    1. [VAALBEMA-L] [STANLEY-L] BOWLES, STANLEY, TRENT, LINES
    2. Dear Fellow Researchers, Does anyone know anything about an Alexander H. BOWLES m/Kathryn Goode. He was listed as living in Henry County in the 1830 Census. It is a pretty good supposition (by genealogy librarian) that he is the father of Jabel Bowles (b. 1821 in Henry County) as he was the only Bowles there when Jabel was born. Jabel married Anne Prillaman (b. 11/20/1837). She first married a Bondurant and was the daughter of Daniel Prillaman (1791-1844) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Stanley (1813-1883). "Betsy" was the daughter of John Stanley and Mary Clayton. I know where the Stanley family lived in Henry County - just can't find any information on them. I need to somehow connect Alexander H. Bowles with a Bowles line from someother location as he was apparently the first (?) in Henry County. Jabel and Anne were the parents of my grandfather, Benjamin Alexander Bowles (1877-1964), who married Della Trent (daughter of William Hicks Trent and Emma Stanley. Emma was the daughter of Swinfield Stanley and Lucinda (?). Any help on any of these people would be greatly appreciated. 2. It was a small town in Buckingham. The Anderson's lived there so it was named after them. My mother new them and went to school with some of them. This was in the 1920"s. Not sure what year but the house they lived in was near a post office. We went up not long ago and she showed me it.Buckingham was different back then. If I can get her to think more I will send you more names and you can check them out maybe they are the ones you are looking for. Bernice

    3. Oops! My husband interrupted my train of thought and I pressed the send button before I completed this post. Here goes again .... Yes, Anne has been a great help to me. In April of 1998, I began searching for my BROWN's of Albemarle Co. And, I was also trying to document the final generation of my Nicholas-Phillips line for the DAR. Anne helped me greatly in both regards. When I began searching the BROWN's last year, all I had was the name of my great grandfather, Howard BROWN. I had a difficult time finding him at first, because his real name, unbeknownst to me, was Morris Howard BROWN. In one short year, with the help of, not only Anne, but many on this list, the VAROOTS list, BROWN roots list, and many other surname lists, I was able to trace my BROWN line back to Andrew BROWN (1760-1804) of North Garden, VA. In process, I have collected many of the descendants of Andrew BROWN. And, cousins of many other connected surnames. I am still searching the origins of Andrew BROWN and his wife, whom I only know as Mary. But, I am thrilled to have come so far in such a short time. There is a old saying "Dozens of Cousins". But, I must say, that I don't have "Dozens of Cousins", I now have "Dozens of Dozens of Cousins". And, then some.... :-) Anne & I have not found that we are cousins, yet. But, who knows... If I keep digging long enough... Ya' never know.... ;-} Lonny > > ---------- > > From: [email protected] > > To: [email protected] > > Subject: Re: [VAALBEMA-L] BROWN's, MARTIN's, JOHNSON's and THURMOND's > found! > > Date: Monday, August 02, 1999 6:22 AM > > > > Sorry List > > I just sent a personal message to Lonny via VAALBEMA-L and I do > apologize. > > It is 6 am and I am not fully awake yet!!!! > > Besides, I am happy to say I helped her get started, and sorry to say I > have > > not met her........ > > Anne > > > > > > ==== VAALBEMA Mailing List ==== > > For the discussion of Genealogy and History, primarily regarding > Albemarle County > > > > ============================== > > Search more than 274 MILLION NAMES and find your ancestors at > Ancestry.com! > > Get started today at http://www.ancestry.com/rootswebtext.asp

    2. I am a Virginia HOUFF descendant. Our HOUFF family did not come to this country until late June, 1779 from Germany. They were originally from the Hesse area of Germany and our HOUFF ancestor had fought as a "Hessian" soldier during the Revolutionary War. He returned to Germany after the war and then came back to this country in 1779 and settled originally in Lancaster County. His name has been lost, however, his son Benjamin Franklin Houff was born six weeks after they came to PA on August 15, 1779. He later migrated to Augusta County, VA and that is where most or all of my family are from. I doubt that your HOUGH was this line since they were here in the 1600's, but it's possible, I guess. Good hunting. Connie
