    1. Re: [VAALBEMA-L] Maplewood Cemetery, Albermarle Co., VA
    2. Joann: Maplewood is in the heart of the City of Charlottesville, Virginia within Albemarle County. It is located at the edge of downtown, near the Martha Jefferson Hospital in case you get a map <g>. The graves stones have been put in written form by the DAR, but are not sold to the public. So, I don't think anyone on the list would actually have a copy. You can get what information you need by writing to the Albemarle Historical Society, Charlottesville, Virginia, 22902. Unless a kind soul on the list would be willing to go there and do a "look-up" for you <g>. I think there is an additional copy at the University of Virginia too! Good luck! Brenda

    3. Don - None of my Glass relatives appear to have moved to Amherst, Campbell, or Bedford Counties. However, several did move to Lynchburg. For the sake of brevity, I'll list two who were living there: James Abraham Glass, Jr. - died December 11, 1991 Elizabeth Kate Glass - died November 7, 1977 If these sound familiar, I would be happy to compare notes. I'd like to be able to see which part of Buckingham was in Albemarle... and before that, in Goochland, I presume. Thanks -- any comments will be appreciated! Evelyn [email protected]

    1. Re: [VAALBEMA-L] Need Info. Pls.
    2. "....Those CD's are from private people like you and me who have been asked to submit their families so that other people can obtain the information. Like all information- some is good ; some is NOT! ...........it is less likely the appropriate documentation was put in as well. At the time I initially submitted my file- I had no idea it was going to be used for RESALE purposes or I would have done a better job at documentation. So they are CLUES- just like everything else but beware and good luck- they can help you a lot as long as you keep it in the proper perspective." That was a well-put caution. When you're a newbie all excited about locating your ancestors it is easy to regard all new information as gospel. I'm at the stage where you start to realize that you've learned nothing unless you can document it. And you have to enjoy the whole process enough to go that extra mile. I have to say that I really appreciate all the hours that people have put into making official information such as federal census data available on the web. When you think of how much time is saved in tracing information so that you just have to get offiicial copies of the data, it makes you wonder how the pre-web average person could afford to trace their family. Thank you to all who give of their time and talents for the rest of us.

    1. Re: [VAALBEMA-L] Map, Albemarle to Buckingham
    2. Hi, Buckingham Co. was created out of Albemarle in 1761. Albemarle was created from Goochland in 1744. Several months ago I purchased Atlas of County Boundary Changes in Va., 1634-1895 by Michael F. Doran. I have found this book to be very useful in sorting out when the counties were formed and reformed. I bought it on the internet from Borders.com if I remember right. Lois Smith

    1. Re: [VAALBEMA-L] ref CD's
    2. John Morris
    3. I agree with the comments made about errors or non-documented info sent to CD sources. I have found an error on one WFT with a low number and watched that error continue through 8 more pedigree's of the same surname. As one who is researching a bout a dozen names, I have come to the belief that it is more likely to be possibily not correct. Also the Family History center information, although more often you will find it documented, it also has an uncomfortable error rate. So take it as a start: but verify the direction. Also if someone points out an error or questions the accuracy: don't get mad, they might be right! John/Va

    2. Those CD's are from private people like you and me who have been asked to submit their families so that other people can obtain the information. Like all information- some is good ; some is NOT! My biggest concern about the whole process is that as soon as you have entered 400 names into the program it asks you to download and submit! Most people i have run across are so excited to have just entered the information they are happy to comply HOWEVER, when you first begin is when most mistakes are made aaaaaannndddd!!! it is less likely the appropriate documentation was put in as well. At the time I initially submitted my file- I had no idea it was going to be used for RESALE purposes or I would have done a better job at documentation. So they are CLUES- just like everything else but beware and good luck- they can help you a lot as long as you keep it in the proper perspective.

    3. Trying to find ancestor-James Willard Lawhorn. Born: 28 Feb 1834, VA. Family traditions say he was Indian (they say Cherokee but the surname does not appear on any Cherokee rolls). His daughter told me he was "bound-out" at age 8 to a Brewer family. In the 1850 census for Nelson Co., p. 222 is listed a James Lawhorn, age 17, born in Nelson Co., VA. He is listed with the Edwin M. Kirby family. This is the only James Lawhorn in the state who matches age and can't be accounted for. I believe he is my great-grandfather. There were also two teenaged girls listed as mulattos and each living with a separate family in this same census in Nelson Co. Is it possible the parents died? Anyone out there who might be able to search guardianship records, etc. I'm including more info. on James Lawhorn in case someone out there really takes an interest in helping me. Would be willing to trade for KY research. Am planning a trip to the historical society soon. Thanks, --Sheryl He was married 4 times. His second marriage was in 1871 in Pendleton Co., KY. He appears in the 1880 census in Lincoln Co., KY (next door to Casey Co. where Benjamin Bennett Lawhorn of Albermarle Co., VA settled in 1812 but he has never been connected to them). He died in Campbell Co., KY in 1921 but seems to have been in and out of the state of KY. He does not appear in the census of any other state in 1860. He is said to have driven a 20-mule-team across death valley, to have been shot by Indians and crawled for several days for help and may have married an Indian squaw out west. I'm assuming all this was before his 1871 marriage.

    2. Geraldine Miller
    3. I am wanting to find the parents of John SIMPSON b. 1800-1810 VA. He married Elizabeth BOSWELL 1834 in Albemarle Co. VA. His children are named James, William & Mary. John moved to Callaway Co. MO in 1836. John died in Callaway in 1840. The only census I find him on is the 1840 Callaway Co. MO census. He would probably be on a 1830 VA census maybe Albemarle Co. but I don't know his fathers name. Does anyone else have SIMPSON'S from the Albemarle Co. VA area?? Geraldine in MO
