Would you be interested in posting the Granville Co., NC will of Ambrose Jones (brother of the Robert who d. in 1771 and the John Jones Sr. who d. 1791/92)? I have a full transcript of both his will and an abstract of his estate file that I made. I realize it is not Mecklenburg County but then it is very difficult to seperate the research of the two counties. Also, I am told that there were brothers John, James, Robert, Richard and Ambrose Jones, all sons of an elusive Robert Jones supposedly born in 1690. Do you know if this true? The evidence for this statement is rather flimsy, but is quoted below for what it's worth: (Dorothy Renaud kindly sent me this, and all acknowledgment is to her for sharing it): [The Heritage of Person Co., NC. -Vol. II (1983)]: "The first ancestor of Avonia (Jones Parham) was Thomas Jones who came to the Colonies in the early 1600's from Wales. The next was Richard Jones born in 1660 in Virginia. Robert, his son was born in 1690. To Robert was born Robert Jr., who remained single, living in Mecklenburg Co., Va." Author of bio: Ruth Parham Gravitt. Avonia was a descendant of Ambrose Sr. This is all the info I have on the above article.” Kindest Regards, Craig Kilby

I'd recommend you try to get the original if you are still interested in it, though it seems this John Jones grandfather of Sarah Griffin is not your John Jones. Also request an estate file for John Jones if you want to pursue this line. Wills and estate files are archived seperately, so this will be two requests. I was there a few weeks ago and I overheard one of the librarians tell someone on the phone that the backlog for copying orders is about six weeks. For a small fee, you could probably find a local researcher to get you the copies much quicker. Much luck to you, Craig Kilby St. Louis, MO

Hi Joyce, The transcribed will of John JONES, Sr. as well as that of Benjamin JONES, Sr., his son, can be found at the Mecklenburg GenWeb page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~vameckle/wills2.htm > I believe the Sarah Griffin mentioned is my gggg-grandmother, > daughter of John Griffin and Martha Jones. Sarah GRIFFIN, the granddaughter mentioned in this will, was the dau. of Francis GRIFFIN and Philadelphia JONES, dau. of John Sr.. Francis was her 1st husband who d. 1765; Philadelphia then m. Robert YANCEY. She had 3 children by 1st m. and 11 by 2nd. I have no other info on Sarah GRIFFIN. I just recently was able to come up with a good transcription of the will of Robert JONES who d. in Mecklenburg Co. in 1771. The copy was poor and several people have worked on this. I will send this to the Mecklenburg site soon. Best wishes, Ron Jones

My first querie is why would a Mecklenburg will be recorded in Granville, NC. I realize the two counties are side by side. And I realize many Virginian's migrated to Granville, NC. Is there some other significance other than their proximity to each other. The main reason for my questioning is that I have some ancestors who were from Dinwiddie Co., VA who moved to Granville, NC and had their children. Within 17 years of the first child's birth, they were back in Lunenburg, VA. I'm wondering if there's some significance to this that I'm missing. The husband and wife were both born in Dinwiddie in the late 1700s (1777ish). The children were all born in the very early 1800s (1804-1821). Then they all migrated back North to Lunenburg by the 1820s and 1830s. They scattered through out Charlotte, Nottoway, Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties. Maybe there's not siginificance to this other than wandering migrators. But I thought it was worth asking others about. See if there's more to it than I know. -- Cara (Gregory) Showers Anchorage, Alaska cara@dcdesign.com

