I was asked by a subscriber, whose name I accidentally deleted, why a man/person might appear on a land tax list, yet the assessment be zero. In my answer, I neglected to say that after taking possession, a land grantee usually was exempt from taxes while he was "seating" the tract, i.e., building a cabin/house and clearing or breaking some of the ground to the plow.
