Hi to the List The county NOR THE COMMONWEALTH DID NOT COLLECT/REGISTER births and deaths prior to 1853. The official parish records up to the revolution or thereabouts did collect these and there is much to be found in these parish registers, but from about the late 1700s to 1853...nothing, nilch, nada.... to get this information - one has to go to other sources. Sometimes you may prove parentage, but not the birthdate. wills, deeds, census, chancery records, military recods, family bibles, letters, etc. Alice in Fluvanna

There were no birth records for Virginia during the time you need. The clerk will be of no help. Alice in Fluvanna

Hi Albema-l Since April, 16 folks have been conducting a complete inventory of Maplewood Cemetery in Charlottesville -- recording existing grave markers, photos, damage, inscriptions (comparing them to DAR pubs), etc. W'e've finished over 2 acres of the 3.5 acres there and still moving along. All this will be available at the Historical Society and I'm also starting to put inventory information on-line. Now I'd like to add plenty of historical information also about people interred at Maplewood. I hope anyone with information about a person at Maplewood will consider passing that info on to me. This web site is designed for the general public so lists of decendents probably won't be included but short biographies and web site links sure will. Please take a look at this site--still being developed --but should still give you a good idea of what's being planned. Go to http://members.aol.com/SueW601/concern.html Take the On Line Tour at the top of the page to get to Maplewood Thanks SueW
the name of the books is The History of Albemarle County in Virginia, by Rev. Woods. We just call it Woods History of Albemarle

Hello Pat and thank you for your letter, although I do not have a Frances Childress in my files with it being so close to Albemarle county I would not entirely write it off, mine stayed right there in Albemarle county for the most part but some of the Childress descendants did migrate away especially to Texas { Default Signature #1 } Since my stroke of October 1998. I do not send long chatty letters, and sometimes I will be slow to answer as I only have my right hand to type with. From now on I am going to attempt to type normally instead of all capitals, of course sometimes I will be in a hurry or just plain lazy! So, then it will be all capitals. I just found the marriage of Joseph FIELDS and Mary WOOD on 2 Oct 1809 in Alberlmarle Co. Does anyone have any more information on them? I need to know who their parents and brothers and sisters are and where they were born? Thank you, Eva okasan10@aol.com

OK, now for my muddy contribution Many years ago in the early beginning of my research, I found this story about the founding of the name of MINOR in my lines. A man named Meindert Doodes or Doodas came to America from Holland and when he had a son he wanted to be very American so he named his son Doodes Minor as he considered himself Doodes Major. And Major & Minor mean Sr. & Jr. in Holland, or did at that time (1610-1640) And I too puzzle over the various Sr. & Jr. notations in my research. By the way about 1997 I found out a mailing list could be made for the county of interest at Rootsweb and so Karen gave me this list for Albemarle county of Virginia, I am so glad to see that it is alive and doing well. Rosanna, I thoroughly agree. Rev. Woods was a descendant of Michael Woods, Jr. as I am. However, I do not agree with his assumption that Michael, Jr. was the son of Michael, Sr. Senior and Junior did not mean the same thing as they do now. It was used to distinguish two men with the same name living in the same area. There is even a monument at the Protestant Church near Ivy that has Michael, Sr with Michael, Jr. on down several generations. this may not be the case, but in some very old documents , and early census, I have found where the person recording wrote: Yr. for the younger person with same name.{this was not in the same family even at times}... but later when someone else was recording , the Yr, became Jr. . this was just a thought, and might muddy the water even more. thanks J. Good Morning: I am looking for any information onthe family of William Henry Stevenson b.1820 d.1910, married to Matilda Grey. They came from Georgia, place unknown, to Charlottesville. I am hoping that I have the right county. Any help appreciated, and if there are any census lists for this county, would someone please share. William was a Black man and Matilda was American Indian. Thank you in advance for any help. Gloria.
