Hi All, Is there anyone who can suggest a Church or Parish which might have a record of divorce? Will the real Hezekiah please stand! ******************************************************** [1820 Wood, Hezekiah US Census Albemarle County Va.] [1830-1840-1850 Wood, Hezekiah US Census Albemarle County Va. Fredricksburg Parish] Likely, these three are the same Hezekiah. [1827, Dec 05 WOOD, Hezekiah married Nancy BROWN (possibly from the Brown’s Cove area] This Hezekiah is likely the one above. [1840, US Census Daviess County Indiana 1850, US Census Daviess County Indiana; Veale Twnsp WOOD, Hezekiah] No further info as yet [WOOD, Hezekiah, m. 1 july 1799 in Albemarle to Patsy GENTRY, (dau. of Richard GENTRY & Elizabeth STRINGER)] This Hezekiah; from family **“hand down” is the father of Frances WOOD b. 15mar1799 who wed Samuel COCHRAN in Madison County, Kentucky on 19dec1826. [ WOOD, Hezekiah, (son of Hopewell WOOD & Ann MUSE), m. 2 may 1802 in Orange County Va. to Sarah “Sallie” BRADLEY, dau. of William 1725 BRADLEY, son of Richard 1700 BRADLEY of Orange County, Virginia] Frances and all of her half-siblings are listed in this Hezekiah's Will so, it is for sure they are his, from two different mothers. Every thing on this page is from published records “cepting” for the **family hand down. Can anyone provide any church/Parish or other source which might give proof that this was the Hezekiah who wed Patsy? On the otherhand, can anyone disprove that he was? HELP! Jim

For starters: Dr. George K. Schweitzer, in his 1995 volume on VA research, states court orders are available in the court house for 1744-8, 1783-5, 1791-1804, 1806-31. I, too, would be interested in hearing from anyone who has been to the court house and knows if the orders have been indexed and/or microfilmed. I apologize for being so tardy in finishing up Alexander Brown's Early Settlers of Albermarle/Amherst/Bedford list. We had a busy holiday season followed by a seemingly never ending flu/cold season! I have finished "T,U, and V" and Carrie Hoffert of the Amherst list is kindly completing "W & Y" which will be posted soon. The list is temporarily located on my Magann family website till donated to rootsweb and transferred to my Amherst Co records site in the works. You can find the almost completed list at http://members.tripod.com/magannfamily/id58.htm The home page http://members.tripod.com/magannfamily/index.htm has a search box, but "R,S, T, U, and V" aren't indexed yet. Hopefully, I can get that done shortly. As noted on the site: The list is from the Alexander Brown papers at Swem Library, College of William and Mary- Special Collections Dept. It is a partial list of those who settled in Old Albermarle prior to 1761, Old Amherst prior to 1776, and some Bedford French/Indian War soldiers. I do not know any more about the list than is presented on the site. Some of Brown's names have numbers beside them that do not match the source list. Since some have a "p" beside them, it is speculated that they are page numbers of a source only beknownst to Brown. Janet

Yesterday I was "into" old deed records (on microfilm) in Patrick Co, VA, and found many, many references to Sheltons (where there is a Shelton there is often a Bryant) -- I didn't make any notes but do remember a Rodham Shelton. There were a lot of other first names, too. Cousin Mary in OK (p.s.: there were no promising Bryants, only an Elias Bryant) Mary Bryant Park crosstich@webtv.net
Is there a source listing names of tutors, teachers and school (non-college) operators in Albemarle Co., VA 1750 to 1800? I am looking for information on Benjamin Sneed, b. 1720-1, who taught siblings of Thomas Jefferson and TJ's grandson. Thanks, Trueman Farris jfarris@execpc.com
Dear list Members, I just subscribed to this list after discovering one of my ancestors lived and died in this county testate. His Will was recorded in 1799. His name was Henry Shelton and I descend from his daughter Sarah Shelton who married Thomas White. I know there is a lot of conflicting information about the Shelton Families of old VA, so I'm trying to cautiously document each generation, relationship, and event so I can submit this correct info on my SAR application. Any help or guidance in locating original records, old cemeteries, and old homesteads would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Robert C. Johnston, Jr. 139 Eagle Creek Drive Wetumpka, AL 36092 USA rcj@mindspring.com
Hi to the person who requested the pictures : I have Wed off and if you can let me know what cemetary in Esmont and which graves you want photographed I will try to do it. Carol
Hi to the list as to getting help in cleaning cemeteries...It has been suggested to me that boy scouts may take on a project such as this...when I was living in Arkansas, there was discussion with the county sheriff as to using people in jail (if they were willing) and/or as a community service project as a penalty for offenses. There are probably other ways, anyone else got suggestions? Alice in Fluvanna
