I can not help but believe that the word "Fiels" is a corruption or misinterpretation of the letters written in the original document. A bed usually was listed with what went with it - the "furniture"; in this case there was a "cover" which means the thin-in-summer, thick-in-winter bonnet or top that stretched between the 4 posts and served above the bed and side curtains to keep bugs out in summer and heat in during winters. Because a cover was included, almost surely it was a 4 poster bed, however what word has been thought to be "fiels" is not known to me. I am with Margaret about the walnut table; hard to imagine that in those times walnut was a very coomon wood and was EVERYWHERE. ----- Original Message ----- From: <jleehunt1@aol.com> > "To 1 old Fiels Bedstead and > cover 7/6"
Hello Everyone, I was reviewing my little collection of Filmer Wills in the UK 1600s (of interest not only to us Faulkners/Fortners of Talbott/Queene Ann's MD, but some VA Greens, Barhams, Sheltons, Clays, etc.), and amongst them were two inventories that both included a valuation for "For wheate uppon ye grounds". (Grains, etc. in "barne" are mentioned separately.) I hadn't seen this before in Virginia or MD inventories (but I haven't looked at that many 1600s inventories in MD or VA). Was it common to include crops still growing here also? I paste in the entire inventory below. I haven't really read it in a while, and I think I got a headache when I did :-). I'm sure there are all sorts of other items to be figured out below as well. But I did remember the crops in the ground clause and have been meaning to ask for some time. Hello Everyone, In making sure I have all my Hyde references, I went through the genweb archives and found Inventory &c of the estate of Henry Maynard decdan, 1726 Prince George Co, with the following reference (and this is NOT a summary of estate sale purchasers): To 1 Hyde Bestead & Cord 12/. Does anyone have any idea what that would be. I tried to do a search and came up empty. Best Regards, Janet Hunter

It was very common on both sides of the Atlantic - then and now - to sell crops growing on the land being sold. When, instead, such crops were reserved by the seller, there was quite usually a provision that such seller re-enter the land at harvest times in order that the crops be taken off. Paul
Hi Janet. As mentioned previously, my best guess is that the word "Hyde" means "hide," as in "hideable" (but NOT what we now call a "hideaway bed"). It was a rope-bed frame ("bedstead" with pegs for rope to take the place of any form of mattress) with legs that folded up alongside the frame, and sometimes with the frame itself folding in half. Such were foldable for easy storage standing up on end or under another piece of furniture, such as a couch/sofa. Paul ----- Original Message ----- From: <jleehunt1@aol.com> What is a Hyde Bedstead?

Good evening, Well! I'm overwhelmed. Seems like everybody wants a set of the books....I didn't think there would be that much interest in them so late in the proverbial day. As I said, I only have a handful of volume one. Therefore, if you are ordering a set, PLEASE tell me: 1) if you would be willing to take only vol. 2 (with an appropriate refund check), and 2) if you would like to put your name and e-address on a list for possible reprint of volume one. If I get loads of requests for volume 1 to be reprinted, I'll look into making arrangements for that. P.S. I have made arrangements with Susan D. Jones of the Southside Virginia Genealogical Society for her to post cemeteries from my book on their website, eventually, as their members get around to updating my original cemetery surveys. Eventually, volume one will probably be available on-line through their website...but probably not for a good long while yet. This way, folks who have new cemeteries (ones I did not survey) or other new information can share. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Good evening, In cleaning house, A Press of Greenville, S.C., found two boxes of my Halifax Co., Va., cemetery books (published in 1984-85). Judging from the tattered state of the copies at the Halifax and South Boston public libraries, many of you know these books already. They have been more or less out of print for some years. I have just received the books from A Press and will sell the remaining copies on a first-come, first-serve basis. The price will be $18 each postpaid, or $32 for both. Send checks to G.C. Waldrep III, 7230 Strawberry Road, Summerfield, NC 27358. Inquiries via e-mail OK, though I'm afraid I can't "reserve" copies in advance of payment. As of this moment I have 7 copies of volume 1 and 52 copies of volume 2. I'll take this opportunity to thank all of you who have gone to the effort to locate me these past few years--since I left South Boston--and tell me how much these books helped in your research. I enjoyed compiling them and only wish someone would work on a third volume. About half the African-American cemeteries in Halifax remain uncatalogued, as well as several dozen family cemeteries, especially in the county's northwestern quadrant. Since I no longer live in the county, I'm afraid I won't be the one to complete this important work. Best wishes to all. G.C. I am getting ready to travel to Richmond to see what I can find on my line of Staples. Do any of you have relatives that match mine? My gg grandfather was Thomas Hamilton Staples and his 2nd wife was Jane Jeffress McCutcheon. Their children were Servitus Adison Staples, James Thomas Staples, Egbert Alexander Staples and my ggrandfather Melancthon Luther Staples, who married 1st, Mary Cornelia Wall and 2nd Ella Lee . My grandfather was Melancthon Luther Jr.. I believe that he was born in Lunenburg, Oct.23, 1880. Is anyone out there connected to these brothers or have information that would help me? Thanks, Susan hickoryfarms@ellijay.com

Just so you all know, they found descendants of those folks within about two days of their discovery, and they graves have been moved to a nearby cemetery with Holloways. (FYI, I am on several lists in the area, as that is where all of my ancestors, with one group of 1880 laggards, were by the 1850s, the Ozarks). Since the most widely publicized announcement was in Greenfield, MO (a ways away from Kansas City actually), our lists down there passed it quickly. Janet (Baugh) Hunter
