    3. We all know of the diligence and sincerity of the Society, the local officals of the county and of all sincere historians and genealogoists, and I recall NO comment that has in any way been critical of any of those fine folks. Moreover, as have many, many others, I too have used and enjoyed the Order Books and surely the fine abstracts of those great books by Ms. Haun. The problem is that the Loose Papers - not the order books - are not open to the public and have not been for the 20 plus years that I have known of those and visited there for research. I personally have offered time and SOME money for that purpose and do so again here and now. Since the county has neither the funds nor the staff to accomplish this vital task, I say again that we should gain permission of the county for select individuals - the Society folks would be fine - to work with those records, and then see if any of us would undertake work or help to finance the photographing in order that the Society, Ms. Haun or someone of equal experience, knowledge and care will do the abstracting for whatever gain it, she or whoever might enjoy. If there are present plans or another way to gain abstracts or film for those of us at a distance, I and many others would like to hear of such. Paul Drake

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Loose Papers.
    2. Paul Drake
    3. I have spoken by phone with Ms. Weynette Haun (she does not do email). As MANY of you know, she is eminently qualified to abstract the Loose Papers at Surry, and she has indicated an interest in investigating that matter with us. Such an effort would be to the greatest benefit to all of us and equally for those who come after. If some of you who are there and know the new Clerk, Dennis Hudgins, Eve, Bruce, and etc. would gain permission from the county to film those many treasures, if need be, I would undertake/attempt to locate someone - Steve and Yvonne? - who might do that photography for this effort. While many of us have spent years reading such early writings, Mrs. Haun has done thousands of hours of it and has published now 10 or more -many - fine books of such abstracts. What say, Guys and Gals. Paul

    2. Greetings, I want to thank the many of you who e-mailed me with encouragement. After much thought however, I have decided that posting the names and locations of Halifax Co. VA Cemeteries was a bad idea on my part. That idea is now dead and finished. I will continue to furnish Cemetery Surname lookups to those who request them. Upon request I will provide only Cemetery names and locations connected with specific first and last names in the books. Larry

