    2. Hi, New to this list and hoping for assistance. I'm trying to pin down an elusive ancestor (aren't we all). Would appreciate a look up in ANY city directory in Albemarle County in 1920 for surname: HANTZMON. He was superintendent of gas in Charlottesville around that time. I'm hunting for a home address so I can search for census records. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Dottie Engemann Ormond Beach, FL

    2. Gordon
    3. I am looking for any connections or information on my John Garrison. He was born 31 Mar 1801 in VA. He married Sarah Ikenberry 17 Apr 1825 in Franklin Co., VA. They moved from VA to OH late 1820s, then to Carroll Co., IN abt 1837. Died 4 Mar 1877. Burial info, ancestors, or other relatives would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to establish whether my John Garrison is the John Garrison born in Albemarle County abt 1800, son of Jeremiah Garrison and Saluda Davis (and brother of William, Frances, Lewis, Elizabeth, Agness, and Wilson). Does anyone have knowledge of the Albemarle County John Garrison's later life?

    3. Seeking information about the Vaughan family in the mid to late 1700's in Albemarle, Goochland/Bedford area. There was a Joseph Vaughan who married Ann Payne in Goochland in 1770, later shows in Bedford records, and thought to have been in the Albemarle records. The counties lines changed during that time. One of Joseph's daughters was Clary Vaughan who married Thomas Howell. Any info about the Vaughan family will be appreciated.

    1. [VAALBEMA] Black's Law Dictionary and genealogy
    2. The connection? Well, for starters, in transcribing old handwritten documents (wills, deeds, etc.) often a word is very hard to read, and the way the word is used in the document will give clue that it is a "legal" meaning...using what letters I can, this dictionary may help. when a word is used that is not understood (by me) I turn to the book. the book may give alternative words that are used more often or more recently.. I heard about the book in a genealogy seminar many years ago and was lucky to find a reasonably priced old copy. that enough?

Black Law Dictionary. (The older the better!) Will give away to anyone locally (Albemarle/Fluvanna) or for postage out of area. First one asking gets it. All serious genealogy buffs should have this resource on their shelves... Alice in Fluvanna

    1. [VAALBEMA] Icy Snow
    2. Hi List. I am new to this list and I am hoping that you can help me with information on my ancestor ICY SNOW I think she was born ca. 1740 - 1744. And believe she died by ca 1796. I do know she was married to John Spencer. I have two form's of proof. 1. I have a page from a book from Fulton Co. Illinois 1890 history book that states that E.D. SPENCER can trace his ancestor's back to a JOHN SPENCER and ICY SNOW of Loudoun Co. Va. 2.Land transaction between JOHN SPENCER and ICEY his wife and GEORGE LEWIS. Loudoun Co. Va. 1778. In the presence of GEORGE SUMMERS, JAMES LEWIS, AMARISH BONHAM ? CHARLES LEWIS, BENJAMIN MASON. Children of John Spencer and Icey Snow documented : 1.Daivd Spencer born 19 Mar 1768 ? married to Mary Grove. died 29 Dec. 1823 [ Documentation that David son of John] 2.Mary Spencer : born 15 Oct. 1774 married 19 April 1795 to Benjamin James : Mary died 20 Oct. 1830, I believe in Loudoun Co. Va. [Documentation] By way of record's and book's I believe Mary to be John and Icy's second daughter I think it is possible that her older sister is : Elizabeth Spencer -m- Frances Gulick 1 July 1801 ? Bondman James Hunt and John Spencer JOHN SPENCER married Phoebe Rightmire ca 1794. Any help anyone can give me would be wonderful as this a real brick wall for me. Thank You Sondra

    1. [VAALBEMA] Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Fluvanna, VA photos
    2. DR Glass
    3. The cemetery mentioned in the subject line is near Scottsville, Albemarle County, VA. It was established in 1853. I've finally gotten a chance to start digitizing the photos I took last Fall of Glass/Kidd/Johnson/Haislip/Crenshaw/Brookman/Mitchell/Tilman headstones at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery (Fluvanna County, VA). They were shot using 100 ASA Kodak film, scanned in at about 300 dpi, and saved as bitmaps, so the resolution is quite good (makes it easier to read some of the dates). I'm adding them to my Family Tree Maker file as I go (now over 7200 related names). Should you be interested (or related!), contact me privately at dglass@gte.net (to avoid possible congestion on VAALBEMA-L). I do plan to follow Roger's outstanding suggestion and submit them to Rootsweb/USGENWEB soon. You may want to look through some of your photos you've previously taken, as you may already have pictures of relatives' headstones in the batch. Keep in mind too that many lines which originated in Albemarle (or Goochland earlier) County have migrated. Although my 5GGrandparents were married in Goochland County in 1758, I've discovered a branch of the family that traveled through Georgia and settled in Collin County, Texas (near Dallas). You will find there are many of us "displaced Virginians" who are willing to help out in other states. Dave Glass San Angelo, TX

