEMA] Hunt, Crispin, in Albemarle 1770's, -his family?
    2. wmhunt
    3. Greetings to all; Does anyone know name of a wife and/or any children for a Crispin/Crispan Hunt who apparently lived in Albemarle County at least c1760-1775? I've heard a rumor his wife's name was Mary. A man of that name was in debt and being chased by the Sheriff of Albemarle at various times. There's nothing to indicate he was "caught". In 1768 Crispin Hunt of Albemarle made a deed to a George Perry Jr. (not researched yet). There was some implied but vague connection to people named Bond (of Amherst Co.?) 'Crispin Hunt' shows up in Bedford County records 1781 when he bought 404 acres from Thomas Daugherty on Goose Creek. In 1783 Crispan(sic) Hunt & wife (not named) sold 100 acres Goose Creek to Richard Melton; sold 200 acres Goose Creek to John Howell 1784. Crispin Hunt, Memican Hunt, are on Bedford Pers. Prop. Tax Lists in Bedford in 1782. Both of these names basically disappear from records there after a few years. Would appreciate any information and any new clues from Albemarle. Regards, Bill Hunt

    1. [VAALBEMA] John FITZGERALD of Philadelphia!
    2. Vincent Summers
    3. Hi, I have an unknown g,g,g-grandfather John FITZGERALD. He was married 1783, in Philadelphia to Mary KILLINGER. Throughout the descendant lines appear given names of: George (likely from KILLINGER line) and William and Lawrence and James (likely from AUSTIN line). I noticed a listing on LDS Online of a John FITZGERALD born 1752 son of Lawrence FITZGERALD and Susanna HILL. John was born in Albemarle! It is a long-shot, but when you seek mid-1700's ancestors, it often is. Does anyone have this name, and know if the fellow could have come to Philadelphia? Thanks, Vince Summers
