Dear Researchers, particularly of colonial Virginia, Can you help me identify Nathaniel Williams, who, in 1762, was a witness of Lunenburg Co., VA Deed Bk 7-149? The deed was from William Shelton, Albemarle Co. (grantor) to Tyree Glenn (grantee) of Lunenburg Co. Other witnesses were Smithson and Jeremiah Glen. Comments: William Shelton and Jeremiah Glen, the latter probably a kinsman of Tyree Glenn, were close associates of the Robert Harris and Mourning Glen family of colonial Louisa and Albemarle Cos., VA. Could Nathaniel Williams be a brother of Joseph Williams, who was a county official--off and on--of colonial Lunenburg Co., VA? Is there any proof? I have not found a land patent where he is a patentee. He shows up only as a neighbor in the patents of others. Brother Joseph Williams's wife was the former Henrietta Jouett, and many of these families had clustered together in the early days in Hanover Co., VA. I suspect--but cannot prove--that Nathaniel Williams, living in 1762, is son of John Williams I who died intestate ca 1735 in Hanover Co. (administration bond). I can find few records which mention Nathaniel Williams. One rent roll of Hanover Co. dated 1763 lists Nathaniel Williams, and he appears once, I believe, in an account in St. Paul's Parish. In Hanover Co., 30 years prior to 1763, Nathal. Williams and John Williams, and John Wingfield were witnesses to this deed: Hanover Co. court records 1733-1735: p. 31-32 Indentures. 1 Mar 1733 I John Matlock Senr of Hanover Co., planter, for Love and good will I bear to my loving Daughter, Mary wife to Benjamin Johnson; 50 a. in sd. Co. of Hanover... small branch called Tusocky Branch. John Matlock Senr. Wit: Nathal Williams, John Williams, John Wingfield 1 Mar 1733 ack. by John Matlock Senr. John Williams, who patented two parcels in colonial Hanover Co., is believed to be father of Nathal. Williams. Subsequently, John Matlock deeded property near Charles Swamp to his son George Matlock, same date. Same witnesses. Thanks for any info you can share with me. For newbies: Don't ask me about Williamses of later date. I do not have a Vast Database of Williamses. You are on your own!!! Sorry! E.W.Wallace PS: This is going to Harris-Hunters who are linked to Sheltons and Glen[n]s and who have many males named Tyree Harris. Also one of the daughters of Robert Harris and wife Mourning Glen[n] married John Jouett. These Jouetts are believed to be the parents of John Jouett who rode many miles during Revolutionary War days to warn Thomas Jefferson that the Tories were on their way.