Does this list include "the part of the District of Columbia that later reverted to the state of Virginia"..., e.g. Alexandria? Sorry, but I am weak on VA geography other than the Eastern Shore area. Thanks for your understanding. Tom
My paternal grandmother was Pansy EVANS born in Western, Ottertail County, MN in 1884. Pansys parents were: William B.C. EVANS and Dorcas CROSBY married in New Auburn, McLeod County, MN in 1867. They had 12 children: Wallace, Harry, George, Roy, Fred, William, Carl, Robert, Pearl, Pansy, Lee, and Daisy. They were all born in MN. The generations before William B.C. EVANS are quite a challenge to research. Evidently, William never mentioned his parents to his children. We have found that his father was Wright EVANS born in 1813 in Chesterfield County, VA. Wright is located in Baltimore, MD in the 1840 census, his wife was Margaret, and son William was born in Baltimore, MD in 1842. Wright died in 1845 and is buried in Blandford Cemetery, Dinwiddie County, VA. Shortly after Wrights death, Williams grandmother (not sure if that is maternal or paternal) relocated to MN where William grew up. We have not been able to locate his mother. Wright EVANS parents were Isham and Elizabeth EVANS. I found an Isham EVANS in the 1830 and 1840 Dinwiddie County, VA census records, but have been able to find no other information about him. Dear friends, cousins and fellow researchers, In Huntsville, AL we have a huge cemetery called, Maple Hill, where over 15,000 are buried. Each year the Pilgrimage Association sponsors the 'Cemetery Stroll' and the 'Spirits' come alive and stand at their grave and greet visitors and tell about themselves. Well, this year I portrayed Virginia Shepherd Cabaniss who married Septimus D. Cabaniss a lawyer, who was born December 18, 1815 in Montgomery County, AL. His parents were from Lunenburg County, VA and they located near Huntsville in 1810. Septimus was educated at Green Academy and the University of Virginia. His father was Charles Cabaniss who built the first Cotton Gin and mill in Madison County. Septimus married Virginia Shepherd. Her maternal grandparents was Daniel and Annie (Ainsworth) Eversole who lived in Fauquier County, VA, who was of Dutch Ancestry. I don't remember seeing this name on our LIST, but if anyone would like information on either of these families, CABANISS OR SHEPHERD, just let me know. Regards, Margaret
Hello Frances and interested list members, I recently was reviewing some of my old genealogy notes, and found that Robert Payne was identified as being a silversmith, when a young man, aged fifteen, was apprenticed to Robert to "learn the art and mystery of silversmithing" in the Caswell County Court Records. Later on, Robert was found to be commissioned to make a county seal for the county of Caswell" I am not sure if John Payne mentioned in my previous message was a brother to Robert or not, but were he a brother, chances are that he could have practiced the same profession in Caswell County, NC. I found mention of him in old family papers that were kept by my gr-gr-aunt in the mid-late 1800's. I have no idea what her source was or how reliable her information was. But for whatever it's worth..... Her notes state that he was from England and a cousin of the Earl of Granville who promised him land if he'd come to America with "his" daughters and a Mr Jones. I don't know who the "his" was referring to. According to Person County Heritage, John Payne's wife was Susanna Satterwhite whom he married 2/11/1769 in Granville Co. Their daughter Anne Payne m Jesse Carter Jr d 1815 Caswell Co. Their son John Payne Carter m 1821 Cornelia Ann Murphey, daughter of Judge Archibald DeBow Murphey. They were the grandparents of my gr-gr-aunt who kept these notes. A Susan Satterwhite was also the first wife of Jesse Carter Sr and the mother of Jesse Carter Jr who m Anne Payne. This from a book by Joseph Miller about the descendants of Capt Thomas Carter. I have never found anything to explain any kinship between Susanna Satterwhite and Susan Satterwhite. I don't have any information concerning the parents of either. I would certainly suggest checking whatever records are available to try to verify these connections. I have seen many books with errors and can't guarantee that this information is accurate since this is not a family that I've tried to document myself. >>