    2. Roger L. Goodman
    3. Greetings, all. I am posting to let you know what I have heard regarding the taking of cemetery photos tomorrow. So far, I have not received any commitments to take any photos at all (other than my own commitment to take the North Garden cemetery, and possibly the Scottsville cemetery). I received several emails from people outside the state, who think it's a great idea, and are hoping people will take photos of the cemeteries they are interested in. The webpage that I was thinking of when I wrote the last message, is at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/vastones.htm and Bob Card is the caretaker there. Some ideas for you, if you decide to take some photos: Bob Card (tombstones@prodigy.net) can use the photos in nearly any resolution, but will convert them to something approaching VGA resolution (640x480), so if your camera will take something near that to start with, then he won't have to convert them. Bob accepts from 1 photo per cemetery, to thousands, so if you only take a picture of "your" ancestor, you can submit it. For larger groups of photos, you may want to burn a CDROM and mail it to him, rather than send it via email, but talk to Bob and work something out. Be sure to take some sunblock if you plan to spend much time taking photos. And take plenty of water to drink. Good luck in your research. Roger

    1. [VAALBEMA] Cemetery Photos
    2. Roger L. Goodman
    3. Greetings, all! With this weekend being Memorial Day, and several of you will be traveling to cemeteries, I would like to suggest that you take a digital camera with you, and take some photos of the tombstones in the cemeteries that you visit. Small cemeteries can easily be covered by one person, but larger cemeteries would need several people to take photos. Perhaps we need some coordination here, but mostly I think people could just go out and take some photos. If coordination is needed, I would be willing to try to keep tabs on who's doing what, at least for Albemarle County; I don't know if I am ready to try to keep tabs on what everyone is doing in the whole state! :) This is just an idea I'm floating/proposing, since cemeteries usually look their best at Memorial Day, and it usually isn't too hot yet to be out. There is at least one website posting photos of Virginia cemeteries (don't have the website info with me at the moment, but I can track it down), so there is somewhere to put all these photos once we gather them. I personally am looking at the possibility of going down to North Garden or Scottsville to take photos, but will relenquish those sites if someone else desires to do them. My camera gets about 400 VGA-size photos on each 32MB compact-flash(tm) memory card (I have two), so I should be able to get through one cemetery at least. Batteries will be the thing to remember to take. :) If enough interest is generated, I will post a list of what cemeteries are scheduled to be covered, on Saturday or Sunday, so everyone will know what is going on by Monday. If there is no interest, well, then I'll let this die, and continue covering cemeteries as I get time. Sorry to be so long-winded, but I'm just throwing some thoughts onto the screen. 3. The 1890 census burned, so there were only fragments left. I think ancestry was doing an *1890 substitute* project -- using land taxes etc. whatever was available. 1. [VAALBEMA] John White, h/o Ann Wisdom, who died in 1787 Orange County, Virginia
    2. Dear List Members, I'm trying to research and document a John WHITE and his wife Ann who is said to have been a WISDOM. John White was said to have been a son of John "Conyers" WHITE who died in England, but I haven't been able to prove this yet. The John WHITE I'm trying to accurately document through courthouse records and VA State records, was said to have been born in England in 1696, lived in King & Queen Co., VA where he met his wife Ann (WISDOM?), and later moved his family to Orange County, VA, possibly stopping for a while in Caroline County, VA (unless the county lines changed over the years). John died in Orange Co. in 1787 leaving a Will naming his children. I have not seen this Will, so I'm looking for a copy of it along with any records peratining to the probating and settling of this Will and Estate. Does anyone have copies of all these Estate records on file in Orange County? I'm descended from his son Thomas WHITE who married Sarah Shelton, d/o Henry SHELTON who died in Albemarle County, VA in 1799, a descedant of the SHELTONS of "Rural Plains" in Hanover Co., VA. I am also interested in collecting documents pertaining to Thomas WHITE and his wife Sarah SHELTON . I know nothing of where they died and are buried, nor have I found any of their Estate papers yet. I feel they may have died in Elbert or Wilkes County, GA, but I haven't confirmed this yet. I'd also like to prove the relationship between John WHITE of Orange Co. and the other WHITES who lived in Orange and Caroline County, namely Jeremiah WHITE and RIchard WHITE who show up in many old 18th century records in the aformentioned counties in VA. Any help in locating documentation on these men would be helpful. I'm big on documentation, so if anyone has copies of actual records or the proper references of where documents are recorded (i.e. volume and page number of the record book) for weach person mentioned above, I would be forever greatful. Any help is appreciated, but I'm not really interested in undocumented databases, online or off, because of all the conflicting "theories", and not "facts", I seen recently on the WHITE, SHELTON, and OLIVER Families of Central VA. Thank you for your time,
