    1. Re: [VAALBEMA-L] "Sprirts" reimbursements
    2. The main reason I asked this question is because I don't really think it is for "drinking" purposes. Perhaps if I just saw the requests for reimbursement in the courts, I could think this, but I've seen these requests being made in church records too! On one page of church notes, you have the parishoners ready to "evict" an individual for public drunkness, or breaking some kind of "drinking" commandment, yet on another page in the very same church book/record, you will find an individual requesting reimbursement from the parishoners/church for a burial and included in said amount of money is the "liquor". Thus the question...What did they use this liquor for?? Thanks!

    3. Hi to the list and to Brenda... saw your post re the liquor and one response...I am wondering...if this was presented to the court for reimbursement...seems this is a person without the means to pay for the cost of burying, but yet he had friends who mourned??? Seems like friends would have pitched in to help with the burial, sounds like professional mourners to me...but what do I know...sure hope some good conversations get going on this... 1. [VAALBEMA-L] "Sprirts" reimbursements
    2. Ok, people. I have a question which is kind of silly, but... In reading old court records (mid 1700's - early 1800's), I often see where someone is asking for reimbursements of the court/people for a fine "Christian-like" burial. These expenses listed include taking care of the sick person, a pine box, white linen/cloth, but the one expense I don't understand is the request for reimbursement of liquor. So, the question is this...What did these people do with the liquor? Did the living drink it while mourning for the lost? Did they use it like an embalment type fluid? Did they pour it over the body in hopes the animals wouldn't dig up the dead? Does anyone really know the answer to this question? Thanks! Brenda
