Dear List members, Are there any books available that contain inventories of all the cemeteries in Albemarle County? If so, how can one obtain copies of these inventory books? Or, is there anyone willing to do some lookups for me from the cemetery books of old graves? Thanks, Robert C. Johnston, Jr. 139 Eagle Creek Drive Wetumpka, AL 36092 USA rcj@mindspring.com
My parents were married in Hollister,San Benito,Ca September 24, 1938. they are both deceased but there is a family story about my Dad's first marriage to a Katherine or Catherine. I know a lot about him but I do not know where this might have occurred...Scottsville Albemarle,VA where he was born to Akron Summit,OH where he lived with his parents as a small child. 1. If there is anybody who can get me that Marriage record , it might just show the first wife's name and location of the marriage,we 5 remaining siblings are wondering if there might be more siblings out there some where 2. Everton's is presently taking Pre-pub orders for the 10th Edition. Mary is right. No one seriously interested in genealogical research should be without this great publication. There is a great book,"Handybook for Genealogists" publshed by Everton Publlshers, that lists every county, in every state, gives what records are available in which county, dates, etc., etc. I have about worn mine out -- has so much in it! When I first got into genealogy, my old time researchers told me to buy the book! Costs about $37.00. Can be ordered from the Everton Publishers site.
This list will give you an idea of what kinds of records are available on microfilm. I'm not sure whether they do interlibrary loan to out-of-state libraries. (Be sure to get the whole address, in case it breaks into two lines in the message.) Virginia State Library -- Index to Microfilm Records http://www.lva.lib.va.us/collect/localrecs/locrecs-index.htm Did you check the Albemarle Co. page on Rootsweb to see whether the info. is given on how to get documents from the county. That information is somewhere on the web (a site for all the counties in the country) -- you might try Cyndi's list. It's also in major genealogy how-to books. Folks, The JMRL book sale is on at Gordon Avenue. While this assists a fairly good cause, I post about it for other reasons. These booksales are often noted to contain City Directories and School Yearbooks! I was there this morning, but did not see any City Directories, I am sad to report. They refresh the shelves from time-to-time with new stuff, so some may yet turn up. Yearbooks are there in abundance, however! Especially were there ones for the Medical College of Virginia, or MCV. The X-RAY, as the book is called, was to be found in fine quantity. I obtained the 1931 volume for two bucks. You may wish to hop over there to snap up whatever you can for lookups (this encourages others to, in turn, help you). I hereby offer lookups in the X-RAY. It won't do you much good, likely, but I also purchased the 1959 HALCYON for Swarthmore College in Philadelphia. Vince Summers

I'm impressed with the information I have seen shared on this board about the Carr family, and I know many of them migrated to Kentucky and then to Tennessee. I was wondering if anyone had a Margaret Carr in their database? She was born around 1844, we think in Kentucky. Her family migrated up to Perry County, IN, right across the Ohio River. Also, where in Kentucky did this Carr family live before migrating to Tennessee? I think that would help. Thank you. I was just wondering if there is any way to get a transcription of a death certificate in Virginia also an Obituarary The reason that I ask is because living in California I am fortunate to be able to research birth and deaths online and through the [CADI] -L mailing list to be able to ask for a dct and obit on most of my California relatives.I have been really amazed at how much can be learned from these two documents As Most of my Virginia work is in Albemarle county that is my area of interest and for West Virginia it is county SANDRA TYLER DUNCAN in Sacramento,CA admin for DUNCAN-L@rootsweb.com TYLER-L@rootsweb.com VANSCOY-L@rootsweb.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Page full of links for genealogists: http://www.progenealogists.com/genealogysleuthb.htm Very useful site full of Genealogy Links
Who is Mary E. Simms? Mary E. Simms is listed in will of Ann Dudley Houchins to inherit whole estate. Apparently something happened and Mary E. Simms didn't receive the estate due to claims made by the cousins of Abner Houchins, husband to Ann. (see below) Seeking information regarding the connection of Simms, Houchins, & Dudley of Louisa, Albemarle, Fluvanna, and Goochland Co., VA. Abner Houchins, son of Edward, born Aug. 4, 1790 and died in Louisa Co., VA abt 1850. He was married Jan. 9, 1821 to Ann M. Dudley. Apparently, there were no children. The provisions of his will are so unusual that a portion of it is herewith given: "Second I lend to my wife, Ann Houchins, all of my Estate, both real and personal, to wit: the tract of land on which I live, all of my negroes, Peter, Werter, Spencer, Norbon, Frances and her child, Julian, and their increase during her life. I also lend to her all of my household furniture and kitchen furniture, stock, plantation, tools, crop, etc. At the death of my wife, Ann Houchins, it is my wish and desire that my executor hereafter mentioned should sell all of my estate, real and personal, and divide it among my negroes. I also wish my negroes to select their master. Should any of my negroes be disobedient to my wife it is my wish they should be sold and forfeit all claims they may have on my estate. Should my wife be compelled to sell any one of my Negroes from misbehavior it is my wish the money should be appropriated to the purchase of another negro." In a codicil to his will dated Nov. 22, 1849, Abner gave to his wife, in fee simple, a tract of land known as Dudley's Tract, but now called Morrison's Gold Mine. Ann Houchins died in 1862 and by will left all her property to MARY E. SIMMS. In 1864 John Chiles Houchins filed a petition to claim the estate of Abner Houchins. Per the petition: He directed the whole of his estate real and personal after the death of his wife should be sold and divided among his negroes. Your petition further show that the said cause came on after hearing at the April Term 1864 of said court upon the bill and exhibit and an order of publication as to the absent unknown defendants, none of whom appeared when upon it held that the bequest to the slaves of testator was void and of no effect, and a claim was entered to that effect and the whole estate of the testator including his slaves was ordered to be sold and the proceeds there of divided among his heirs at law and legal distribution. Any help would be appreciated. Bebe

An excellent source for research in Virginia is the "Guide to Virginia Local Court Records on Microfilm from the Library of Virginia" found at www.lva.lib.va.us/dlp/courtrec/. Your local public library can order through ILL (interlibrary loan program) up to 5 reels of film at a time for you for a period of 2 week use. I just checked and the court order records mentioned earlier are available for loan. Kathy Wilcox Researching Carr, Rodes, and Thurmonds from Albemarle
