Paul Drake and others have referred to URLs of possible interest for those of probable Scots-Irish descendancy. This one pertains to the *homeland*--Northern Ireland aka Ulster. May I add this one. There is a free newsletter. Most Scots-Irish were from Ulster (six counties full of Presbyterians, of all kinds). _http://newsletter@ulsterancestry.com/_ (http://newsletter@ulsterancestry.com/) I have a couple of known Scots-Irish--with surname Miller [try to research that! especially when Presbyterians did not keep records, for fear of persecution]. Another was a lady named Agnes McCord, later Mrs. Christopher Harris, of colonial Albemarle Co., but previously of Augusta Co., VA according to some abstracts by Lyman Copeland called Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlements in Virginia--or a similar name. There is a version (three volumes) on the internet. E.W.Wallace
Rain is falling here today. Think some of it must have fallen on me wee brain.... The James Webb book about how the Socts-Irish shaped America is NOT entitled 'Fighting Back.' It is BORN FIGHTING. Sorry 'bout that.
Good monring, People. I am posting my collection of research notes & information of the Weathers/Wtihers families in chronological form on the Weathers-L@rootsweb.com and Withers-L@rootsweb.com for the use of others. These are in segments, 6 already completed beginning in the 1500s, that can be found in the archives of those lists. The information includes MANY names that were associated with the the families above.....in patents, church records, deeds, marriages, chrisrtenings with godparents, wills .... and FROM THE COUNTIES OF SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA & the NORTHERN NECK. The records will continue until approximately 1800. With the hope that you find them helpful...... Best wishes, Sarah Withers Keesee lydiap@salisbury.net .
Paul, thank you for the Scots site. I anticipate spending hours in it. Some on the list might not be familiar with a book....FIGHTING BACK by James Webb How the Scots-Irish Shaped America. All who have roots in the Appalachian region should read this! Pugnacious and proud? You betcha!

Pam wrote: I'm researching the Winn, White and Atkins family of Mecklenburg, Virginia and not getting very far. Wondering if there is anyone else researching these same families? Pam Suggestion: Go to _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) Look for the link on the lower right side for the FHL Catalog. Do a place search. See when Mecklenburg Co. was formed and what the parent county was. I believe it was formed from Lunenburg Co., which I believe was formed from Brunswick Co. Furthermore, I find my folks in Granville Co., NC (colonial era and beyond) hopped across the state line from time to time to conduct business or to visit family or to acquire land, and you may find your folks in that area!!! According to NC genealogists, few North Carolinians came in by ship, as the barrier islands prevented ships from having a safe landing. (I hope you have some maps.) North Carolinians, in many cases, came from Virginia (or Maryland) and later from everywhere, including Pennsylvania. In other words, you may have to do what some genealogists call *a radial search*--you have to radiate out from Mecklenburg. I was advised early in my genealogical hobby to search for Virginians in EVERY county. I thought the lecturer was nuts--until I started looking for my colonial familes!!! Landon C. Bell wrote a fair number of books on old Lunenburg Co. [do an author search on the FHL catalog] and some of his works may have been filmed--or the books may be in a library near you. Note the name of his books, and ask your librarian about interlibrary loan--if you cannot easily borrow the film through your LDS family history center. I am assuming you are referring to colonial families. If they are of later date, then you will have to use censuses as well as tax lists, court records, deeds [I love deeds--I find more family relationships in deeds], probates, family histories. Also look in counties beyond Mecklenburg--as several counties were formed from that area. Good luck!!! Genealogists have to really stretch their thinking ability and remember that not only did people migrate but the county boundaries changed (and in Virginia and its sister state Kentucky and its neighbor North Carolina this was always happening. Don't even talk about South Carolina where the names were always changing and where colonial records seem to be almost non-existent.) E.W.Wallace

There was this post on the list in the last few days, and I have something to add to it. From: "Doris R. Ryan" _drryan@bellsouth.net_ (mailto:drryan@bellsouth.net) If the person who was recently looking for Tuder/Tudor ancs. will contact me off-list, I may have a bit of helpful info My added remark: I recently e-mail corresponded with a man (genealogist, amateur, I assume, like myself) who bears the name Tudor. He lives in eastern Kentucky. He might add to your store of knowledge. E.W.Wallace

Hi, I have been researching some families who seem to be in the Brunswick Co. records, and also Prince George Co. I would like to see a map of that area before Brunswick Co. was created. I know it was created from Prince George Co., Isle of Wight, and Surry. I am trying to place someone who shows up in the Brunswick Co. records, in an area that might have been Prince George earlier. Does anyone have some sort of link to a map like that? Thanks. Sue
