    2. Bernice I have several James Payne's but not the one you are looking for. The only Joseph I have was born in 1790. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same family, but can't seem to find the connection at this point. Karen

    3. A couple of weeks ago messages were circulating through the list about a Davis family in Albemarle. I was wondering if they were a connection to some Davis' Ive found in my research. I have a JOHN STAIGE DAVIS professor of Law at UVA and his sister CATHERINE DAVIS who married one of my ancestors JOHN WILLIAM CLARK WATSON. John Watson studied law under John Davis and thats how he met Catherine. John and Catherine moved to Marshall Co. Miss. Im trying to trace this Davis family. If this connects to the Davis' mentioned before please advise. Here are some dates John Watson born Feb. 27, 1808 died 1890 Married Catherine Davis 1831 Moved to Mississippi 1845 Thanks in advance for any info. Julie Owens

You don't have an extra Joseph Lewis hangin' around do you? I have an old traditional story that my ancestor Joel Lewis born in Rowan in 1776 was the son of Joseph Lewis who was killed about 1779 in a fall from a "fractous" horse. From another Tradition, he was supposed to be a grandson of Robert Lewis of Belvoir OR someway closely connected to the Warner Hall bunch. I guess you know that your line is connected closely to the Warner Hall Lewises. Anyway, being close to the library in Salt Lake, you can imagine the collection of Lewis data that I have EXCEPT no Joseph!! We are carrying this line with one missing generation. Here's the twist--My Joel named his children, Joel, Martin Richmond and Green. Just real good Terrill names! I'm thinking that perhaps this Joseph, whomever he was, slipped into Rowan, made a baby with Sarah Lewis (no relation) and left! Perhaps the "Fractious Horse" was a family cover-up?? Well, thanks for reading this, hope you might have a bit of input for me. Jay

    3. Would anyone have a copy of the will book of Albemarle County for 1813-3-3? I found where William BURFORD will inventory is listed in book 5 page 291. Someone has told me that the Albemarle Courthouse in Charlottesville, Va has sent all the will books to Richmond and it would not do me any good to go there. I am just 35-40 miles from Charlottesville and was planning on going over next week, can someone tell me what they have? Thanks, Dot Harris Burford [email protected]

    3. There is one great fantastic ring-bound book with a medium soft cover and it seems to me that it wasn't a published book, but many pages, (I'd say 200-400) about the Brand Family in Albemarle, pictures and all. I don't have relatives Brand, but there is a Mary Brand who buried a Richard Pinkard in a private Bramham cemetery that I'm always hoping to find out more who this Richard Pinkard is, because I have a relative named Pinkard Bramham. I always feel this is too much of a connection to let go of, but I can't find any information about this Richard Pinkard so far. Good luck to you. 3. Hi - I'm fairly new to this list, but I subscribe to several others - I notice Albemarle is the only one where no one uses the subject area - many people use the heading with "digest" in the title when they send or reply (I've done it to show the example). Would someone please explain to me why this is done, rather than put the surnames, time frame, etc in the subject - which is required or suggested in other lists? Thank you. 1. [VAALBEMA-L] 1815 VA Landowners -- Lookup Offer
    2. Fellow Virginia Researchers: At a bookstore I ran across a wonderful three volume set of books, also available in libraries published in 1997 that I highly recommend to all of you who are stuck in the early 1800s in VA counties that have many abstracts in 1600s or 1700s and then nothing. Also it is the only source I have found that covers land records systematically across many counties later than the 1790s. It is entitled: 1815 Directory of Virginia Landowners (and Gazetteer), abstracted by Roger G. Ward, Iberian Publishing Company, Athens, Georgia. Beginning 1782 the state of Virginia, according to the introduction, required the tax commissioner in each district to record a list of the names of persons owning land or town lots, the quantity of land owned and its value and the amount of tax owed. By 1813, a brief geographic description (town, road, stream, etc) was added, and in 1814 the distance and direction from the courthouse was recorded. For the counties covered, it also notes whether the individual is a resident of another county. I have complete copies of the lists (which are alphabetized!) for Powhatan, Amelia and Prince George County. For Chesterfield I have the A's through Cunliff. For the City of Petersburg I have only A through Byrne. I would be happy to do lookups for any of you on these counties. If you have a very common last name, please give me first name(s) that you expect may be your family. Janet (Baugh) Hunter... Still searching for Archibald Bolling Baugh, who I have confirmed did own land on the James River in Powhatan in 1815...So..what was he doing in Prince George in 1820 and Amelia in 1830 (grin).

    3. Hi April, I see you listed both Davis & Wood as surnames you are chasing in Albemarle Co. I'm chasing both also. Wood names are Mittie Margaret, John Henry, William and John (John being born in the late 1700s). Davis names are Benjamin, Ira, John K., Sallie, Charity and Lewis (with dates ranging from the late 1700s to the 1800s). If any of these names sound familiar, let me know and we'll compare notes. Okay? Susan B.
