    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Chesapeake Wallers -- Nottoway Co VA
    2. Good Morning Everyone, Confession Time...About a month ago, my entire "Springhill" Waller line (Stafford Co VA), collapsed when it became apparent that birth dates did not fit the picture for my Mary Waller who married Crispen Robertson Shelton 1807 in Pittsylvania Co to have been the granddaughter of George Waller & Anne Winston Carr, via their son John Waller who married Mary Polly Cooper, daughter of Thomas Cooper and Sarah Anthony. So now I am starting over from ground zero, surrounded by a plethora John Wallers in Pittsylvania Co, and recently came across some old references to Crispen Robertson Shelton's uncle Gabriel Shelton having married Mary Waller Buford (widow likely), the daughter of a MAJOR WALLER (a Somerset Co, MD, Chesapeake Waller name), who died in Nottoway Co 1793/4. The following information on this Major Waller was provided by Jan Shelton Nixon and can be found at this website http://members.xoom.com/janicekmc/ralphsr.htm: "The Will of Major Waller, written 23 Jan 1793, and probated 11 Dec 1794, in Nottoway Co., VA names wife Elizabeth Waller, his daughters, Susannah Parham (who married James Parham), MARY BUFORD, Elizabeth Ellis, Christianna Bennett, Dicey Waller, and his sons John, William, Hampton [Chesapeake Wallers have a Waller/Hampton marriage back in England], Garred, and Major Waller. An Order Book entry for the Nottoway County Court for 7 May 1796, names the following litigants: Susannah Parham GABRIEL SHELTON and MARY his wife William Ellis and Eliza his wife Richard Bennett and Christianna his wife John Waller Garred Waller-Exors of Major Waller, dec'd. VS William Waller Hampton Waller Dicey Waller- Infants and orphans of Major Waller, dec'd."." Note: Gabriel Shelton married Mary Buford June 29, 1794 in Pittsylvania Co. This looks like as good a starting place for me as anywhere, since the Sheltons preferred to marry their in-law's families & next door neighbors whenever first and second cousins weren't available (as in my own case where Crispen and Mary Waller Shelton's daughter Nancy Clark Shelton married her second cousin Moses Hurt Shelton, who himself was the son of first cousins Charles Coleman Shelton and Elizabeth Shelton). Are any of you familiar with this family? I tried unsuccessfully to find them at Carol's [Help! :-)] Rootsweb World Connect site which appears to have entered most of the linneage data from this family's basic reference: "The Chesapeakers" by Charles S. Waller, Sr. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=seajae&id=I2786. Any thoughts are much appreciated. When my recent Waller debacle occurred (I even visited the Springhill and Concord places in Stafford!), I told my cousins I just knew we were going to end up as Chesapeakers! Yes, I realize the ties go back to the same folks in England. My best regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter

    3. Janet, Members of my PACE line were friends, if not relatives, of the Sheltons in Pittsylvania Co. VA. While surfing the web a while back, I stumbled onto some Shelton history that goes back to the 1600's that may help you. Follow the four links below and you will find info on several family lines, including the Sheltons. If you have trouble finding it, let me know and I'll try another route.
