    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] JONES: Mecklenburg Co., VA and Granville Co. NC
    2. Dear List: The original research assignment did not include JONES and therefore the notes I obtained at Mecklenburg Co., VA, Granville Co., NC courthouses, and later at the state archives in Raleigh, are very incomplete. It appears to me there were several families by that name living in this area, and probably not always related. There were many estate files and wills that were not examined. With that caveat, here is a thumbnail of the JONES data that was collected. Mecklenburg County, VA: Will of Robert JONES. (From Zae Haggart Gwynn's abstract of wills), dated 21 JAN 1771, proved 8 APR 1771, recorded in Will Book 1, p. 88. Names 1. brothers John Jones, James Jones, Richard Jones and Ambrose Jones. 2. "Milly Vaughan "relationship not stated" 3. Nephew Edmond Jones son of brother James Jones 4. Nephew Robert Jones son of brother Richard Jones, (1000 acres in Halifax Co.) 5. Nephew James Jones, son of brother James Jones, 1/2 interest in land on Aaron's Creek in Granville Co., NC 6. Brother Ambrose Jones, 1/2 interest in land on Aaron's Creek in Granville Co., NC Executor: Brother John Jones Witnesses: Samuel Burks, Richard Jones, William Rudd, William Wilson. Compare this will to the will of John Jones, Sr., dated twenty years later, 27 SEP 1791, proved 9 JAN 1792 in Mecklenburg Co., VA (Will Book 3, p. 85, abstract by Gwynn): Witnessed b y John Wilburn, Peter Overby, Joseph Blanks. Sons Benjamin Jones, son James Jones, and Joseph Blanks, executors. No wife named. Names sons James, Benjamin, and John JONES. Daughters Ann BLANKS, Philadephia YANCEY, Amelia VAUGHAN, and Frances WILKINS. Granddaughters Sarah GRIFFIN and Frances GRIFFIN (433 acres). Grandsons Joseph BLANKS and John BLANKS (to them, the "Mountain Tract" containing 478 acres). >From here we move to Granville County, NC. 13 NOV 1771. James Jones Littlefield [sic, called James Jones throughout rest of deed, and signed as James James] and Ann, his wife, to Ambrose Jones, all his interest in land on Aaron's creek bequeathed to them by the will of Robert Jones "of this county" [sic] by his last will and testament containing 640 acres. Witnessed by James Yancey, Joseph Chandler and Pleasant Hart. (Recorded Nov, 1771, Deed Book I, p. 300). >From here the record is clear for Ambrose Jones and wife Catherine. Ambrose died testate in 1792 in Granville County, NC., and one of his children was Ambrose Jones (Jr.) who removed to Columbia County, GA, by 1794, and who married Mary HARRIS in 1776, daughter of Charles Harris and Sarah Allen of Granville Co., NC. Their son Gabriel Jones kept a family bible which was published by Jeannette Kelly Austin in "GEORGIA BIBLE RECORDS" (Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore: 1986). The children of Ambrose Jones (Sr.) and wife Catherine (probably Collins) were: 1. Daughter who married ----- Brassie. Had son John Brassie named as grandson in will of Ambrose Jones in 1792 and Catherine Jones in 1798. 2. James Jones 3. Stephen Jones 4. Ambrose Jones b. 23 JAN 1748; m.
