Lloyd, Try this URL to subscribe to the LVA's list. I know about a year ago they changed their URLs. http://listlva.lib.va.us/archives/va-roots.html Best Regards, Janet (Baugh) Hunter.....Back from vacation
Hello, Of interest to the whole list, this link tells which VA counties have the suffered the greatest losses of county records thru fires and war, etc. http://freenet.vcu.edu/sigs/genealogy/burn-co.txt Unfortunately, Nansemond Co had three fires and early records are scarce to none. You might check the Library of VA site. I found some of my Lassiter family from Nansemond in the Digital Collection: "Land Office Patents & Grants/Northern Neck Grants & Surveys" http://www.lva.lib.va.us/ The link below is for the Genealogy Bookshop where you can find two books with records from that county: "Bible Records of Suffolk and Nansemond County, Virginia, Together with Other Statistical Data" and "The Vestry Book of the Upper Parish, Nansemond County, Virginia, 1743-1793" http://www.genealogybookshop.com/ I know its not much, but I hope it helps. Good Luck in your search. Teresa hostess http://gennetwork.org
Do anyone know what happen to the VA-ROOTS forum sponsored by The Library of Virginia? I have tried for two weeks to resubscribe after changing my username, but the e-mails keep bouncing back. The address to subscribe used to be listserver@vsla.edu at least I think so. That is what I had in my address book. Lloyd L. Hite
Greetings, due to an apparent lack of interest, I see no reason to continue the posting of the names and locations of Halifax County, Va Cemeteries . The idea was to develop better directions for those wishing to locate/find the cemeteries. Larry
I have been asked for a definition: Simply stated, a "jurat" is that ages-old expression placed at the end of a sworn statement, document or affidavit by the officer who administered the oath. Those usually read "Sworn to before me this ___ day of ______, 18__. Teste _____name of officer _______". Notice that there often are slight variations to the wording.
I may be very dense, but I went there and never found the place to request a look-up.....is there a special place? 21, by law, Robert, since they were required to give oathes as to the accuracy and honesty of their work results. I do, however, believe that the rule was not always enforced as to chain bearers, though it was for surveyors. Paul ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert B. Now Available FREE DAR PATRIOT LOOKUP SERVICE Do you think you have a Revolutionary patriot (male or female) in your family tree? The DAR will search their database of proven Revolutionary patriots free of charge. This service is available at www.dar.org Enjoy, Margaret
Does anyone know if there was a minimum age for chain bearers and surveyors in VA and NC?
Margaret is surely correct. In fact, though not here, in Britain (from whence our legal system largely was derived), the document bearing the wife's consent was very formal, elaborate and complete.