Dear List: The original research assignment did not include JONES and therefore the notes I obtained at Mecklenburg Co., VA, Granville Co., NC courthouses, and later at the state archives in Raleigh, are very incomplete. It appears to me there were several families by that name living in this area, and probably not always related. There were many estate files and wills that were not examined. With that caveat, here is a thumbnail of the JONES data that was collected. Mecklenburg County, VA: Will of Robert JONES. (From Zae Haggart Gwynn's abstract of wills), dated 21 JAN 1771, proved 8 APR 1771, recorded in Will Book 1, p. 88. Names 1. brothers John Jones, James Jones, Richard Jones and Ambrose Jones. 2. "Milly Vaughan "relationship not stated" 3. Nephew Edmond Jones son of brother James Jones 4. Nephew Robert Jones son of brother Richard Jones, (1000 acres in Halifax Co.) 5. Nephew James Jones, son of brother James Jones, 1/2 interest in land on Aaron's Creek in Granville Co., NC 6. Brother Ambrose Jones, 1/2 interest in land on Aaron's Creek in Granville Co., NC Executor: Brother John Jones Witnesses: Samuel Burks, Richard Jones, William Rudd, William Wilson. Compare this will to the will of John Jones, Sr., dated twenty years later, 27 SEP 1791, proved 9 JAN 1792 in Mecklenburg Co., VA (Will Book 3, p. 85, abstract by Gwynn): Witnessed b y John Wilburn, Peter Overby, Joseph Blanks. Sons Benjamin Jones, son James Jones, and Joseph Blanks, executors. No wife named. Names sons James, Benjamin, and John JONES. Daughters Ann BLANKS, Philadephia YANCEY, Amelia VAUGHAN, and Frances WILKINS. Granddaughters Sarah GRIFFIN and Frances GRIFFIN (433 acres). Grandsons Joseph BLANKS and John BLANKS (to them, the "Mountain Tract" containing 478 acres). >From here we move to Granville County, NC. 13 NOV 1771. James Jones Littlefield [sic, called James Jones throughout rest of deed, and signed as James James] and Ann, his wife, to Ambrose Jones, all his interest in land on Aaron's creek bequeathed to them by the will of Robert Jones "of this county" [sic] by his last will and testament containing 640 acres. Witnessed by James Yancey, Joseph Chandler and Pleasant Hart. (Recorded Nov, 1771, Deed Book I, p. 300). >From here the record is clear for Ambrose Jones and wife Catherine. Ambrose died testate in 1792 in Granville County, NC., and one of his children was Ambrose Jones (Jr.) who removed to Columbia County, GA, by 1794, and who married Mary HARRIS in 1776, daughter of Charles Harris and Sarah Allen of Granville Co., NC. Their son Gabriel Jones kept a family bible which was published by Jeannette Kelly Austin in "GEORGIA BIBLE RECORDS" (Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore: 1986). The children of Ambrose Jones (Sr.) and wife Catherine (probably Collins) were: 1. Daughter who married ----- Brassie. Had son John Brassie named as grandson in will of Ambrose Jones in 1792 and Catherine Jones in 1798. 2. James Jones 3. Stephen Jones 4. Ambrose Jones b. 23 JAN 1748; m. Mary HARRIS on 17 OCT 1776 (daughter of Charles Harris and Sarah Allen). d. Columbia Co., GA on 18 AUG 1808, testate. 5. Reubin Jones 6. Gabriel Jones 7. Elizabeth Jones m. James WINFREE 8. Ann Jones m. Robert SANDFORD 9. Phebe Jones m. 1) Benjamin HAWKINS who died 1782/1783 and 2) Thomas GREGORY 10. Peggy Jones m. William DAVIE Craig Kilby St. Louis, MO
I wonder who Sallie Cralle's ancestors were. Since she named one son Kenner and one Opie, I assume she is related to William Matthew Cralle (1739) and Anne Opie; however this is just conjecture on my part. I also wonder about William and Sallie's son, Hiram, and his wife Jane Brooks Bradshaw. Who were Jane's ancestors? Olin Richmond
These other Draper notes: Mary Draper m. Thomas Cox, bond dated 7 March 1796, m. 8 March 1796 by William Creath. Thomas Pritchett, security. Sarah Draper m. David HUDSON, bond dated 3 DEC 1789, m. 5 DEC 1789 by Edward Almond, John Hudson security. This Sarah Draper is obviously the daughter of Joshua Draper whose will of 3 March 1791 names son-in-law DAVID HUDSON but leaves land to his daughter Sarah DRAPER. The Mary Draper named in the same will may be the Mary who married Thomas Cox in 1796. John Fox may have more information on the Draper family than these meager notes. Craig Kilby
Some more miscellaneous notes from recent Mecklenburg VA/Granville NC trip. Will of Joshua Draper, St. James Parish, Mecklenburg Co., VA. Dated 3 March 1791, proved 9 January 1792. Witnessed by John Chamberlain, John Duncan, Martha Rudd, John Easter, and Clausel Clausel. Son-in-law David Hudson and daughter Mary Draper, executors. Legatees: Grandsons Joshua & Bryant Draper, sons of son Stephen Draper, 100 acres of land where son Stephen now lives, divided equally. Daughter mary Draper, plantation whereon I now live, 100 acres, and upon her death to grandson Thomas Draper. Daughter Sarah Draper. land on South side of Finnawood Road, 100 acres, and a featherbed. Granddaughter Susannah Draper, daughter of daughter Sarah Draper, a bed. Granddaughter 'whose name is unknown to me", daughter of my late daughter Judith SAMPSON. SON Stephen Draper, 20 shillings Remainder of estate, 1/3 to the four children of my son Stephen, who are Joshua, Bryant, Elizabeth and Mary Draper; 1/3 to daughter Mary Draper, and 1/3 to daughter Sarah Draper.