    3. We have received hundreds of thank yous and they all mean a lot to us. We appreciate your feedback. Paul and Margaret, as respected longstanding contributers of these lists, we really appreciate your feedback. We are not as fast as we would like to be with our website content but we are definitely dedicated in finishing our task. And always free to all. At this time we would like to express our desire for more County Coordinator support. Our website is for all Virginian researchers. Free records, free access. So far we have 22 counties represented (3 more new ones coming very soon) but very few USGenWeb counties have us linked in their webpages. How can researchers find info if there is no link to available resources? This is a pet peeve of ours for at least a year. We would like everyone to know about our records. New ancestors found are new branches to established trees. And this would be new knowledge to everyone. As Paul stated earlier "MOST proud of our ancestry there" we totally agree. Our BINNS line goes back to New Kent in early 1700. My line moved away in 1848, to Ohio then Michigan. But we were still Virginians. Colonial Virginians. And very PROUD of it !! 2. Yvonne and Steve
    3. Hi Paul, Forgive us for copying your personal email to us to these 2 email lists but your message contains some very important information that we think needs to be expanded on. The subject for this expansion is those "Loose Papers" of Surry..... Last June, 2000, we were at the Surry Courthouse with our brand new digital camera. We wanted to experiment taking pictures of the court books. The year before we were told that no photocopies were allowed so this year we wanted to 'copy' these books with photos. We bought a Casio QV3000 capable of 2048 x 1536 pixels with an IBM Microdrive that can store 245 hi-res pictures. This trip was to validate the capabilities of this camera by photographing court book pages. The experiment was a tremendous success. We took hundreds of photos. As we were packing to leave I noticed some big flat boxes stacked high on the east side of the vault room. They were labeled with dates like 1790, 1800, 1810, etc. I was intrigued. We hadn't seen these boxes in past trips. There was no tag that said "Keep Out" but these boxes were definitely not within normal reach. There was no courthouse personnel around so I pulled down the 1790 box and opened it up. We were amased at the contents! These papers were all original papers, pertaining to court cases. Thousands of them. In perfect condition! We looked through them with shaking hands. We knew that we shouldn't be doing this. I wanted so badly to take photos of every single one of these papres. I put the cover back on and put the box back on the shelf. As we left I asked the staff about those boxes. I was told that they were off limits because these contents were newly discovered loose court case papers and they were going to be microfilmed and categorized by the Library of Virginia. For more information I was to talk to the Surry County Historical Society which was "right around the corner". I immediately went there. I talked with a person named Dennis. Later I found out it was Dennis Hudgins, editor of the later 'Pioneers and Caviliers' fame. We talked for almost an hour. A very knowledgeable individual. These new loose papers, according to Dennis, were to be catergorized and microfilmed by the Library of Virginia, with assistance from a lady from North Carolina who had done sigificant Surry County research. We would have to wait for more information. We left. How I wanted to be accidently locked up in that courthouse overnight! To be able to take pictures of new documents would be a dream come true. But that was only a dream. We have no idea what has transpired since then about all those loose court papers. We saw them, we held them in our hands........ If anyone knows of the outcome of this subject we would surely like to know. And so would these lists. 1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] ?
    2. Paul Drake
    3. I have been asked: "Paul, what, please, are "O.S.," "N.S," and "Old Calendar" all about. Thanks. Gloria." Simply stated, there is little reason for a genealogist to memorize the facts having to do with this matter, however the whole topic may be significant if you have birth, death, etc. dates for ancestors before 1752 here or in Britain. Our year is NOT 365 days long, nor is it 365 and 6 hoursbecause of Leap Years. It is, instead, 365 days, 5 hours, 48 min., and 46 sec. - 11 min and 14 sec, give or take a second or two, shorter than 366 days. Despite that little error, the Julian Calendar (after Julius Caeser) served us for 700m years+-, however by 732, during the times and thought of "The Venerable Bede," it became apparent that the calendar was off by several days, and the equinoxes - first day of spring and first of fall - were not on very near March 21 and Sept 21, as they should have been, as revealed by the position of the sun. So, in 732 the calendar was adjusted and all went well to all of us who had no clocks and gave not a hoot anyhow, and to the astrologers who could simply mutter incantations and tell the parish priest what day and time it "really" was. All that said, by the mid-17th century that little 11 minutes and 48 seconds per year had added up to many days, Easter was off, the longest day of the year was in early June, and the sun was not where it should have been on the first day of the year - March 25 - nor on XMAS. So, we fixed it with the "new" or "Gregorian Calendar" after Pope Gregory), and here and in Britain, when you went to bed on the evening of Sept. 2, 1752, you awakened to the morning of Sept. 14, 1752, 12 days having been removed in order that we be back in time with the sun (and who didn't want to do that, for goodness sake!). So what? No one was born here or in Britain from midnight of Sept. 2, 1752 till a moment after midnight of Sept. 13 - those days simply did not exist. Too bad for the little kids who missed a birthday that year :) More importantly to genealogists, from then on we celebrated January as the 1st month of the year and January 1 as New Years Day. So, while we celebrate Washington's birthday as Feb. 22, 1732, his Mother would have insisted - and correctly so - that he was, instead, born on Feb. 22, 1731. The two days were identical, of course, however if we give "Feb. 22, 1731" as the birth, as his mother would have, we would write "Feb. 22, 1731 O.S." (for "old style") and if we wrote "Feb. 22, 1732" as that birthday we would write "Feb. 22, 1732 N.S." (for "new style"). AND, it is not quite this simple, but who cares, or as old Bill said, "hhmmmmmmmmm; Much ado about nothing" huh? Paul :)

    1. [VA-SOUTHSIDE-L] Nansemond Co.
    2. Nansemond Co records are located in Suffolk which is what Nansemond County became. Also in the Va. Library in Richmond. It is true that the records burned 3 times (but, interestingly enough, never by the Yankees.) However there are many records to be found. Don't listen when you are told, even at the library, that there are none. Very old records are a problem but see good old "Cavaliers----", " Va. Colonial Records","The Vestry Book of the Upper Parish, Namsemond County, 1743-1793, see "Suffolk in Va." by Fillmore Norfleet pub 1974. Will books are in Suffolk (Municipal Bldg.) Deed books are a gold mine. Just think. When you buy property, the deed is recorded and you take a copy home. The records burn. so what. When you dispose of the property, you bring the deed in and that transaction is recorded. Maybe there are only snippits of history but that's the fun of the game. Search Cedar Hill Cemetary. My GGgrandparents tombstones name their parents and parents' home county. Look around. I looked for my ggrandmother's death certificate in Isle of Wight because she moved there as a widow. Haven't found her's or her grave but found my Ggrandfather's (and I thought he had died in Suffolk) and her Mother's which named her parents and gave me another generation! (This after the staff in Isle of Wight said they didn't have any old death records----"Well, just a few." They could be your few. The Yankees did mess up record keeping--that part of Va was occupied very early in the War---all those hams and bacon, so many records during the War years were never kept. And, of course, don't forget the LDS library. Hope this helps.

    3. GOOD, GOOD advice, Billee, and it applies to all counties which are said to have NO records. Remember All, just as you would do today, during the first few days after a fire that the county offices were reopened, EVERYONE who was able and yet had those, took their deed from home to the new facility for recording; land was precious, and they were very careful to let the World know anew that THEY owned this or that tract. Then too, the taxing authorities AT ONCE reopened/rewrote the tax books and knew who owned virtually every tract. Those with "burned courthouses" in their lines should proceed as though it did not happen and not give up, exactly as Billee did.
