    1. [VAALBEMA-L] Re: Strange Surname
    2. Michelle
    3. Hi Listers, If I already sent this--oops, excuse me. In reference to those researching the surname Strange, there is a Littlebury Strange listed in the 1782 Head of Household list for Halifax. It says he has 9 whites and 0 blacks living in his home. Hope this helps someone. Michelle

    1. Re: [VAALBEMA-L] "Sprirts" reimbursements
    2. Alice: I don't know if the mourners used the "spirits" or not. All I've seen is Mr. So & So asking for reimbursements and there will be this list with some, but not all of the following included, with the exception of "Spirits"...that will always be on the list: caring for the people, digging grave, pine box, white linen, bam-bam or rum (spririts). Now I'm strarting to wonder if the people didn't use it to wash themselves with AFTER dealing with/prepping the dead?

I was thinking that but thought you all might think I was being flippent...I found my gggrandmother's pharm. bill and she was sent a pint of whiskey every week or every other week...I just figured it was to help her with pain or something.....unless they were trying to "pickle" her before...well, never mind... 1. [VAALBEMA-L] More liquor!
    2. Might as well add my two cents to this discussion. I'm sure many of you are aware that the term "liquor" does not necessarily mean the alcoholic kind but may refer to many types of liquids used for various purposes. In this line it seems likely that it may have been a type of embalming liquid or "liquor". How it was used is another subject for discussion. Maybe there is a geriatric funeral director among us that can contribute.

    2. Anna L Wong
    3. Can anyone check in a book for the marriage date of Henry FRANKLIN and Margaret HENSLEY in Albemarle County, VA? Also, if anyone has information on their births and/or baptisms??? (Please do not send me information from the "FamilySearch.org" I've already been there and found a lot of confusing data). Anna - Phoenix, AZ - USA [email protected]

    1. Re: [VAALBEMA-L] "Sprirts" reimbursements
    2. Anne: Thanks for your input. I was thinking medicinal also. But, there must be something else there too since every single time I see a request for reimbursement, I also see the liquor cost request too. So, not every single person would absolutely have to have liquor for medicinal purposes, or would they? I've also seen where someone found a stranger, just dead in the field, and took the man and gave him a "fine Christian burial" and asked for liquor reimbursement. It's as much as 1/2 gallon and sometimes as much as 5 gallons being requested for reimbursement. Thanks again!! Brenda

    2. Brenda I don't know what else it was used for, but it was used for medicinal purposes as a sedative/anesthetic. Anne

    1. [VAALBEMA-L] HUGHES / BOWLES
    2. Vince Hughes
    3. I am searching for the wife of my 4th great grandfather William HUGHES of Amherst Co, Va. I have records that indicate he married a Susannah (Last Name Unknown) and lived in the Harris Creek area of Amherst. He died in 1802. I have found records of a marriage between a William HUGHES and Susannah BOWLES that took place in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland, Va on 10 APR 1775. Records also place this couple in Albermerle Co (parent county of Amherst). Susannah BOWLES was born ABT 1740 in Hanover Co, Va and her parents were Benjamin BOWLES and Nancy (LNU). She also had a relative of Thomas BOWLES. A newspaper obit states Ms. Susannah HUGHES died on 6 JUN 1830 in Amherst Co at the age of 102 years. I am trying to connect my William HUGHES to Susannah BOWLES to the Susannah HUGHES that died in 1830. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Vince Hughes http://www.my-ged.com/hughes/

    1. [VAALBEMA-L] Family Bible--STONE, HUNT, ARRINGTON
    2. Dear Friends Can you help us? We're looking for a family Bible that was sold at a family sale sometime after 1757. We beleive it was at a sale for the Stone, Hunt, or Arrington family. Please let us know if you are aware of such a Bible. It would have the birth date of John R. Arrington, among others. I know this is a long shot, but it sure would be great if we could find it. Thanks. Lee
