Thank you for jogging my memory concerning the children of Nathaniel Williams, probably of colonial Hanover Co., VA. You sent material which had been submitted by Hope Coslett Pees. Since Hanover Co. is a burned county, there is little information I have been able to confirm about Nathaniel Williams, reported son of John Williams the elder of colonial Hanover Co. (d. intestate ca 1735). Prior to his death, John Williams, Nathaniel's father, patented two parcels of land in Hanover Co., according to Cavaliers & Pioneers, Vol III, if I remember correctly. John and Nathaniel show up as witnesses from time to time in the few remaining records of colonial Hanover Co. Unfortunately, this seeming Bible excerpt which is quoted in your e-mail does not tell me much about the parents, Nathaniel and wife Elizabeth [?] Williams, of some of these prominent persons. It does tell me when they became parents, and seems to confirm that Nathaniel was a real person. Yes, Hope Coslett Pees, the submitter of the information you forwarded, and I have been in communication from time to time. It is wonderful that this information about the children of Nathaniel Williams has been preserved. Hope is a descendant of Nathaniel's brother, Joseph Williams, a county official at various times, in colonial Lunenburg Co., VA. He died testate in Elbert Co., GA. Yes, the sons of this Nathaniel Williams, probably of Hanover Co., VA, a burned county, mostly became rather prominent in their communities. Robert Williams is said to have resided and died in Pittsylvania Co., VA. He married his deceased cousin's widow, the former Sarah Lanier, who had previously married Joseph Williams [son of Daniel] in Granville Co., NC (details furnished on request). Here is some information about John Williams, son of Nathaniel. Some say that he is the person called Col. John Williams in Caswell Co. records. Question: Is Nathaniel Williams the father or the brother of John Williams, later known as Col. John Williams of Surry Co., NC? Nathaniel Williams MAY be the person named in a Charlotte Co., VA document as Nathaniel Williams, Jr. This man is from time to time referred to in Caswell Co., NC records as Col. John Williams. Here is some limited information about Nathaniel Williams, son of Nathaniel Williams the elder. Nathaniel Williams and his probable paternal uncle and cousin (Joseph Williams and son Matthew J. Williams) were in or adjacent to Surry Co., NC during the Revolution. Surry Co. NC. First cousin of John Williams of Montpelier [in Granville Co., NC], Richard Henderson and Thomas Henderson [both of Granville Co., NC]; brother of John Williams, Robert Williams and Joseph Williams of Shallow Ford [NC]. Born in Hanover County, VA, October 1, 1742. Accidentally drowned while trying to ford a swollen stream, in Rockingham County, NC, January 25, 1805. Burial location unknown. I have just now looked up Shallow Ford on this website and found it is in Yadkin Co., NC. Thanks for your interest in these folk of colonial Virginia. And thanks for jogging my memory. Perhaps when I am relieved of some of my volunteer and family duties, I will get to Chapel Hill and Raleigh and do some on-site research. The internet helps a good deal. E.W.Wallace (female)
