    1. [VAALBEMA] FERGUSON/GILMORE - Albemarle Co., VA
    2. Sharon Clark
    3. Hello, I have almost given up finding the parents, etc. of my Fergusons and Gilmores in Albemarle Co., VA. I descend from two GILMORE sisters, daughters of Frances "Franky" EUBANK and Joseph GILMORE of Albemarle Co., VA. Joseph was born ca 1744, and I guess he was born in Albemarle, but no proof. He wrote a codicil to his will 28 Apr 1828, and his will was proved 2 Jun 1828 Albemarle Co., VA. I am guessing that he and Franky married about 1769. None of the Gilmores in surrounding counties want to claim Joseph as one of their clan. The only possibility is a John Gilmore who lived in Albemarle earlier, but later moved to NC. Joseph lived on the south fork of Harware River, and he mentioned his land as being on the Warren Road. Their daughter Catherine "Caty" GILMORE was born 9 Mar 1773 in Albemarle and married William FERGUSON 28 Oct 1793 in Albemarle. I have that he was born before 1765, and I think I got that from the 1810 Barren Co., KY census. William died 1810/1811 in Barren Co., KY, in an area that later became Allen Co. They lived on Walnut Creek. I am almost positive that William had a brother named Daniel Ferguson who married Elizabeth Thomas, daughter of Mary JOPLIN and Ralph THOMAS. William and Daniel witnessed a couple of GILMORE girl's marriages. Surely he was related to William if he was witnessing William's in-law's weddings. I believe Daniel and his family moved to Nelson Co. I understand there was an earlier Daniel Ferguson in Albemarle and he's a possibility; he may have been killed in the American Revolution. I have an inventory, Will Book 2, Page 387, from Albemarle County, VA, for the Estate of Daniel FARGUSON, and it starts off, "We the subscribers being first sworn agreeable to an order of Albemarle Court hath appraised the Estate of Daniel Farguson, deceased, which was shewn to us November 24, 1779 as followeth." The last part states, "Albemarle April Court 1780. This Inventory and appraisement was returned to court and ordered to be recorded." Test: Hudson Martin, D. Clerk" I don't know who the appraisers were. The second page has nothing to do with the first page, which was page 387. The second page starts with John Ballard's will. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be so grateful if you would share them with me. Thank you, and have a wonderful day. Warm regards, Sharon Clark Fort Worth, TX clarksha@swbell.net

    1. [VAALBEMA] Kappes
    2. Cynthia Elschide
    3. I am new to this list and I am searching for a Peter Kappes. I learned, on another list, that the Hesse-Hanau POW's were taken to Carlotteville. Then when the threat of german/British drew near they were moved onto Winchester VA. I learned there is a possibility of them then being moved from there to Frederick MD and onto Reading PA. I am searching for Peter Kappes as I now he sold himself for indenture in 1783, but not to whom or where. He then shows up possibly in Gloucester NJ in 1801, married and a baby on the way with the name changed to Cavis. My question is does anyone on the list know if Peter Kappes stayed in the Albemarle area or if he indeed went with the rest of the Hesse Hanau Artillery unit as POW's to Winchester? Does anyone know how to trace the indentures? Thank you Cindy Elschide Northwest Indiana USA

    1. [VAALBEMA] Census questions
    2. Hi to the list Please note this was sent to Buckingham List, but I know there are knowledgeable people on this one also! OK cousins, need some help here... Question # One I vaguely remember hearing/reading that Buckingham County is not indexed in the Virginia Census Index for 1860. Does anyone have the source for this and can add more to this? If any of you are subbing to Ancestry.Com the only 1860 "hits" I get are those found on the slave schedule... Question # Two What/where/how does one locate maps that will show the census districts/townships or other geopolitical divisions for the census so that comparisions may be made over the different census. I am aware of a book by Dollarhyde that shows the county boudaries (have not seen it in many years) but don't know if this goes to any more depth than the county changes over the years. I am interested particularly in relation to Buckingham County. Question # Three Does anyone know where the dividing line was between the Northern District and the Southern District in the 1840 census for Buckingham County? Question # Four What is the relationship between the Nothern & Southern Districts (1840) and District # One and District # Two in the 1850 Census? TIA Alice in Fluvanna
