Perhaps how today people name daughters Polly, but it is also a nickname for Mary, but is not considered as such now.

    2. Teresa
    3. Hello, There used to be a site that collects Bible records and puts them online called Lefleur Genealogical Archives. In searching for it on the internet, I found links to it posted on pages all over the internet. The problem is that when I go to the site there is an "adults only" site at that URL instead. Does anyone know of a new (and G rated ) URL for the Lefleur Archives ? Thanks. 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Halifax Co. Va Cemeteries.
    2. Greetings, I have vols. 1 and 2 of George Calvin Waldreps "Halifax County (Virginia) Cemeteries." These 2 vols. contain the names and locations of over 300 cemeteries located in Halifax County Virginia. The books contain inscriptions from gravestones found in these 300 plus graveyards. Information containing surname, given name, date of birth, date of death, etc., was copied from the graves Mr. Waldrep stated in Vol. 2 that he had info on about 80 more cemeteries in Halifax Co, that he did not get to cover, so these two books do not cover all cemeteries in Halifax Co Va. ------------------------------------ I also have a booklet : "Tombstone Inscriptions taken from Private Cemeteries In Halifax County, Virginia vol. 1" Compiled by Kenneth Harvey Cook. the date on the booklet is November 1969. The booklet is 40 pages long, and contains info on about 54 cemeteries. The cemeteries tend to be small. In this booklet, I found about 9 cemeteries not covered in George Calvin Waldreb IIIs "Halifax Co. (VA) Cemeteries" books. I will do surname lookups. In order to not clog up this list for those not interested, I will not answer requests posted to this list. Please, send your requests to me at: lchand3835@aol.com Larry

Teresa >> Hi Teresa, If no other adult is available, youngsters could be called into service for witnessing and viewing bodies for inquest. If adults were available, no use of younger people would made; there were almost always older people available, especially around court houses, churches stores and other public buildings.

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Age on Petitions
    2. Robert B. Stafford
    3. Teresa, I assume that you are talking about public petitions to the legislature, governor or king. Sometimes the body of the petition will tell you, e.g., it may something like we, the taxpayers or freeholders. I haven't read anything about petitions at the time you mention. However, they is some information on the practices at a later time in VA. I have seen contradictory statements on the age question. One source said that anyone could sign a petition to the VA legislature. The Library of Congress site said only those over 21. However, it is clear that minors did sign the the Baptist petitions (such as The Ten-thousand Name Petition) in the 1780s. This is documented by an Episcopalian's complaint that the Baptists were letting "infants" (i.e., minors) sign their petitions. I interpreted that to mean that it was not the previous custom, but that it was allowed. It cannot assume that the signatures on public petitions are actually those of the persons named. Anyone could sign a petition for another if he received permission. However, the public petitions were generally statements of opinion on public matters. There were often opposing petitions. If someone included minors, it might discredit the petition in the eyes of the recipients. Since the recipients were the ones who made the laws, I assume they could accept or reject any petition they wanted to, depending on the political circumstances. The petitions were somewhat equivalent to polls today. Legislation might be put off to test public opinion with them.

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Free database at Ancestry.com
    2. Margaret Driskill
    3. Since the first settlers landed in Jamestown in 1607, Virginia was largely a military colony and remained such for many years. This database is a listing of men who served in the colonial militia from those early years as a mere settlement up until the early 1770s. It was compiled in 1913 from sources available to the author in the Virginia State Library. Researchers will find the name of soldier and the reference in the original work where the record was found. Containing the names of over 6000 men, it can be an extremely helpful resource for those seeking colonial Virginia ancestors. http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/inddbs/4006.htm

    2. Paul Drake
    3. Could have signed the petition, but the signature would have had no legal effect, and a 17 year old might well have been asked to view a body. If, however, he "vew'd the body" as in an autopsy or coroner's inquest for the purpose of making a determination as to some aspect of that death, he would have been 21. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Teresa" <tshands@lv.rmci.net> To: <VA-SOUTHSIDE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 29, 2001 12:33 AM Subject: [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Age question - Surry Co 1650s > Hello, > Hope someone can answer this for me: > In 1652 Surry Co VA , would a boy 17 or under have been signing a > petition ? 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Location of "Hollow Road" in southeastern Patrick County, Va.
    2. In the earliest Patrick Co. Order Book the County Court worked to establish roads most leading to the new county seat. in 1792-93 one of these roads was created when the court directed a road from Samuel Corns [Corn's] path out of the Hollow Road to Hughes Road. The earliest map of the area that I have is 1821 and it shows a road from Hugh's Tanyard [near Hughesville] northwest to Russell Creek near Sam Corn's place. But where in this area was "Hollow Road" located? Larry

    3. Barbara, I think that I have seen your Newsoms on charts which are on web pages. I will find those charts and get back to you. Paul, Thank you for the reminder about Newsom's Station. I have seen it on maps but do not know how my line is connected to it and have never been there. Is it noted for anything special? Many thanks to Ann for doing the census look-up. Now for the first time I know the names of my gr gr grandparents were John A. and Elizabeth M. Newsom. John was born either 1824 or 1804, and Elizabeth 1824. If anyone out there has these Newsoms on a chart, I would appreciate hearing from you. Janice Branch Fox
