I know there are a lot of BASKERVILLE's in Mecklenburg Co and other counties close by, but cannot find a Sarah that would have been born between 1720 and 1750. Any help would be appreciated. Kathy Awbrey >> There are many Baskervylles in York Co VA records in the late 1600s. Since that is blessedly not a burned county, you might try looking there. They are associated with my Underhills and Hydes there at that time. A significant number of pre-1700 court records have been transcribed by a Mr. Dorman (I forget his whole name), including sad to say the defamation suit of my many g's grandparents Robert Hyde and Jane Underhill against a Joanne Delaney who apparently, according to several depositions, called Jane a whore, a bitch, chased her down on her horse on the way to church, threatened to slice her nose off to mark her, accused her of lying with her husband (well just about anybody for that matter) and her father-in-law, getting a potion from said father-in-law to get rid of a resulting child by father-in-law, etc., etc., All transcribed for our enjoyment!! FYI soon after the defamation case, which Robert & Jane won, got 500 lbs of tobacco (were asking for 10,000) Robert it seems beat Jane up and kicked her out of the house as there is a case between them soon after where a church warden takes up Jane's cause and Robert promises to let her back in the house, to see her children, and to leave her without molestation. Another example of just what you might get when you aren't dealing with a burned county. Best Regards, Janet Hunter

I need help here, however we do know that a chapel of that name was in place from prior to 1762 to early in the 20th century just west of "Drakes Crossroads" (present day S'hampton County Rds. #640 & #653). In addition, there appears to have been another so named in the "Upper Parish" of Nansemond County, that church in existence at an earlier time. ("Vestry Book Of Upper Parish, Nansemond County, pp. liv, 124, and Index generally). Anybody have something to add?

In one Census he is listed as a farmer and another as a wheelwright. I know he owned land. I am curious about the various Districts that we encounter that are on the Census. Could someone familiar with the various Districts, such as Lewiston District, describe the demographics and the topography of each District if it would not be to much of a problem? Of course, I am especially interested in Lewiston, but it will assist my minds view of our ancestors home if we could view these characteristics about all the Districts. Thank you for your kind gift of time. Regards, Margaret Driskill mdriskill@att.net

    3. I hope it has quieted down enough on here for me to ask a question. I think I have a good idea where this place may be, but need some clarification to settle my mind. <g> During the final days of the Civil War, my grgrandfather was shot in the back at "Five Forks" and his CW papers says he was admitted to "Point of Rocks, Va." hospital. The nearest place (to Five Forks) called Point of Rocks is designated as a "cliff" beyond the town of Hopewell (USGS Mapping Info). Am I on the right track to assume that there may have been a "field hospital" somewhere between Hopewell and this cliff referred to as Point of Rocks, Va.??? I haven't found any other place by this name other than a "bluff" above Winchester, which is not in this particular area. Any help greatly appreciated. Jane G.

    3. Whenever anyone on the List makes a false statement about any topic, it is appropriate that they be politely corrected. I want to thank Mignon and Margaret for politely correcting the false statement that Catholics and similar traditonal Christian Churches believed that unbaptized babies would burn in Hell if they died in infancy. Religion is an important part of genealogical study because many of our ancestors came to this country to practice their religions more freely while they were pursuing new economic opportunities. We all want to learn who our ancestors were and what they stood for. When they are misrepresented, we naturally want to make corrections. We can all learn from these discussions. Now, lets move on and please let us keep our discussions polite. Janice Branch Fox

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Positive Thoughts
    2. Hello List, I just recently rejoined this list as I found several voids in my research which needed some attention. My reason for returning was that I found such an intensity of interest in the history of the places and people who have lived and been a part of the life of southside Virgina and northern North Carolina. We have all benefited from each others' efforts, and we have shared in the contributions made to this list. Paul and Cash certainly represent many of us, in their concern for accuracy and thoroughness in genealogical and historical research. The early farmers who tossed their grains up to the wind to remove the chaft from the main kernels, should give us an example to follow when we pursue sharing ideas on this list. Take what is good, and let the rest pass on the wind, and move on with our work. Paul and Cash have both served us well, and hopefully will continue to do so, as many others have done on this list, through their deligent research, by the seat of their britches, in the archival halls, the clerk of court offices, and other repositories of genealogical and historical information, and have passed this effort along for many to share. My feelings are that we do not pit one person against another over petty issues, but remember what we are all about here, and support everyone for their contributions to this list, and to the establishment of as true a picture of our people and their history as we can. Please, let's get on with our good work. Best regards, John Fox Winston-Salem, NC
